The Uncomfortable Truth About Cheating in Sport | MindSets Podcast | Episode 103

What actually counts as cheating in sport? We kick things off with a round-up of the week's sports news. We get into: Tigst Assefa running 2:11:04 at the Berlin Marathon, despite being inside world record pace before struggling with cramp late in the race. Guye Adola winning the men's race in 2:02:50, with three men finishing under 2:04. Shubman Gill producing an unbelievable ODI innings against the West Indies, scoring 223 from 133 balls* and reaching 200 from just 117 deliveries, the fastest ODI double century ever. India somehow chasing down 406 with 39 balls remaining, despite the West Indies having three different centurions in their innings. George Russell winning the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, plus the fallout from the Lando Norris and Franco Colapinto collision. And Novak Djokovic returning to the China Open for the first time in 11 years. Then we get into the main topic. Where do you actually draw the line on cheating? We start with Manchester City after an independent Premier League commission found the club guilty of serious financial rule breaches across nine seasons. We try to break down what City were actually found guilty of in normal terms, how sponsorship money and owner funding work, why the difference matters under football's financial rules, and how making revenue look higher or costs look lower could give a club more room to spend. But if none of that actually happens on the football pitch, is it still cheating? From there, we go through some of the biggest cheating scandals in sport and see whether our definition changes depending on what someone has actually done. There's Lance Armstrong, his seven Tour de France wins and the doping system that eventually saw him stripped of all seven titles and banned from cycling for life. We look at Sandpapergate, when Cameron Bancroft was caught using sandpaper to alter the cricket ball, and the involvement of Steve Smith and David Warner that resulted in major bans for all three players. Then there's the Houston Astros sign-stealing scandal, where technology was used to work out what pitches were coming and relay that information to their hitters during their 2017 World Series-winning season. We also get into F1's infamous Crashgate, when Nelson Piquet Jr deliberately crashed at the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix to help Renault teammate Fernando Alonso, who went on to win the race without apparently knowing what had been planned. And finally, Bloodgate, when Harlequins used fake blood to manufacture an injury and take advantage of rugby's blood substitution rules. All completely different examples of cheating, but all of them raise slightly different questions about where the line actually is. Is deliberately breaking any rule cheating? Does there need to be deception involved? What if you break a rule on purpose but accept the punishment? And why do we call some things cheating, while other deliberate rule breaking gets called gamesmanship? Professional fouls, tactical penalties, time wasting, exploiting loopholes. At what point does doing whatever you can to win actually make you a cheat? We put it to the guests and see where everyone draws their own line. Then we finish things off with Grinds My Gears and some Hot Takes from this week's guests. . 🎙️ Hosted by Angus Cook 🎧 LISTEN EVERYWHERE:https://linktr.ee/mindsets_podcast 📸 FOLLOW MINDSETS: MindSets Podcast:https://www.instagram.com/mindsets_podcast/ Angus Cook:https://www.instagram.com/anguscook/ TikTok:https://www.tiktok.com/@mindsets_podcast 📩 BUSINESS ENQUIRIES:mindsetspod@gmail.com 🤝 OFFICIAL PARTNERS Hystyle Clothing:https://www.hystyleclo.com Use code MINDSET15 for 15% OFF #MindSetsPodcast #SportsPodcast #CheatingInSport #ManchesterCity #ManCity #PremierLeague #LanceArmstrong #Cycling #Doping #Sandpapergate #Cricket #ShubmanGill #HoustonAstros #Formula1 #F1 #Crashgate #Bloodgate #BerlinMarathon #TigstAssefa #Running #SportsNews #Gamesmanship #GrindsMyGears #HotTakes

The Most Controversial Week in Sports Media | MindSets Podcast | Episode 102

The Most Controversial Week in Sports Media | MindSets Podcast | Episode 102 This week, Angus is back with a solo episode covering some of the biggest, strangest and most controversial stories from across the sporting world. We kick things off with a round-up of the week's sports news — from huge endurance performances and major championship results to some achievements that are almost difficult to comprehend. We get into: Kimi Antonelli taking victory at Formula 1's first Madrid Grand Prix. Enric Mas finally getting his hands on a Grand Tour victory at the Vuelta a España. Josh Kerr delivering for Great Britain at the World Athletics Ultimate Championship, alongside some brilliant performances from the British team. Alexander Zverev and Elena Rybakina being crowned US Open singles champions. Ultrarunner Megan Eckert somehow covering more than 636 miles in six days. Stephen Biebelhausen running a ridiculous 4:17 mile while pushing his daughter in a stroller. And a look ahead to the Berlin Marathon, including Tigst Assefa's return to the course where she ran her former 2:11:53 marathon world record. But then we get into two stories that have generated a very different kind of attention online. First, the huge controversy surrounding Sydney Sweeney and a sports betting advertisement - looking beyond the outrage itself and into the reality of modern sports marketing. Was the backlash genuinely a disaster for the campaign? Or, in an industry built around attention, engagement and people talking about your brand, did the controversy actually achieve exactly what the marketing was designed to do? Then there's HYROX Beijing and an incident that has generated plenty of conversation of its own. We look at the now infamous "Poo-gate", what actually happened with Joanna during the race, the reaction online and whether the fallout - or at least the way it was subsequently handled and amplified, may have been more intentional than it first appeared. From there, it's time to get some things off our chests with another listener-powered edition of Grinds My Gears. This week's GMGs include influencers standing up and walking around while play is still underway at the US Open, people who stand up the second a plane lands despite having absolutely nowhere to go, warm water coming out of gym drinking fountains, and plenty more listener grievances. And finally, we finish with a fitness edition of Would You Rather, using your submissions. Including: Would you rather have a 10-year career where you're consistently very good but never quite the best, or have one incredible year where you're genuinely at the top of the world before completely falling off? Plus plenty more horrible fitness and sporting dilemmas. From world records and Grand Tour victories to sports marketing, online controversy, questionable race incidents, gym annoyances and some genuinely difficult Would You Rathers - there's a lot to unpack in Episode 102. 🎙️ Hosted by Angus Cook 🎧 LISTEN EVERYWHERE: https://linktr.ee/mindsets_podcast 📸 FOLLOW MINDSETS: MindSets Podcast: https://www.instagram.com/mindsets_podcast/ Angus Cook: https://www.instagram.com/anguscook/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@mindsets_podcast 📩 BUSINESS ENQUIRIES: mindsetspod@gmail.com 🤝 OFFICIAL PARTNERS Hystyle Clothing: https://www.hystyleclo.com Use code MINDSET15 for 15% OFF #MindSetsPodcast #SportsPodcast #SydneySweeney #HYROX #HYROXBeijing #USOpen #Formula1 #F1 #VueltaAEspana #EnricMas #JoshKerr #WorldAthletics #BerlinMarathon #TigstAssefa #Ultrarunning #MeganEckert #Running #EnduranceSport #FitnessPodcast #SportsNews #SportsMedia #SportsMarketing #GrindsMyGears #WouldYouRather

Defining Capability with Former Paralympian and Endurance Athlete, Dave Wetherill | MindSets Podcast | Episode 101

This week, Angus is joined by former Paralympian turned endurance athlete David Wetherill. Born with multiple epiphyseal dysplasia, a condition affecting bone development, David went on to become an elite Class 6 para table tennis player, representing Great Britain at three Paralympic Games: Beijing 2008, London 2012 and Rio 2016. You may have seen David without even knowing his name. At London 2012, he produced one of the most iconic moments of the Games — an incredible diving table tennis winner while playing with a crutch, a shot that went viral around the world. But David's sporting story didn't end with the Paralympics. We kick things off with some of the biggest sports stories, including: Yomif Kejelcha's incredible 56:51 half-marathon world record.Britain's Matthew Brennan taking another victory at the Vuelta a España.Tadej Pogačar continuing to show his class. The Seattle Seahawks reportedly being sold for $9.6 billion.Jakub Menšík and Karolína Muchová winning the US Open mixed doubles title.Controversy surrounding the Sydney Marathon medals.Plus the latest from Formula 1 at Zandvoort. Then we get into David's remarkable sporting career. We discuss how he first found table tennis, what took him from picking up a bat to representing Great Britain on the biggest stage in para sport, and what life was really like as an elite Paralympic athlete. David takes us through the decision to step away from table tennis and the difficult question that followed: what comes next when the sport that has defined such a huge part of your life is suddenly gone? The answer eventually became endurance sport. We talk about: David's journey from discovering table tennis to becoming a three-time Paralympian. The story behind his famous viral shot at London 2012.Why he eventually stepped away from elite table tennis.Finding a new sporting identity after retirement. Why he was drawn towards endurance sport and pushing his physical limits. His journey into HYROX and being named Inspirational Athlete of the Year.Taking on full-distance Ironman triathlons.Completing the 3.8km swim and 180km bike in incredibly tough conditions. The reality of attempting an Ironman twice without reaching the finish line. How David approaches setbacks, competition and challenges that might appear impossible from the outside. We also get some grievances off our chests in another edition of Grinds My Gears, including people taking up the entire pavement with umbrellas, questionable FAGE yoghurt consumption, gym farting etiquette and the frustration of being asked how many sets you have left when you're already on your final one. To finish, David's sporting knowledge is put to the test. From Paralympic table tennis and HYROX to the London Marathon and the history of Ironman, we find out how much a man who has competed across these worlds actually knows about them. This is a conversation about elite sport, identity, failure, adaptation and what happens when you're forced to find a new challenge after spending years competing at the highest level. 🎙️ Hosted by Angus Cook, with special guest David Wetherill 📸 Follow David:Instagramhttps://www.instagram.com/wetherill.para.fit/ 🎧 Listen Everywhere:https://linktr.ee/mindsets_podcast 📸 Follow MindSets:MindSets Podcasthttps://www.instagram.com/mindsets_podcast/ Angus Cookhttps://www.instagram.com/anguscook/ TikTokhttps://www.tiktok.com/@mindsets_podcast 📩 Business Enquiriesmindsetspod@gmail.com 🤝 Official Partners Hystyle Clothinghttps://www.hystyleclo.comUse code MINDSET15 for 15% OFF #MindSetsPodcast #DavidWetherill #Paralympics #Paralympian #ParaTableTennis #TeamGB #HYROX #HYROXTraining #Ironman #Triathlon #Endurance #EnduranceSport #London2012 #AdaptiveAthlete #HybridAthlete #Mindset #Resilience #SportsPodcast #FitnessPodcast

The BEST sporting moment of all time | MindSets Podcast | Episode 100

We Tried to Pick the Greatest Sporting Moment Ever WAIT...We made it to Episode 100!? Before anything else, a huge thank you to every person who has watched, listened, shared or supported The MindSets Podcast. Whether you’ve joined us for one episode, discovered us somewhere along the journey or somehow made it through all 100, you’ve helped us reach a milestone that once felt impossibly far away. For this special episode, Angus is joined once again by Roscoe Carter-Johnson from the Diet Starts Monday Podcast—with Charles missing the centenary celebrations—to tackle one enormous question: What is the greatest sporting moment of all time? There’s no news, no Grind My Gears and no game this week. Instead, Angus and Roscoe go sport by sport through some of the most iconic, emotional and unbelievable moments the world of sport has ever produced. The debate includes: ⚽ The Miracle of Istanbul, Sergio Agüero’s title-winning goal, Lionel Messi finally lifting the World Cup, England’s Lionesses winning the Euros and Tottenham’s dramatic 2008 League Cup triumph over Chelsea. 🏈 Malcolm Butler’s Super Bowl interception, Marshawn Lynch’s legendary Beast Quake and Tom Brady completing the greatest comeback in Super Bowl history from 28–3 down. 🏏 England reclaiming the Ashes in 2005, Ben Stokes’ extraordinary unbeaten 135 at Headingley and the unforgettable 2019 Cricket World Cup Super Over. 🏃 Usain Bolt’s 100m world record, Roger Bannister’s four-minute mile, Paula Radcliffe’s marathon world record and Eliud Kipchoge becoming the first person to run a marathon distance in under two hours. 🏎 Lewis Hamilton winning his first Formula One World Championship on the final corner of the final lap. 🎾 Andy Murray becoming Wimbledon champion. 🏊 Julie Moss crawling towards the finish line at the 1982 Ironman World Championship in Kona. ⛰ Jasmin Paris becoming the first woman to finish the Barkley Marathons—with only 99 seconds remaining before the 60-hour cut-off. ⛳ Tiger Woods’ iconic chip on the 16th at the 2005 Masters, his incredible comeback victory at Augusta in 2019 and Rory McIlroy finally completing the career Grand Slam. Some moments changed a match. Others changed an entire sport. Some produced almost impossible performances under pressure, while others became unforgettable because of the emotion, perseverance or cultural impact behind them. But which one deserves to be called the greatest sporting moment ever? Angus and Roscoe bring their own nominations, debate the listeners’ suggestions and attempt to reach a final answer in this special centenary episode. The Protein Problem and Why You Fall For it | MindSets Podcast | Episode 98

Welcome back to The MindSets Podcast! With Charles still away, Angus is joined by his partner Amy for an episode all about one of the most talked-about, and heavily marketed, parts of modern nutrition: Protein. We kick things off with the biggest sports stories of the week, including: LeBron James going to play for the Philadelphia 76ers. UK Sport pulling funding from British snowsports. A roundup of the Commonwealth Games. Nike releasing a new hybrid training and HYROX shoe. Plus more news from across the sporting world. Then we get into the main topic: How much protein do you actually need—and are high-protein products worth your money? We break down how the body uses protein, why exercise is essential for building muscle and what happens when you consume more protein than your body needs. We also discuss: UK protein recommendations versus the needs of performance athletes. How protein supports muscle growth and recovery. Whether your body can use more than 30g of protein in one meal. Why the post-workout “anabolic window” is largely exaggerated. The benefits of spreading protein intake throughout the day. How protein can support fullness, fat loss and muscle retention. Protein’s effect on hunger hormones and GLP-1. Whether protein could become the next major weight-loss marketing trend. The difference between “source of protein” and “high protein” claims. How collagen and different protein sources affect the headline number. The environmental impact of producing protein. Why protein powder has become so expensive. Angus also introduces his simple Protein 10 Rule for assessing whether a protein product offers good nutritional value: Multiply the protein by 10 for the calorie limit.Divide the protein by 10 for the maximum price in pounds. For example, a product containing 20g of protein should ideally contain no more than 200 calories and cost no more than £2. It isn’t a perfect nutritional formula, but it provides a quick way to compare protein bars, yoghurts, cereals, snacks and ready meals without being distracted by the marketing on the packaging. We also share our favourite protein snacks before another edition of Grinds My Gears, featuring online deals appearing immediately after you have already ordered, the relentless UK heat, the confusing name “full-fat Coke” and gym TVs taking over the speakers when everyone would rather hear music. To finish the episode, Amy takes on a blind taste test with a difference. She tries a selection of meals and snacks and has to decide whether each one is a specially marketed protein product or the normal version. Expect some surprising comparisons, questionable flavours and very honest ratings. Whether you’re trying to build muscle, lose weight, improve your sporting performance or simply stop wasting money on overpriced protein snacks, this episode will help you look beyond the headline protein number. 🎙️ Hosted by Angus Cook, with special guest Amy 🎧 Listen Everywhere:https://linktr.ee/mindsets_podcast 📸 Follow MindSets: MindSets Podcasthttps://www.instagram.com/mindsets_podcast/ Angus Cookhttps://www.instagram.com/anguscook/ Charles Ingellhttps://www.instagram.com/chucks_life_/ TikTokhttps://www.tiktok.com/@mindsets_podcast 📩 Business Enquiriesmindsetspod@gmail.com 🤝 Official Partners Hystyle Clothinghttps://www.hystyleclo.com Use code MINDSET15 for 15% OFF Chapters 00:00 – Angus & Amy Introduce the Episode01:35 – Sports News: LeBron, Snowsports, Commonwealth Games & Nike05:26 – Protein: How Much Do You Actually Need?38:40 – Grinds My Gears55:10 – Protein Food Blind Taste Test #MindSetsPodcast #Protein #HighProtein #ProteinFoods #SportsNutrition #MuscleGrowth #WeightLoss #FitnessNutrition #ProteinPowder #HYROX #HybridTraining #SportsScience #NutritionMyths #GymNutrition #Podcast
