Breast Cancer Rehab: Restoring Mobility, Reducing Pain, and Rebuilding Strength After Surgery

This episode of Healing at Your Core explains common lingering problems after breast cancer treatment—shoulder and arm mobility limits, pain, chest wall tightness, scar restrictions and sensitivity, cording, lymphedema-related swelling, back tension, numbness, and menopausal or treatment-related stiffness (including frozen shoulder)—and how physical therapy can help through scar mobilization, graded strengthening, mobility work for the chest/ribs, and lymphedema education. It emphasizes that breast surgery can affect breathing mechanics, core and pelvic floor pressures, fatigue, deconditioning, and painful intercourse, especially with added radiation scarring or hormonal changes. Guidance includes resting about two weeks, then gradually resuming walking and gentle arm motion, progressing after six-week lifting clearance, and monitoring lymph response. The host highlights that early rehab helps most with range of motion, but it’s never too late to address strength, scars, and function. 00:00 Why Symptoms Persist 01:02 Surgery Effects Explained 02:43 Shoulder and Back Issues 04:24 Chest Tightness and Breathing 05:08 Scar and Nerve Sensitivity 06:42 Whole Body Rehab Approach 07:58 Safe Return to Movement 09:37 Lymphedema Caution Tips 10:57 Rehab Should Be Standard 12:13 Common Questions Answered 17:09 Never Too Late for Help Thank you for listening to Healing at Your Core. Areola Restoration with Calais Mumford

In this episode of Healing at Your Core, the host continues a breast cancer recovery series focusing on areola restoration after surgery, featuring tattoo artist Calais Mumford of Sleekline Beauty. Calais shares how she moved from microblading (starting in 2017) into medical areola tattooing after training courses and hands-on instruction in Texas, noting tattooing is not regulated in many states. They discuss the emotional impact of 3D areola tattooing on survivors’ confidence, body image, and intimate relationships, including the host’s experience as a breast cancer survivor. Calais explains consultation, timing (at least six months post-surgery with doctor approval), mapping, color selection, pain expectations and numbing, healing and aftercare, touch-ups (six-week perfecting and every 3–5 years), working over scars, nipple mound vs flat 3D techniques, and that insurance may reimburse costs. 00:00 Meet Kalei Mumford 04:07 Training and Credentials 08:54 Survivor Story 12:55 Partners in the Process 17:46 Designing Color and Shape 19:58 Pain and Numbing 22:13 Touch Ups and Longevity 23:52 3D Tattoo Basics 24:03 Nipple Mound Basics 26:55 Choosing Your Artist 27:59 Aftercare and Healing 30:16 Color Settling Touch Ups 31:48 Tattooing Over Scars 33:42 Client Mirror Moments 37:26 Insurance Coverage Explained 38:04 Wisdom for Survivors Thank you for listening to Healing at Your Core. Improved Wellness through Thermography with Shayla Shearer

Dr. Bree Allred interviews Shayla Shearer of Cache Valley Thermography about thermography and how it may complement medical screening. Shayla explains that thermography uses infrared imaging to create heat maps reflecting physiology such as blood flow, inflammation-related activity, metabolism, muscle activity, and nervous system patterns, with symmetry used as a key reference. It is not diagnostic or structural imaging and cannot identify specific conditions like cysts, but can flag abnormal or asymmetric patterns and suggest follow-up with appropriate clinicians and diagnostic tests. The episode covers benefits such as no radiation and use during pregnancy and breastfeeding, its usefulness for dense breast tissue, and common scan areas beyond breasts (thyroid, pelvis/torso). Shayla outlines appointment prep, acclimation and imaging steps, result timelines, typical rescan intervals, misconceptions, and where to find Cache Valley Thermography in North Logan, Utah. 00:00 Shayla’s Thermography Journey 01:33 Thermography Basics Explained 03:59 Screening vs Diagnosis 04:35 Readers vs Technicians 07:11 Breast Findings and Next Steps 09:52 Beyond Breasts Thyroid and Pelvis 10:30 Inflammation Injuries and Hormones 13:31 What to Expect at Your Appointment 16:31 Misconceptions Safety and Implants 17:13 Who Should Get Scanned and How Often 18:48 When to Skip and See a Doctor 19:31 Empowerment Preventive Mindset Thank you for listening to Healing at Your Core. My Breast Cancer Story

Dr. Bree Allred shares her personal breast cancer story to encourage listeners to trust their instincts and listen to their bodies. Diagnosed at 28 in December 2011 after noticing a persistent lump post-weaning from pumping for twins, she describes imaging, biopsy results showing high-grade ductal carcinoma, and subsequent planning with surgeons and the Huntsman Cancer Institute, including MRI and lymph node biopsy (negative). She chose a right unilateral mastectomy with tissue expander and later silicone implant reconstruction, declined IVF embryo preservation before chemotherapy, and underwent ACMT chemotherapy with significant side effects, hair loss, and community support. She discusses survivorship anxiety, later having two more children and breastfeeding, chemo-induced temporary menopause, and eventually a prophylactic mastectomy and symmetry surgery on the left side, which was cancer-free, introducing a Breast Cancer Awareness Month series on breast cancer experiences and rehab. 00:00 Why This Matters 01:41 Finding a Lump Postpartum 03:20 Ultrasound and Biopsy 05:56 Reading the Diagnosis 08:07 Treatment Planning and Timeline 11:20 MRI Results and Surgery Choice 13:35 Mastectomy Recovery and Reconstruction Options 16:05 Fertility Decisions and Starting Chemo 18:22 Chemo Reality and Hair Loss 23:28 Reconstruction and Life After Cancer 25:17 Prophylactic Surgery and Looking Ahead Thank you for listening to Healing at Your Core. Hormone Myths with Cassie Milligan

The episode continues the discussion between Dr Bree Allred speaking and Cassie Milligan, FNP on who may be a good candidate for hormone therapy, emphasizing individualized assessment beyond sex hormones and noting that many men and women—including some cancer survivors—may still be candidates with different approaches (e.g., estriol/bi-est, localized vaginal use). It reviews the Women’s Health Initiative, stating the black box warning stemmed from synthetic estrogen/progestin combinations and that later large-scale research and the FDA’s removal of the warning increased estrogen demand, contributing to patch shortages. The conversation compares delivery methods (patch, cream, pellet, troche, capsule, injections) and highlights why tablets are not preferred by the clinician. It covers when not to prescribe (e.g., high labs, recent cancer, estrogen blockers, prostate cancer) and stresses lab testing, conservative dosing, and monitoring. Hormone changes’ effects on vaginal dryness, atrophy, painful intercourse, GSM, UTIs/yeast infections, and pelvic floor issues are outlined, along with the role of probiotics and pelvic floor therapy. 00:00 Who Is a Candidate 01:58 Black Box Warning Explained 04:41 Estrogen Patch Shortage 10:44 Who Should Avoid HRT 15:17 Vaginal Health and Atrophy 16:55 Postpartum Pain and Pelvic Floor 19:55 Pelvic Pain and Prolapse 20:19 GSM and Bladder Symptoms 26:23 Rapid Fire Symptom Check 27:50 Perimenopause Myth Busting 28:57 Find the Right Practitioner 31:23 Whole Body Team Approach 33:35 Feeling Like Yourself Again Thank you for listening to Healing at Your Core. The episode features Dr Bree Allred speaking with Cassie Milligan a family nurse practitioner and owner of Revive Wellness and Aesthetics, discussing why many women feel exhausted, anxious, overwhelmed, gain weight, and sleep poorly despite being told their labs are “normal.” She explains her functional, cash-based approach to hormone optimization that considers the whole body—sex hormones, thyroid, adrenals, gut health, iron/ferritin, and symptoms—rather than treating lab ranges alone. 00:00 Not Feeling Like Yourself 01:10 Meet Hormone Expert Cassie Milligan 05:23 Functional Whole Body Approach 08:16 What Optimal Really Means 10:56 When to Test Hormones 21:51 Adrenals And Cortisol Basics 24:03 Hormones In Plain English Thank you for listening to Healing at Your Core. Why I Created Aylara Pelvic Health

Dr. Bree Allred explains why she created Aylara Pelvic Health, citing that women have been underserved by a medical system historically based on male biology and siloed specialties, leaving many pelvic health concerns dismissed or normalized. She describes common issues women bring—painful periods, painful intercourse, infertility challenges, postpartum dysfunction, bladder and bowel problems, exercise-related leaking, pelvic organ prolapse symptoms, and perimenopause/menopause changes—and her goal of being a last stop for answers through evidence-based care, transparent guidance, and appropriate referrals (e.g., endometriosis specialists, colorectal surgeons, OBGYNs, urogynecologists). Aylara’s values emphasize safety, love, growth, collaboration, and hope, with care across life stages and outside an insurance-driven model. She shares the name’s origin: from “Ayla” (Turkish for moonlight) and “Ara,” meaning outer light meeting inner light to create wholeness. 00:00 Purpose of Aylara 01:25 Stories That Sparked Aylara 02:57 Being Heard and Believed 04:32 Education Options Collaboration 06:21 Clinic Values Safety Love 08:47 Care Across Life Stages 11:23 Changing Healthcare Culture 14:28 A Different Kind of Clinic 16:31 Why Join the Movement 17:10 Meaning Behind Aylara Thank you for listening to Healing at Your Core.
