Welcome to Sound Affects, a music and mental health podcast created by me, Katerina, a qualified therapist and former music writer. The first episode is with ex-guitarist of The Cooper Temple Clause, Tom Bellamy, about the day he woke up with tinnitus so severe that he fell into deep, ongoing depression. In my second episode, I speak to lead guitarist of The Band Delta, whose dream of becoming a rock n roll star got dashed when he was diagnosed with testicular cancer aged 36, just two weeks after getting a record deal. In my third and fourth episodes, I visit a high-security in-patient psychiatric hospital to learn how music therapy can help people with severe psychosis. I also chat with Adam Ficek of Babyshambles, Creation Records founder Alan McGee, The Music Industry Therapist Collective and more. Throughout, I investigate the power of music, the psychology of being in a band or creating a living as an artist, and the culture and impact of the music industry on the people within it. Episodes contain a mix of personal stories, professional and expert opinion and science, news updates, support and advice all focused on music, music psychology and mental health. All the episodes are sensitive to mental health issues and I provide links and helpline numbers with every episode. My aim is to bring issues out into the open in a warm, respectful way while giving insight into this fascinating area. I really hope you'll join me on this exploratory journey.
