Supporting Dignity and Purpose Through Care: A Perspective from Daniel Pickus: Episode 15

Aging Well: Discovering Purpose and Connection in Later LifeEmotional well-being is just as important as physical health as we age. Having a sense of purpose, maintaining meaningful relationships, and feeling valued can make a significant difference in quality of life. These needs remain important whether an older adult is enjoying an active retirement, aging in place, or beginning to need additional support. Daniel Pickus, owner of Senior Helpers, works with seniors and their families and has seen firsthand how purpose, connection, acceptance, and kindness can support aging well. His insights can help families throughout Asheville, Hendersonville, and Western North Carolina think differently about what makes later life meaningful. Finding Purpose as We AgePurpose matters at every stage of life, but what gives us purpose often changes as we grow older. Retirement, health changes, the loss of a spouse, or reduced mobility can affect activities and responsibilities that were once an important part of a person's identity. Finding purpose starts with accepting where we are today. Acceptance does not mean giving up. It means recognizing current abilities, relationships, and circumstances and finding meaningful ways to move forward. Purpose does not have to come from a major accomplishment. Caring for a pet, mentoring a grandchild, organizing family photographs, tending a garden, helping a neighbor, or participating in a community organization can provide meaning and a sense of accomplishment. Acceptance Is Not Giving UpOne of Daniel's important observations is that acceptance plays a valuable role in aging well. Changes in independence can be frustrating, especially when someone can no longer drive, manage every household responsibility, or participate in activities the way they once did. Supporting Independence With Kindness and GraceConversations about caregiving, home safety, transportation, or additional assistance can be difficult. Adult children may see a need for change before their parents are ready to accept it. Approaching these conversations with kindness and respect can make a meaningful difference. Whenever possible, older adults should remain involved in decisions affecting their lives. Finding Joy in Everyday LifeAging well does not mean every day will be easy. It does mean creating opportunities for enjoyment and connection, even as circumstances change. Gardening, reading, listening to music, spending time outdoors, sharing a meal, visiting with friends, or attending community events can all contribute to emotional well-being. What matters most is finding activities that are meaningful to the individual. Planning for a Meaningful Later LifeWhether the plan includes aging in place, independent living, in-home caregiving, or another senior living option, it helps to begin with a simple question: What is most important to this person now? By listening carefully, respecting changing abilities, maintaining meaningful connections, and creating opportunities for purpose and joy, families can help their loved ones approach later life with greater confidence, dignity, and fulfillment.
