It was a real-life Wolf Creek. In 1978, three friends left Alice Springs on an adventure exploring the Australian outback. Weeks later, a man walking his dog stumbled across their bodies in a remote area of bushland in North Queensland. They’d been hunted down and shot, one of the victims dying as he clutched hold of a tree. Police brought in to investigate were badly injured in a helicopter crash and soon after, the investigation stalled. The Courier-Mail explores one of Australia’s most forgotten mysteries: The Spear Creek murders. The killer is still out there.

Good podcast, straightforward story

This is a fairly gentle look at a 1978 cold case. The only real mystery of the case is that police seemed to overlook a rather obvious suspect (who has since been arrested by cold case detectives).

The story of the murders is sympathetically told and the victims are all given a voice through their families. I actually listened through at speed to most episodes. There’s nothing that’s ‘blink and you’ll miss it’ about the narrative and little complexity to the events so it’s an easy one to listen to.

I’ll be interested to see how the upcoming court case goes and this pod certainly gives you all the background you need to understand it.
