We hear from self-published author Ellie White on her debut publication ‘Love & London’ hearing all about how lockdown has inspired here to do what she loves and fall back in love with the North East! We hear from soul singer-songwriter Beth Macari ahead of her new release as well as what it takes to be a performer at such a young age. Finishing off with a short extract from Ellie White’s debate, specially preformed for #NELassCan by Hannah Small, Aimee Shields, Robert Wilson Baker and Kai Valentine.

In this episode we speak to Isabel Hunt from Sunderland support group Autism in Mind, chatting about her own experiences with her own diagnosis and signs to look out for. We will also be chatting to NE female rapper Kay Greyson on the stereotyping of female artists in the HipHop genre as well as dropping her FIRE new track ‘Paris’. It’s NE LASS CAN’s tradition to finish each episode tie something creative. This time we hear a short extract from the story ‘Killing Biff and Chip’ written by Claire Alexander and performed specially for NE LASS CAN by NE actor Emily Dodds. We are kicking off with a juicy conversation on pornography, sex work and the world of BDSM with assistant tutor at the University of Sunderland’s Rosie Hodsdons. Sound lass with an even sounder voice Georgie Lee will be dropping by for a chat about image and body confidence as well as dropping her debut track ‘Focus’. And to finish this episode we have a monologue named “Shit Man” which comes as a response to being twenty nine and single during a pandemic, navigating the world of dating digitally, written and voiced by Aimee Shields, a theatre maker from Newbottle.

    Episode 1 - Domestic Abuse, Olympics & Owning What You Do

    Oi Oi it’s Geordie lass Emma Millen here with the first ever episode of NE LASS CAN, a show designed to support local talent, creatives and businesses and prove that right here in the North East ANY lass can! For your first instalment we are joined by Becky Rogerson and Caira Bennet-Smith from support group Wearside Women in Need to discuss the effects of domestic abuse during a global pandemic. We have also teamed up with Sunderland Culture project ‘Rebel Women of Sunderland’ to highlight pioneering women from our city. This episode we speak to special guest Aly Dixon on what it’s like to preform on a world stage as part of Team GB. We chat with local star Jamilah on her music career and what’s to come as well as here news track ‘After 10’. And if that want already enough for you we will be finishing with a powerful poem written by April Ryan about her escape from domestic abuse, spoken by NE actor Florence McMahon.
