Introducing Safe Enough from Things That Go Boom. Follow the show: Things That Go Boom After a Norfolk Southern train carrying toxic chemicals derailed in East Palestine, Ohio, residents were told the air was safe and the situation was under control. But for many people living there, the emergency never really ended. In this episode, East Palestine resident and Rail Watch founder Jess Conard takes us inside the chaos and confusion of the derailment’s aftermath: shifting evacuation zones, lingering chemical smells, chronic health problems, and the exhausting burden of trying to prove harm after disaster strikes. But this story isn’t just about one train derailment. It’s about what actually counts as an emergency in the eyes of the federal government — and what kind of response that label unlocks. As Congress routinely moves billions of dollars quickly and flexibly for war and national security priorities, communities impacted by industrial disaster often struggle to access long-term healthcare, environmental testing, or meaningful support. Through conversations with budget experts Steve Ellis and Julia Gledhill, this episode examines how emergency spending works, how “urgent” becomes a political category, and what those choices reveal about whose suffering matters. Because emergencies don’t just expose broken systems. They expose what those systems were built to protect. Guests: Jess Conard, founder and executive director of Rail WatchSteve Ellis, president of Taxpayers for Common SenseJulia Gledhill, research analyst at the Stimson Center Additional Resources:  Rail Watch The Ghost Budget: US War Spending & Fiscal Transparency, Linda J. Pablo Juarez-Bertadillo

Pablo Juarez-Bertadillo is a predator caught in a Genesee County, Michigan investigation.  At the time of the sting, Juarez had been living in Burton, Michigan. He unlawfully immigrated to the United States from Mexico sometime around 2019. He worked in roofing. Juarez had been communicating with a decoy posing as a fifteen-year-old girl. At first, Juarez discussed paying $100 for sex with the girl. After learning of her age, he responded "oh really," followed by immediately requesting her address. Juarez asked the decoy if she was available and whether she was a police officer. Upon being assured that she was not, Juarez said that he would be at the location within five minutes. Seeing the impending confrontation as a test to his language skills, Chris told the decoy that he would need to utilize what he learned from his four years of honors-level Spanish classes in high school. When asked why he came to the house, Juarez told Chris that it was to work on the roof. In response, Chris asked Juarez how to say "b******t" in Spanish.  Sponsored by: AquaTru: Head to https://AquaTru.com & use code HANSEN for 20% off your purifier and a 30-day best-tasting water guarantee.  TruthFinder.com.
