What If Cancer Cells Could Be Destroyed by Their Mutations?

Second Order Conversations, Episode 01: Jeff Liu, CEO & Co-founder of FinalDose A tumor analysis can list the mutations a cancer carries. FinalDose is asking whether a mutation can do more than describe the disease. The company wants to use it as an address: a DNA sequence that a therapy reads, finds, and acts on. FinalDose was founded in 2025 by Jeff Liu, Ph.D. (CEO & Co-founder), Li-Yao Huang, Ph.D. (Chief Scientific Officer), Steven Lin, Ph.D. (Chief Technology Officer). All three are based in London. All three hold Oxford doctorates, in oncology, biochemistry, and computational biology, respectively. That mix of disciplines matters for what follows, because what they are building moves between molecular biology, computation, and the practical work of building a company. They are developing a CRISPR-based approach to identifying cancer cells by their genetic mutations and selectively destroying them. What Jeff believes is possible (I join him in his optimism)! In the heat of summer, I met with Jeff Liu, also known as “the dude @ FinalDose”. We had a chat and covered: * Why FinalDose is exploring genetic mutations rather than relying solely on protein targets in cancerous cells * The “search and destroy” concept: re-engineering CRISPR-Cas to identify a cancer-associated mutation and eliminate the cell carrying it * How programmable guide RNA could potentially enable different genetic targets * The delivery challenge: reaching the right cells and organs, and the risk of off-target effects and unwanted immune responses * How AI is used to narrow possibilities and accelerate lab work, which Jeff says has sped it up by roughly 90% * Building a biotech between London and the U.S. * Does China have the cure for cancer? * A few moments of laughs in between This is the first episode of Second Order Conversations, an interview series featuring biotech and life sciences founders, scientists, and thinkers discussing the challenges they face, the decisions they make, and the second-order effect of turning breakthrough technology into reality. We ask not just what it does, but also what changes when it meets the real world and where uncertainty remains. Watch the full conversation with Jeff Liu on YouTube. Ph.D. in Oncology from Oxford. His previous startup, Vivid Dx, solved a multi-decade bottleneck in sepsis diagnostics by overcoming the challenge of low biomass isolation. Overcoming this hurdle enabled us to build the world’s fastest diagnostic system, slashing wait times from five days to just 30 minutes. He has a proven track record of closing institutional rounds, having secured $5m in seed funding and $10m in pre-series A funding. Li-Yao Huang – CSO: Oxford PhD in Biochemistry. He developed a comprehensive discovery-to-validation framework utilising Cas9 and its derivatives to identify and verify novel therapeutic targets from high-throughput genetic and genetic-drug interaction data. Scientific lead in molecular biology, cellular assays and construct engineering. Steven Lin – CTO. PhD in Computational Biology from Oxford. Previously Data Lead at Gutsee Biotech. He developed a novel machine learning method that uses coevolutionary biology to identify genetic targets that confer drug resistance in viruses. During the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, he led the UK Biobank’s analysis of human genetic susceptibility to infection. FinalDose This is a public episode. Second Order Episode #4 - Oculomics: What If Your Retina Could Tell You How Fast You're Aging and See Disease Before It Arrives?

Your next eye exam might tell you more than whether you need new glasses. AI-powered retinal imaging is turning routine eye scans into predictive health dashboards, detecting heart disease, tracking biological aging, and spotting neurodegeneration years before symptoms appear. But can we trust invisible patterns that even doctors can’t verify? And does better detection actually change outcomes when the real barriers are access, cost, and behavior? This episode explores oculomics: the five-year-old field coined “Oculomics” using your retina as a crystal ball for systemic health, and asks whether we’re ready for what it might tell us. We explore the science, the promise, the pitfalls, and the uncomfortable questions about what happens when prevention becomes prediction. Listen on: Apple Podcasts | Spotify | Web This episode draws on peer-reviewed research including: * https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7343674/ (Wagner et al., 2020 - original oculomics paper) * RETFound foundation model (Nature, 2023) * A Comprehensive review “Retinal Imaging-Based Oculomics: Artificial Intelligence as a Tool in the Diagnosis of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Diseases” (Ghenciu et al., 2024) * "The Eye as a Window to Systemic Health: A Survey of Retinal Imaging from Classical Techniques to Oculomics (Inamullah et al. survey, 2025) * UK Biobank retinal age gap studies * Google Health’s EyeAge research * Clinical deployment data from Optain Health/EyePACS. * The Global RETFound Initiative involves Moorfields, UCL, National University of Singapore, and Chinese University of Hong Kong, targeting 100 million images from 65 countries. Second Order Episode #2: How AI is Revolutionizing the Fight Against Microbial Contamination in Everyday Products

For decades, microbiological testing relied on culture-based methods. Samples had to be incubated and grown, then manually analyzed. This process usually took an average of 5–20 days before a contamination signal could be confirmed and acted upon. This timeline is no longer acceptable for industries where contamination can cost lives, destroy brands, and trigger costly recalls. Today, a new generation of AI-enabled microbiology tools is transforming the way we detect and prevent microbial contamination in water, food, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and cell and gene therapies. Spore.Bio is an example of this, as they have developed a solution that eliminates this constraint thanks to patented technology which uses light to instantly detect the bacterial load of the products being tested. This is second-order technology, often quiet until it matters, subtle until it saves, and precise when decisions must be made. The data for Europe as of 2025 Foodborne Outbreaks (Confirmed & Provisional) EU/EEA (ECDC & EFSA) Most recent consolidated EU outbreak data (published Dec 2025, covering 2024, used as baseline for 2025 trend) EFSA/ECDC One Health Zoonoses Report (released Dec 2025): >6,558 foodborne outbreaks >62,481 confirmed illnesses >3,336 hospitalizations >53 deaths Pathogens: - Salmonella: 1,238 outbreaks (largest cause) - Norovirus: 631 outbreaks - Listeria monocytogenes: 38 outbreaks, 17 deaths This is the latest fully validated EU dataset and is what regulators use for current (2025) risk assessments. Major Confirmed Cross-Border Outbreak Continuing Into 2025 Salmonella Strathcona in Tomatoes (EU + UK + US) ECDC outbreak investigation update (2025): > Ongoing outbreak linked to tomatoes > 289 confirmed cases (Jan 2023 – Aug 2025) >2025 confirmed cases: at least 29 >Countries affected in 2025: Italy (11) Germany (6) Austria (5) Ireland (2) France (1) Denmark (1) Netherlands (1) Norway (1) Czechia (1) Whole genome sequencing confirms single strain.
