The Digital Nomad Therapist Podcast: Your Guide to Building a Remote Private Practice

Dr. Annie | Therapist Business Mentor for Location-Independent Practices

Digital Nomad Therapist is the podcast for licensed therapists who want to build a location-independent private practice and leave therapist burnout behind.  You became a therapist for the freedom and meaning, and somewhere along the way it started to feel like a trap. I'm Dr. Annie Krajewski, a licensed psychologist and traveling therapist who has run my remote private practice from Morocco, Thailand, and Bali while continuing to see my U.S. clients through teletherapy. Every week, I break down what it takes to build a therapist business with true location independence: the licensing, the legal and HIPAA side, the marketing, the tech, and the mindset work nobody talks about. You'll hear my story, real stories from therapists who've made the digital nomad lifestyle work, and honest, practical guidance from someone who's actually living it. If you've been researching a remote private practice for months, or years, and still haven't made a move, this show is for you. Follow me on Instagram: @digitalnomadtherapist

How to Legally Practice Therapy Abroad: Malpractice Insurance, EHRs & Billing | ep 5

👀 Want to make sure you can legally take your therapy practice abroad?  👉 Download my FREE Legal Guide: The 4 Legal Questions Every Therapist Must Answer Before Moving Abroad  You have worked your a** off to get your therapy license—so obviously, you’re not about to risk it just because you want to live abroad. But your licensing board isn’t the ONLY thing you need to think about when becoming a digital nomad therapist. If you want to build a location-independent private practice and continue seeing your US clients while traveling or living abroad, there are a few other legal-ish things you need to have on your radar: your malpractice insurance, your EHR, and how you’re actually billing your clients. And thankfully? These things are probably a lot less complicated than you think. In this episode, I’m breaking down what therapists need to know about working abroad while maintaining a US-based private practice, including what to look for in your malpractice insurance policy, why your EHR’s terms of service matter, data privacy laws like GDPR, and why platforms like Alma, Headway, Grow, and Rula can make becoming a digital nomad therapist more complicated. I’m also sharing why I personally switched from SimplePractice and Sessions Health to Jane, what private pay therapists need to consider when working abroad, and why the legalities of becoming a digital nomad therapist might actually be the EASY part. Because the bigger challenge usually isn’t your license. It’s building a private practice that actually gives you the freedom to leave. And stay until the end because I’m giving you a very real update from Brazil... where our digital nomad trip has basically turned into a mold-infested nightmare. 🙃 👉 Book a demo with Jane First month free code: DIGITALNOMAD1MO In this episode, we talk about: Malpractice insurance for therapists working abroadWhat to ask your malpractice insurance provider before travelingChoosing an EHR for a location-independent private practiceSimplePractice vs. Sessions Health vs. Jane for digital nomad therapistsHIPAA, GDPR, and international data privacy considerationsBilling insurance while practicing therapy abroadAlma, Headway, Grow, and Rula location restrictionsPrivate pay therapy and building a location-independent practiceWhy marketing may be a bigger roadblock than the legalitiesMy very chaotic update from one month of digital nomad life in BrazilThis podcast is for educational purposes only and is not legal advice. Can Therapists See Clients Abroad? The Truth They Won’t Tell You | ep 4

👀 Have questions if this is the right move for you? DM the word GO ABROAD on Instagram! How the heck do you keep your license safe? Isn't seeing clients from abroad totally against the rules? I get this question in my DMs about once a week, so today we're settling it. 🌍 I'm Dr. Annie, a licensed psychologist and digital nomad therapist, and in this episode I'm busting the biggest myth in American therapy culture: that you can't see US clients while living outside the United States. Spoiler: in all the states I've researched, I have yet to find one that explicitly prohibits it. I'm also walking you through exactly how to check your own license, your state, and your licensure type, so you can stop worrying that the licensing board boogeyman is coming for you. If you're a therapist dreaming of a location-independent private practice, this one is for you. IN THIS EPISODE: - Why this myth is so common (hint: COVID confusion, insurance contracts, and PSYPACT rules all got blended together) - How grad school fear-mongering trained us to be terrified of losing our licenses - Why therapists crave certainty, and why that can keep you stuck - How going abroad is a big, scary decision, and how "my license won't allow it" can become the perfect excuse - My step-by-step process for checking your state's telehealth rules on provider location - Why you should never trust an AI summary of your licensing laws (go to the actual board website!) - The 5 things you'll most likely find when you look it up - What to do if it's still unclear: call your malpractice insurance consult line - Why losing your license over this is far less likely than grad school made you believe HOW TO CHECK YOUR LICENSE: 1. Google your license type + state + "telehealth rules and regulations for where the provider is located" 2. Click through to your actual state licensing board website 3. Look for what it says about the client's location vs. the provider's location 4. Still unsure? Call your malpractice insurance's free consult line and ask an attorney to help you interpret it Important: I'm not a lawyer, and this episode is not legal advice. Do your due diligence for your own situation. 👉 Book a demo with Jane First month free code: DIGITALNOMAD1MO WORK WITH ME: 💬 Ready to build a practice you can take anywhere? My Journey to Becoming a Digital Nomad Therapist | ep 1

🌎 Curious about taking your private practice abroad? DM the word GO ABROAD on Instagram to get started. A question I get all the time, like ALL the time, is: how did you actually become a digital nomad therapist? So for this first episode I'm telling you my story. I'm taking you back to before any of this felt possible. To the version of me sitting in windowless offices in DC, dreaming about my next trip and fully believing that being a therapist meant I had to choose between the career I loved and the life I wanted abroad. I'll tell you about the YouTube video that first put the words "digital nomad" in my head (and how fast I talked myself out of it). The breakup at 29 that cracked my whole life open. The three times I tried to tell my clients I was leaving and chickened out. And the wildly impulsive decision to just… stay in Morocco — where I met my husband two days in, kept seeing my US clients from a little apartment with borrowed wifi, and never really left. This is the story of betting on yourself before you have any proof it's going to work. If you've got that aching feeling that the life you're living isn't it, this one's for you. What I get into: Why I was SO sure being a therapist and living abroad couldn't go togetherThe breakup that turned my life upside down (and weirdly set me free)The list my mom made me write that changed everythingChickening out three times in a row trying to tell my clientsWhy I signed a two-year lease instead of running — and why that was the right callTelling my clients I was leaving, breaking my lease early, and driving across the country with my mom and two catsThe surf-and-yoga retreat in Tagazout and the moment I thought "why don't I just stay?"Seeing US clients for the first time from Morocco (5pm to 1am, didn't tell a soul)Matching with my now-husband on day twoThailand, Bali, giving birth to my daughter Zizi — all while running my practiceThe loneliness that led me to build Digital Nomad Therapist Links + what's next: 🎙️ Next week I'm sharing the BUSINESS side — how I actually built a practice that let me impulsively take off abroad in the first place. 📞 If you know you want this and trying to figure it out alone isn't working, book a call with me — let's talk about how I can support you.
