Retrained at 41: How Kate ReAuthored Her Career

In this episode, I sat down with trichologist Kate to talk about career reinvention, hair health, and the things nobody tells you about menopause, medication, and stress. Kate shared her own winding path with me — leaving her A-levels early to support herself, training as a hairdresser at 17, spending two decades in hairdressing education, and eventually discovering trichology almost by accident at a hair health evening. She retrained at 41, and hasn’t looked back since. We got into the practical side of her work as a trichologist too. She broke down what’s really behind hair loss and shedding — including: The GLP-1 connection — why rapid weight loss from medications like Ozempic and Mounjaro can trigger hair shedding, and why it’s about nutrition and the body’s stress response, not the drug itselfMenopause and hair thinning — how dropping estrogen levels can leave testosterone “freer to run rampant” on hair follicles, and why HRT sometimes (not always) helpsThe “normal” bloods problem — a real patient story about iron levels sitting at 29 for 15 years, dismissed by doctors as fine, despite exhaustion and breaking hairNutrition myths — why biotin and collagen get all the marketing hype, when zinc, B12, vitamin D, and iron matter far moreHair as an early warning system — why changes in texture, thickness, or shedding are often the body’s first visible signal that something else needs attentionI loved hearing about Kate’s own reinvention too — retraining without finishing her A-levels, building a thriving clinic, speaking at conferences across Europe, and now mentoring the next generation of hairdressers and trichologists. If there’s one thing I want you to take from this episode, it’s that it’s never too late to change direction — there’s more than one way to get where you want to be.
