    My guest today 64 Year old Ultra Runner Rick Martin. Yes you read that correct 64 year old Ultra runner and that’s not the only amazing thing, at 50 years old Rick was diagnosed with 60%-80% blockage in both arteries. A subsequent nuclear stress test indicated blockage in his heart.  Facing a lifetime of prescription drugs and the possibility of requiring the same surgery his father underwent at age 80, Rick decided to perform his own research for alternative solutions to his health problems. Based on books and studies, he made radical changes to his diet, started attending yoga classes, and joined a hiking club.     Ed Kressy is a self-defense instructor, a budding entrepreneur, a volunteer first responder, a friend and family member. Yet at his core he considers himself a garden-variety recovered drug addict. Ed discusses his early life of self loathing which led him into alcohol and drug abuse, enabling him to feel like somebody other than himself. Ed eventually became hooked on Methamphetamine which initially started off self medicinal, still allowing him to function and work until eventually the addiction almost ruined his life. After 11 years hooked on Meth, Ed managed to get sober through the 12 step programme and what he calls the 3 S’s - Spirituality, Self Help and Service to others. Ed now selflessly serves many others within his community which has been so well received by the FBI he was awarded the FBI Directors Community Leadership Award.

His career highlights have so far included a short film ‘7 Reasons Why’ being featured at the Cannes Film Festival and the feature length film ‘Get Gone’ which was filmed in Derby and is due out on Netflix Autumn 2020. We discuss Gurmit’s journey into the world of TV and Film and his love and affiliation with the City of Derby including why he chose to film Get Gone in his hometown despite its lack of notoriety.     Jon  Macaskill  is  a  Navy  SEAL Commander  turned  mindfulness  and meditation  teacher. He’s  a Naval Academy  graduate  and  has  his masters  in  Operations Research from the Naval Postgraduate School.  Jon has served  in  Iraq, Afghanistan, off the coast of Somalia,  and  in  Panama. He now  runs  his  own  consulting company, Macaskill Consulting, LLC, bringing mindfulness and meditation to high performing teams to aid in dealing with  stress,  anxiety  and  depression all  while  increasing focus,  creativity, and  productivity.  He also serves  as the Deputy Executive Director for Veteran’s PATH, a nonprofit organisation that works to introduce meditation  and mindfulness  to  veterans to bring them a sense of Peace, Acceptance, Transformation and Honour.   We discuss Jon's decision to join the Navy in honour of the United States Flag and what it represents after emigrating from South Africa with his parents. We look at the selection process and the mental fortitude required to get through BUDS (Basic Underwater Demolition SEAL) training and Jon opens up about his struggles with survivors guilt, which ultimately led to him into healing through mindfulness and meditation.
