    S2 Episode 7 — Inside the Portfolio

There are two ways to get the medium pot wrong, and both of them are expensive. Leave it in a savings account for seven years because that feels responsible, and at 2.5% inflation thirty thousand becomes about twenty-five thousand two hundred in today’s money. The number in your account never went down. You just have 16% less than you started with, and nothing ever told you. Or put it in the same global equity fund as your long money, because that’s where the returns are — and then the market falls 30% two years before you buy. That isn’t a paper loss you calmly wait out. That’s a deposit that no longer exists. Last episode I sorted your money into three pots and left a question hanging: where do the lines between them actually sit? Today I answer it. And along the way I take apart one of the most repeated numbers in investing. In this episode I cover: • Why “10 years” is a convention rather than a finding — and what a century of bear markets actually shows• The two opposite ways people wreck the medium pot, and why the cautious one hides in plain sight• The difference between a bond and a bond fund — and why 2022 punished people who confused them• How to match an instrument to a date instead of guessing at your risk tolerance• The one question that decides your risk capacity, and it isn’t your age Three and ten are useful shorthands. Five and twenty are what the record actually says. Now you know both. S2 Episode 5 — Good Debt, Bad Debt

Last episode I called credit cards, instalment plans and personal loans the enemy in your wallet. This episode I need to correct something — debt itself is not the enemy. Some debt, used correctly, at the right time, for the right thing, is one of the most powerful financial tools available to you. The problem is that the line between the two is not obvious. And most people are asking the wrong question entirely. "Can I afford the monthly payment?" is the wrong question. There is a better one, borrowed from one of the most successful investors alive, and once you have it every debt decision you ever make becomes clearer. In this episode I cover: • The single question that separates productive debt from unproductive debt• Why a mortgage does something rent never does — and why that principle can still fail in practice• Student loans, and why "education is an investment" is too simple. The three things that have to line up before that debt makes sense• The grey zone — cars, laptops, tools of a trade. When borrowing passes the test, and when you are just very good at convincing yourself it does• The order that actually matters: what to clear first, what to build next, and when good debt earns its place• What to do if you are already out of sequence, because most people are Debt is a tool. What matters is whether you are using it, or it is using you. S2 Episode 5 — Good Debt, Bad Debt Show notes and full episode summary: https://www.beyondpiggybanks.com/episodes/episode-s0205.html
