Delete the app? Maternal Instinct vs. the algorithm + optimisation

We’re officially live!! We are Harriet and Charlie, two new mums navigating early motherhood. Welcome to our first official episode of In the thick!  Baby apps, maternal instinct, and the pressure to get motherhood right -  we're diving in for our first ever episode. We’re exploring the world of baby tracking apps. Are they a helpful tool or are they quietly getting in the way of trusting yourself? Huckleberry, Nanit, Wonder Weeks, Peanut, Solid Starts - the list goes on. We share our honest, personal experiences of leaning on technology in those early days, and what it does to your confidence as a mum. No expertise, no advice, just real conversation about navigating new mum life amid the noise, the optimisation culture, and the pressure to do everything right. This is for all new mums looking for genuine conversations in the thick of it. In this episode:  Life updates: Charlie prepares for a major transition + Harriet navigates the 8-month sleep regression  The main topic: Charlie shares a huge penny drop moment around her use of apps + the impact on her experience as a new mum App culture in early motherhood: honest reflections on our obsessive use of parenting apps and whether it helped or created anxiety The self-optimisation trap: how the same "self-optimisation" culture infiltrating adult wellness has now reached early motherhood Maternal instinct vs. data: are apps replacing listening to our gut feeling? Charlie has deleted all her apps and feels more in tune with her baby than ever Guest voice notes: Harriet's mum shares how she raised babies 40+ years ago with nothing but a pad, pencil, and a Marks & Spencer baby book + Harriet's doula Celia makes a beautiful case for trusting intuition over data The "village" we've lost: on loneliness, shame, and how modern individualism has eroded the communal support new mothers need Next episode: Harriet and Charlie are going back to the very beginning - looking at the first 10 days - when you get home + go “what the f*ck” Find us on TikTok + Instagram: @inthethickpodcast

  2. Season 1 Trailer

Don't listen to social media. Listen to us.

Hiiii! We’re Harriet + Charlie. We’re two new mums who found each other in early pregnancy.  New motherhood is all consuming and there’s a lot of figuring out to do.There’s a lot out there pre- baby +  a ton of advice and expertise, but where is the chat about what happens after the baby arrives? Early motherhood is layered and we figured other new (+ future) mums might be feeling like us - so we wanted to create a space to cover more than base level and to not so quietly say - this is f*cking hard! Yes there will be some chat about sleep, weaning + milestones, but we also talk about the loneliness that comes on a random Wednesday evening, the baby steps out into our new life, the back to work juggle, experiencing grief and loss, the expectations (ours and of wider culture), how our relationships have changed. How we’ve fundamentally changed.  We’re building a community for anyone feeling in the thick  of it, right now. Welcome in 3  In this episode, we introduce ourselves + talk about what we wish existed after the baby arrived. We cover our journeys as two career-driven women who both left home and moved to London 15 + years ago to make a life for ourselves in the city. We talk about our first meet, where we instantly bonded + built a friendship rooted in honesty + humour during one of life's most overwhelming transitions. From navigating newborn chaos while knee-deep in Reddit threads and social media noise, to processing grief, making new friends and the pressure to have it all together - this is the type of conversation we hope you’ll love for honest, warm, and zero surface-level fluff.
