Ep. 28 From Epilepsy to 4% Survival: Will Pearce’s Journey | Attento Board 9-24-26

What happens when life keeps throwing obstacles your way—and you decide to turn those challenges into something that can help others? In Episode 28 of the Assistive Tech Today Podcast, I sit down with Will Pearce, founder of Attento Board, to hear the incredible and unexpected journey that led him to assistive technology. Will's story begins with epilepsy and seizures that ultimately forced him to give up his career in real estate. Then, in 2017, while running the Cooper River Bridge Run, Will collapsed from cardiac arrest and went into a coma for three and a half days. Doctors gave him just a 4% chance of survival. Will made a remarkable recovery—and what followed was a completely unexpected path toward helping people with disabilities and others who need greater independence. What started during COVID as an idea for making cutting boards eventually became the Attento Board, a lightweight and versatile adaptive tool that is now being used in creative ways by individuals, therapists, schools, and organizations. In this conversation, Will shares his story of resilience, how the Attento Board came to life, the incredible ways people have adapted it for their own needs, and why he believes in turning negatives into positives. This is a powerful conversation about survival, purpose, independence, creativity, and using your own experiences to make a difference in the lives of others. Ep. 26 From “I Want” to Real Conversation: How AI Is Changing AAC | Shay Cohen 9-10-26

In Episode 26 of the Assistive Tech Today Podcast, I sit down with Shay Cohen, co-founder of Verbaly, to talk about an innovative approach to AAC that puts conversation—not just sentence building—at the center of communication.Shay’s journey into assistive technology is deeply personal. His son is an AAC user, and after years of experiencing the challenges of existing AAC technology firsthand, Shay saw an opportunity to build something different. With a background in electrical engineering, product management, and technology, he combined his professional experience with his perspective as a father to create a more dynamic approach to AAC.One of the biggest challenges we discuss is how traditional AAC can sometimes become what Shay calls an “I want machine.” While requesting items and expressing basic needs is incredibly important, real communication goes far beyond that. Conversations change direction, questions come up, topics shift, and what someone needs to say depends on what is happening around them. That becomes especially important in the classroom. How can an AAC user answer a question about something that wasn't pre-programmed? How can they ask their own questions? And how can they demonstrate what they actually know?Shay explains how Verbaly uses AI and contextual information to help provide relevant vocabulary for the conversation happening in that moment—while keeping the AAC user in control. The AI isn't there to speak for the person. Instead, Shay describes it as a silent participant, helping highlight relevant communication paths while the AAC user remains the driver. This conversation is really about a bigger question:What happens when we stop designing AAC around what someone needs to request—and start designing it around what they want to say? Shay's story is a great example of how lived experience, technology, and product development can come together to create new possibilities in assistive technology.👍 Like💬 Comment with your thoughts🔔 Subscribe for more conversations about innovative assistive technologyLearn More about todays guest:Email: shay@verbali.ioLinkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/shaycohWebsite and Demo:Website: https://www.verbali.ioSchedule a demo: https://verbali.io/ScheduleVerbaliDemoDemo video 1 - How MaTalk AI is used for homework:https://www.youtube.com/shorts/5CiArYESZwkDemo video 2 - How MaTalk AI is used for a daily conversation:https://www.youtube.com/shorts/bllvNiqq3qwiOS app:MaTalk AI Forever (license app): https://apps.apple.com/il/app/matalk-ai-forever/id6756188044MaTalk AI (subscription app): https://apps.apple.com/us/app/matalk-ai/id6747360381Android app: MaTalk AI Forever (license app): https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.verbali.matalkaiforeverMaTalk AI (subscription app): https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.verbali.matalkai&hl=en_USCONNECT WITH US:• Subscribe to Assistive Tech Today: [https://www.youtube.com/@AssistiveTechTodayPodcast]• Follow Vinny Livoti on LinkedIn: [https://www.linkedin.com/in/vincent-livoti-46912767]"Please note: Many people in the neurodiverse community prefer identity‑first language and describe themselves as “Autistic,” which is also the language our guest typically uses. Ep. 25 Human First AI: Why AI Should Think With Us, Not For Us | Derek Crager 9-3-26

AI is changing the way we work, learn, communicate, and solve problems—but what happens when we put people first? In Episode 25 of the Assistive Tech Today Podcast, Vinny sits down with Derek Crager, founder of Practical AI, for a fascinating conversation about making AI practical, human-centered, and accessible. Derek shares the story behind his Human First AI philosophy and explains why he believes AI should think with the human, not for the human. We talk about how AI can amplify what people already do well rather than simply replace them, and why education and understanding are so important as this technology continues to evolve. Derek also introduces Pocket Mentor, a voice-based AI designed to give people access to knowledge, training, and troubleshooting help when they need it—without requiring an app or complicated technology. And this conversation gets especially interesting when we connect AI to assistive technology, education, therapists, neurodiversity, and personalized learning. Could AI help students learn in a way that works for them?Could it give therapists more time to focus on the people they serve? Could it help preserve decades of knowledge when an experienced worker retires? And could AI become another tool for helping people become more independent? These are just some of the questions Vinny and Derek explore in this episode. This isn't a conversation about AI replacing humanity. It's about asking a different question:What if AI could help us become more capable while keeping humans in control? 🎙️ Guest: Derek Crager : 💡 Founder: Practical AI : 🤖 Creator: Pocket Mentor : 📚 Author: Human First AI: If you enjoy conversations about assistive technology, AI, accessibility, innovation, education, and the future of technology, make sure to subscribe to the Assistive Tech Today Podcast.👍 Like the video💬 Share your thoughts in the comments🔔 Subscribe for more conversations with innovators and people changing the way we think about technology. Ep. 23 The Invention Helping People Create Again 8-13-26

What happens when innovation starts with a simple question: How can I help someone do something they love again? In Episode 23 of Assistive Tech Today, Vinny sits down with Lianna Genovese, founder and CEO of ImaginAble Solutions and inventor of Guided Hands®, along with assistive technology specialist and educator Laura Cantagallo.Lianna shares the remarkable story behind Guided Hands—a device that began as a school project designed to help a friend with cerebral palsy paint again. What started with prototypes built on a basement ping-pong table has grown into an internationally recognized assistive technology solution used by children and adults around the world. But this conversation is about much more than one device.Vinny, Lianna, and Laura explore the importance of including people with disabilities in the design process, listening to caregivers and clinicians, and recognizing that no two individuals have the same needs. They discuss how assistive technology can support communication, creativity, education, therapy, independence, and participation. The conversation also highlights the power of therapy through play and how the right technology can help remove barriers in the classroom. From painting and writing to using an iPad, crossing the midline, playing games, and participating alongside peers, Guided Hands is helping people use the movement they have to engage more fully with the world around them.Lianna and Laura also discuss accessibility within Apple technology, the importance of low-tech solutions alongside high-tech innovations, assistive technology conferences, and the role teachers, therapists, caregivers, and families play in discovering new possibilities.Perhaps most importantly, this episode is a reminder that the best assistive technology isn't just about the product—it is about the person using it.It's about dignity. It's about inclusion. It's about self-expression.And as Lianna says, self-expression is a human right.Join us for an inspiring conversation about innovation, unexpected career paths, disability inclusion, and how one idea can grow into something that changes lives around the world.Links to share:https://www.imaginablesolutions.com https://www.imaginablesolutions.com/pages/ot-guidehttps://www.imaginablesolutions.com/blogs/guided-hands https://www.linkedin.com/in/lianna-genovese Laura Cantagallo: My company website: I provide assistance with accessibility work and auditing websites for accessibility as well as professional development. https://lceducationconsulting.comhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/laura-cantagallo • Follow Vinny Livoti on LinkedIn: [https://www.linkedin.com/in/vincent-livoti-46912767]“Welcome to Assistive Tech Today Podcast — where innovation meets inclusion.I’m Vinny Livoti, an assistive technology specialist with over twenty-four years of experience supporting children, teens, and adults with special needs through technology. From product design and development to education, consulting, and hands-on demonstrations, this podcast is dedicated to exploring today’s cutting-edge assistive and adaptive technologies. This is Assistive Tech Today Podcast — empowering lives through technology.”"Please note: Many people in the neurodiverse community prefer identity‑first language and describe themselves as “Autistic,” which is also the language our guest typically uses.
