    Reflections

    Pen's first year check up looms but a return to the breast clinic is the last place she wants to be. "However warm and caring and gentle the staff, there’s no getting round the fact that the breast clinic is not about good news, even the good news I did get there was set against the context of the fact that it could have been much, much worse news. Learning something isn’t as bad as it could have been doesn’t make it good, it just makes it a bit less bad.  Being braced for terrible news leaves a residue, the walls of the hospital clinic are sticky with it..."

    Bruised

    Pen starts to find strength through her fellow breast cancer warriors, leaning in to their common experience and challenges... "I’m not sure the collective noun for breast cancer survivors but there’s so very many of us I’m tempted to coin one.  A ‘bruise’ of survivors perhaps, because we all are, bruised, we’re black and blue with it, even a year on hardly any of us are fading to green and yellow."     F**k Normal!

    Pen keeps being asked if she's 'back to normal' and the question bugs her... "This week I’ve been snagged by the word ‘normal’, kind of a dull, grey, word at best. Normal doesn’t sound like she’d stay out all night, doing drugs and shagging random strangers, no, Normal sounds more of a nice cup of tea and a biscuit (probably a custard cream) kinda girl. Normal is a bit more Norma Jean than Marilyn."     Cancerversary

    For loads of people, the first anniversary of their diagnosis is significant and Pen's no different but in considering how she feels about the looming 'cancerversary' she realises there are crumbs of comfort lurking in the shadows... "Of course I will always remember when I found out I had cancer, why would I forget, but I don’t need to do anything more than let myself acknowledge it and, if I do happen to allow myself to dip back into those indescribably painful weeks and months after my diagnosis, I need to make sure I don’t just see my personal struggles but also make room for the ongoing warmth, love, support and friendship that underpin all those moments we went through..."     Underwired!

    The great bra throwaway is looming but Pen's feeling reluctant... "maybe that turn of the year, spring clean thing, is kicking in.  It suddenly feels pressing. But it’s a spikey, gnarly, tear stain of a decision.  I’ve never been one for fancy, expensive underwear but maybe that means the few nice bras I do have carry more significance.  I need to throw away my old bras because they don’t fit, they won’t ever fit again and the thought of an underwire, albeit encased in fabric, insistent, pushing and rubbing against the creased flesh beneath my reconstructed breast makes my teeth want to unseat themselves in horror.  I’d go ten rounds with nails and a blackboard before I could go ten seconds with wires and bad boob..."
