BOOK CLUB: You and Me on Vacation

BOOK CLUB: You and Me on Vacation

    Why hello there, book clubbers!

This month, we read 'You and Me on Vacation' by Emily Henry, and boy oh boy did it deliver on its promise to be a sugary, frothy read. Protagonists Alex and Poppy have nothing in common. She's a wild child; he wears khakis. She has insatiable wanderlust; he prefers to stay home with a book. And somehow, ever since a fateful car-share home from college many years ago, they are the very best of friends. For most of the year they live far apart-she's in New York City, and he's in their small hometown-but every summer, for a decade, they go on holiday together. It's a story of girl meets boy, girl befriends boy, girl falls in love with boy, girl loses boy, and then, finally, girl gets boy back.

Today on the show, Mich, Zara, and Annabelle discuss the book's structure, believability, ending, and eeeverything in between.

Review on Episode ‘A Big Bad Week for Aussies Influencers’

I want to start by saying that I generally love this show and Zara & Michelle. They are witty and thoughtfully present and discuss the latest in media.

This episode however, made a few mis-steps in my opinion. Firstly, while I do not condone what Georgia Love posted at all, believe it was racist and that she should have properly owned up to it, I did not agree with the way her occupation was explained to the audience. Yes, she’s an influencer most known as being the Bachelorette but she’s also educated, a journalist and a business woman. I think more should be done to properly present to the roles and occupation of the people being discussed rather than passing them off as just an influencer. If anything, the fact that Georgia Love is educated and a working professional puts more onus on her to act with integrity and respect towards others.

The second and more troubling issue I had with this episode is when long distance relationships were discussed. Zara made a comment that when partners who have been in a long distance relationship come together and live together often the relationship breaks down very quickly because they are used to the dynamic of their relationship being long distance. This comment was followed by another remark to the effect of, maybe this is how it is or I’m not sure which was then followed by a cackle of laughter by the girls. I felt this whole discussion was insensitive and rude to the thousands of people who are currently in long distance relationships as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic and have been fighting to be reunited with their partners. Making flippant comments which essentially go so far to say that someone’s long distance relationship is doomed to fail is rude, insensitive and inconsiderate. I have personally been in a long term, long distance relationship and am finally reunited with my partner. We are happy and have learnt so much about each other by living together and have grown so much. Just because either of these girls may never consider doing long distance with their partners doesn’t mean they should make dismissive and insensitive comments. If they do so, they truly are shameless and not in a good way.

Zara and Michelle sometimes come off as immature and their opinions not well considered. Everyone is entitled to their opinion but you should always be respectful of others.
