They Are Not the Co-Author of Your Story | PERMISSION with Ally Berthiaume

The moment you tell the truth about your own life, somebody else may insist that you got it wrong. They remember it differently. They had their reasons. They would prefer you leave that part out. And suddenly, the person who hurt you is standing over your shoulder with a red pen, making editorial notes in the margins of your memory. But they weren’t in your body. They didn’t carry what happened home. Their discomfort does not outrank your experience. Memoir coach Ally Berthiaume joins Kirsten for a feral, funny, unexpectedly tender conversation about writing from the wound, revising from the scar, and letting other people keep their version without surrendering yours. Because permission isn’t only about writing a book. Sometimes it’s permission to want more, end something that is still 80% good, or stop waiting for someone else to say go. FERAL SNACKS “Draft from the wound and revise from the scar.” “If we sat around waiting for somebody else to say go, we probably would never go anywhere.” “I was in the fucking room. I know what happened.” “What am I doing sitting around here trying to get your perception to match my truth?” “You don’t have to start with everything. Pick one thing.” IN THIS EPISODE Why another person’s conflicting memory does not erase your own The quiet damage of waiting for someone else to validate what happened to you What belongs in the messy first draft—and what may not belong in the finished book The difference between protecting someone’s privacy and protecting them from accountability Why memoir must eventually move beyond journal entries and make meaning for the reader Granting yourself permission before the supportive co-conspirator arrives Leaving something that is mostly good because the part that isn’t still matters How one small permission can make the next one easier to claim ABOUT ALLY BERTHIAUME Ally Berthiaume is The Memoir Coach. She helps courageous women write the memoir they wish they had when they were going through the hardest chapter of their lives. How to Be an Imperfect Parent | FAMILY with Dr. Wendy

Parenthood has a sneaky way of turning children into walking report cards. If they hit the expected milestones, make choices other adults approve of, and appear sufficiently well-adjusted in public, maybe we passed. If they struggle—or simply become somebody we didn’t predict—we start digging through every parenting decision we ever made like we’re building a case against ourselves. Perfection can look like patience and poise at work, followed by an empty tank and a short fuse at home. It can sound like “this is the way” while everybody aboard the This Is the Way Express is quietly miserable. It can even look like doing everything the experts recommended—and then finding candy wrappers under the bed because all that good parenting has started to feel a whole lot like control. Dr. Wendy Schofer knows this from both sides of the exam table. The pediatrician who thought she had textbook answers eventually realized her family didn’t need more effort from her. They needed experimentation, repair, honesty, and room to be gloriously human. Because our children don’t need us to perform perfection. They need a relationship sturdy enough to hold what happens after we screw up. FERAL SNACKS “I’m the best parent you’re gonna have. I’m also, thankfully, the worst that you’re gonna have.” “I thought I had a role to play, and I couldn’t let anybody see the cracks.” “I had zero left over in the tank for my own family.” “What if you just play with it? Just do it dirty.” “Our kids are doing the best that they can where they are right now. And also, so are we as adults.” IN THIS EPISODE • The pediatrician who knew enough to get herself—and her family—into trouble • What candy wrappers under the bed revealed about control, restriction, and the wrong parenting plan • When public patience and poise leave absolutely nothing in the tank for the people at home • How the woulda-coulda-shoulda monster starts yanking pieces from your child’s Jenga tower • Loving the actual human in front of you—even when their life doesn’t match the approved timeline • Why parenting works better as an experiment than a predetermined express route • Pizza, Panera, bedhead, hoagie smells, and the surprisingly useful practice of lowering the daggum bar • What children learn when they watch us offer ourselves the same grace we want them to carry into the world ABOUT DR. WENDY SCHOFER Dr. Wendy Schofer is a study in contradictions. She is a dual-board-certified pediatrician and lifestyle physician, as well as a trauma-informed parenting coach specializing in eating disorder prevention for family members of all ages and sizes. As the founder of Family in Focus®, she is on a mission to help one million families build the social-emotional skills that strengthen their relationships with food, body, and especially each other. After screwing up and then healing her own family’s relationships with food and body, Dr. Wendy is living proof that families can change—and that nobody has to become a perfect parent first. What If Peace Requires Disappointing People? | PEACE with Heather Clark, MD

Some of us have spent years treating another person’s disappointment like a tiny household emergency. Scan the face. Read the room. Adjust accordingly. Become whatever version of yourself seems least likely to make anybody uncomfortable. Heather Clark, MD, knows that machinery from the inside. She describes people-pleasing as constantly trying to figure out who other people want you to be, then showing up as her. And eventually, that gets exhausting enough that even joy isn’t quite what you’re hungry for anymore. You want enough quiet inside your own head to actually be where your feet are. For Heather, PEACE is deeply connected to her Christian faith, but not to collecting more rules about how to do Christianity correctly. In fact, her first book is called I Don’t Need the Rules Anymore. Her new filter is considerably shorter: love God, love the humans, love herself. And sometimes that means going on the retreat three days before your oldest leaves for college, even while your brain produces a 12-part miniseries about what everyone might think about it. Nobody died. Her husband handled it. They didn’t even need a Target run. Maybe peace isn’t getting everyone around us to finally be okay. Maybe it’s discovering that they don’t have to be. FERAL SNACKS “What we really need is the ability to sit quietly without the to-do list screaming inside of our head.” “Belonging is when I get to be myself and I’m accepted. Fitting in is when I have to be like you to be accepted.” “I’m showing up as the person that I think you want me to be.” “My favorite question is: Whose voice is that?” “I don’t need you anymore, but I’m scared to let you go.” IN THIS EPISODE • Why Heather went looking for joy and discovered what she really needed was peace • The exhausting mental room-scanning happening underneath people-pleasing • What happened when Heather left for a retreat days before moving her oldest child into college • The spectacularly useful ER-physician measurement of success: nobody died • “Whose voice is that?” and what to do with all those shoulds rattling around in your head • The physical moment Heather realized she was ready to loosen her grip on the rules of her faith • How more than 2,000 religious rules became a three-part filter: love God, love the humans, love myself • Why loving your neighbor “as yourself” gets complicated when the way you treat yourself is full of criticism, shame, and impossible expectations ABOUT HEATHER CLARK, MD Heather Clark, MD, is a rural ER physician, mom, wife, medical missionary, friend, entrepreneur, and lifelong apprentice to Jesus. She is a love-inspired creator who helps Christian perfectionists and people-pleasers create lives of true joy and lasting peace. She is currently writing her first book, I Don’t Need the Rules Anymore. When she has free time, you’ll find her salsa dancing, reading a good romance novel, or traveling to explore wild places and the beauty of God’s creation. But her favorite place of all is at home on her back patio in small-town Indiana, watching herons fish in the pond. WELCOME HOME | RETURN with Maggie Smith

You can get surprisingly far away from yourself without ever technically falling apart. You still answer the emails. You still handle the emergency. You still make sure everybody else has what they need. You become so competent at carrying the whole damn operation that nobody notices you’re barreling into December on two wheels with an emotional Pig-Pen cloud trailing behind you. That was Maggie Smith. Twenty-plus years in executive HR, a career built around supporting other people, and a growing realization that somewhere along the yellow brick road she had misplaced some fairly important things: fun, creativity, rest, and herself. In this episode, Maggie talks about what happened when she stopped treating self-prioritization like a character flaw. She shares what it was like to go through Kirsten’s Neuro-Proof Narrative Quest from the client side, why capable women can be spectacular at offering other people exactly what they refuse to give themselves, and the tiny but enormous victory of taking an entire vacation without checking work email once. And because Maggie’s own work lives right next door to this conversation, RETURN gets practical. Breathwork. Nervous system regulation. Hypnosis without the chicken-clucking nonsense. Letting go of old stories. Learning to hold space without rescuing. Finding the people who help you hear yourself again. Maybe coming home isn’t about becoming somebody new. Maybe you’ve had the ruby slippers on the whole damn time. FERAL SNACKS “I think sometimes I forget that nice doesn’t mean setting myself on fire to keep other people warm.” “I was not having enough fun in my life.” “I needed Kirsten Bombdiggity in my life to reconnect with dopamine and fun.” IN THIS EPISODE How a perfectly capable woman ends up screeching into the holidays on two wheels The difference between being nice and lighting yourself on fire for everybody else Why giving yourself the care you freely hand to other people can feel weirdly difficult What happened when Maggie put her work email on actual vacation too The client-side experience of Kirsten’s Neuro-Proof Narrative Quest, including journals, weekly connection, dopamine, and surprise mail Why helping somebody doesn’t always mean handing them the answer Breathwork, hypnosis, and what happens when your brain has been running an operating system you no longer want The career crisis that briefly had Maggie considering a roadside jam stand despite one fairly significant obstacle: she does not know how to make jam Why the right support can change with the season you’re in Coming home to yourself without turning yourself into another improvement project ABOUT MAGGIE SMITH Maggie Smith is the Founder and Guide of Ursa Major Wellbeing, where she helps people reconnect with themselves through evidence-informed practices that support nervous system regulation, resilience, and personal growth. After more than 20 years as an executive human resources leader, she combined her passion for leadership, psychology, and wellbeing to create a space where people can slow down, regulate, and reconnect with who they truly are. Maggie is trained in trauma-informed breathwork, meditation and mindfulness, restorative practices, Reiki, and clinical hypnosis. Midlife Is Not the Cooldown | EMPOWERED with Dr. Carol Wilder

At some point, “I guess I’m just getting older” starts sneaking into the explanation for everything. The exhaustion. The soreness. The changing body. The thing you used to be able to lift without thinking twice. And sometimes, without realizing it, respecting the fact that our bodies are changing turns into quietly lowering our expectations for what they can still do. Dr. Carol Wilder knows that story from both sides of the exam table. She spent decades as a Sports Medicine physician and former Division I athlete, bike commuting two hours a day and assuming that when she felt worse, the answer was to exercise more. Then perimenopause arrived and even the doctor found herself wondering, “What the F is going on?” What happened next changed not only how Carol cared for her own body, but how she thinks about aging, strength, muscle, and agency. This isn’t about dragging our 25-year-old bodies out of storage. It’s about deciding what we want our bodies to help us DO with the decades still ahead of us. Because aging is inevitable. Frailty isn’t. FERAL SNACKS “When you get your energy back, you get your agency back." “Aging is inevitable, right? But aging with frailty is not inevitable.” IN THIS EPISODE What happened when a Sports Medicine physician hit perimenopause and couldn’t exercise her way out of feeling like crap Why doing more and eating less can become exactly the wrong midlife equation The difference between accepting that your body is changing and quietly deciding it can’t do hard things anymore Why Carol wants women thinking about muscle, protein, strength, bones, and metabolic health before frailty enters the chat What changes when exercise stops being a project to make your body smaller The suitcase-over-your-head test: training for the ordinary physical freedoms we don’t want to lose Why understanding what’s happening inside your body can return some of the agency that midlife stole What an 84-year-old Jane Fonda reminded Carol about longevity that has nothing to do with protein or lifting weights ABOUT DR. CAROL WILDER Dr. Carol Wilder is a board-certified Sports Medicine physician, health coach, former NCAA Division I swimmer, and lifelong outdoor adventurer who is on a mission to prove that women don't have to accept getting weaker, slower, or softer after 40. With more than 30 years of experience in sports medicine and her own firsthand journey through the upheavals of perimenopause, Dr. Carol helps active women ditch the “it’s just aging” mindset. Using evidence-based strategies for strength training, nutrition, recovery, and mindset, she empowers women to build muscle, lose body fat, boost energy, and embrace midlife with strength, confidence, and purpose. When she’s not caring for patients or coaching clients, you’ll probably find her mountain biking a rocky trail, chasing fresh powder on her snowboard, or planning her next travel adventure from her home in beautiful Bend, Oregon. You're Going to Need All of You | UNAPOLOGETIC with Rebecca Pate

There comes a point where success starts asking a strange question. Not "Can you do the job?" "How much of yourself are you willing to leave outside the room to keep doing it?" For a lot of women, the answer has been: our opinions, our joy, our loud laugh, our creativity, our bodies, our ambition, our weirdness, our certainty, and eventually, our peace. We become incredibly skilled at editing ourselves until the edited version starts getting all the promotions while the real version wonders why she's so exhausted. This conversation isn't about becoming louder or more aggressive. It's about becoming less divided. Rebecca Pate spent years leading inside global organizations before realizing the biggest drain on ambitious women wasn't simply the workload. It was the constant effort of squeezing themselves into leadership that never actually fit. Together, she and Kirsten explore what happens when high performance stops competing with wellbeing, when apologizing stops being a personality trait, and when women finally decide they're going to need all of themselves. FERAL SNACKS "I actually don't think that's because of workload. I think it's because we're having to edit ourselves so much." "I don't want to apologize for anything about myself." "We're too sexy to be robots." "The parts of you that you've been hiding... are literally the parts you need to share with the world." "The more you show up as your authentic self, the more your tribe will follow you." IN THIS EPISODE • Why the edited version of you eventually becomes too expensive to maintain• The hidden energy drain of trying to be "professional enough"• What ambitious women keep leaving outside the conference room• Why burnout isn't always about workload• The difference between performing leadership and living it• How self-editing quietly steals creativity, courage, and capacity• Why putting people before profit doesn't mean sacrificing excellence• The surprising freedom that comes from realizing not everyone has to like you ABOUT REBECCA PATE Rebecca Pate is a Leadership Executive Coach who spent 18 years in Digital Product Leadership at some of the world's largest global retailers, defining international strategies and leading large teams to deliver real ROI. As a woman in tech, she built a network for women reaching more than 70,000 employees, hosted events for HRH The Duchess of Edinburgh, and advocated for thousands of women in the workplace. Today, Rebecca helps ambitious women remove the limiting beliefs keeping them stuck, develop a leadership identity that actually feels like theirs, and move forward with a clear plan rooted in compassion, action, and trust. Your Old Superpowers Might Be Expired. | GROWTH with Sarah Smith

Nothing stays the same forever. Not our bodies. Not our careers. Not our relationships. The strange part is that we often keep reaching for the same tools anyway, convinced that if we just try a little harder, organize a little better, or become a slightly more optimized version of ourselves, everything will click back into place. Sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes the very habits that made us successful become the habits that quietly start working against us. This week's conversation explores what happens when your internal operating system no longer matches the life you're trying to build. Sarah Smith, Chief Innovation Officer and founder of Iconoclast Innovations, shares why growth isn't just about learning something new. It's about recognizing when an old way of thinking, leading, or living has quietly expired. From motherhood and entrepreneurship to invisible labor, decision fatigue, and the myth of corporate safety, this conversation is full of reminders that growth often feels less like confidence... and more like scratching an itch you can't quite explain. FERAL SNACKS "Growth also comes with uncomfortableness in many forms." "Our brains don't want us to grow. They want us to be productive, predictable, and safe." "In engineering, we call that a smell. Something's not right." "I don't automate the thought away." "I would much rather have a real version of you than an automated one." IN THIS EPISODE • Why your biggest strengths can quietly become your biggest bottlenecks • The surprising "code smell" that tells you you've outgrown a season of your life • Why being everyone's solution person eventually becomes its own trap • The myth of corporate safety and what actually creates security • How good systems create more freedom instead of more rigidity • Why curiosity disappears when every ounce of energy goes toward simply keeping things together • The invisible labor women are still expected to carry and how to stop volunteering for it • Why AI should save your time... not replace your self-trust ABOUT SARAH SMITH Sarah Smith is Chief Innovation Officer and founder of Iconoclast Innovations. Living Life with 41 Mental Tabs Open | RESILIENCE with Diana Wei Fang

Some women are carrying so much in their heads that forgetting one thing feels like the beginning of a complete system failure. The permission slip. The grocery list. The birthday gift. The email you still haven't answered. Dinner. School pickup. The calendar invite. The doctor's appointment. The thing you're terrified you'll remember at 2:17 a.m. Eventually, it stops feeling like life and starts feeling like you're serving as the unpaid operating system for everyone around you. This week, the conversation takes a practical turn. Diana Wei Fang, founder of The Finer Points and a systems architect for purpose-driven entrepreneurs, shares simple, realistic ways to reclaim mental bandwidth without becoming a productivity robot. From finding hidden energy leaks to building support systems that actually fit real life, this episode is packed with ideas you can try today, whether you're running a business, raising a family, or simply trying to remember what day it is without checking your phone. Because resilience isn't about carrying more. Sometimes resilience looks like finally deciding you don't have to carry it all yourself. FERAL SNACKS "At some point some of it has to be put into motion so that it frees up your mental brain space." "What if we just invited and anticipated it and we worked with it instead of resisting it all the time?" "It was never meant for you to do it yourself. They always had help at home." "I do not think that money is the only currency." "I've chosen to build a life in which I can say yes to the things that are important to me." IN THIS EPISODE • How to spot the hidden energy leaks quietly draining your brain every day• Why your mental load grows faster in isolation than in community• The surprising first place Diana tells overwhelmed women to start• What tasks should almost never be done manually anymore• Creative ways to barter, share responsibilities, and reclaim your time• Why consistency creates freedom instead of stealing it• How systems give your brain permission to stop remembering everything• The difference between organizing your life and shrinking it ABOUT DIANA WEI FANG Diana Wei Fang is the founder of The Finer Points and a Systems Architect dedicated to helping purpose-driven entrepreneurs build businesses that last.
