Now I Know About Speaking With Confidence – Anila Dhami | E29

Anila Dhami is a multi award-winning News Presenter and Journalist, working with Sky News, ITV and 5 News. She also moderates events and panel discussions. Anila runs her own Public Speaking Confidence Workshops for individuals and groups. And she is UK Ambassador of Barnardo's, Binti International, and an Advisory Board Member of the Author In Me Literary Festival. What does it really take to stay calm, credible and compassionate when the world is watching?I had the pleasure of sitting down with Anila Dhami — multi award-winning news presenter, journalist and public speaking coach — for the latest episode of the Now I Know Podcast.Like many people, I’ve often watched breaking news unfold and wondered: how do journalists prepare for the unexpected? One thing Anila said really stayed with me:“In a breaking news environment, it can be high pressure… but it’s about being kind to everyone involved because it is teamwork. Everybody is working on the same story with the same intention — getting it accurate, getting it right, getting it on air.”That reminder about kindness under pressure felt incredibly powerful. In this episode, we also talk about: ✨ How helping her parents on a market stall shaped the way she communicates ✨ Being recognised by Baroness Brady as a future female leader ✨ How to truly be present in conversations and build trust ✨ Blocking out noise and distractions when speaking ✨ Why confidence is something you can learn and practise And one quote from Anila that perfectly captures why trusted voices matter today:“In an age of fake news and social media, not knowing what’s real and what’s fake, it’s important to have someone at the heart of the story who is trusted.” Also… fair warning: I did not expect Anila’s answer to the final question to make me emotional 🥺 This conversation is full of wisdom, warmth and practical insights on communication, confidence and staying grounded under pressure.
