Any podcast that tries to bill itself as chronicling ‘underground culture’ & has hosts that think graffiti has no purpose (as they discussed in the latest episode, displaying a total lack of engagement with subcultural rave communities in London) is inherently politically inconsistent. It’s even more frustrating when they regularly try to present themselves as ‘rave goers’, and make sweeping statements from that position.
Even though they’re clearly very educated on music, sadly you can tell that the hosts surround themselves in an echo chamber of people of the same age / demographic as them. It feels out of touch. They also talk about partying all the time but have never mentioned accessibility in the context of the spaces they discuss & that’s super disappointing, because it makes it seem like they don’t care at all about disabled audiences. I’m sad cos I used to love this show! But I think it’s gotten too institutionalised (which often reads as smugness), and isn’t rigorous enough in its interrogation of themes anymore.
