The notes and receipts for my remarks regarding Victor Davis Hanson. From my podcast three weeks ago where I quoted Victor Davis Hanson: The recent comments of Victor Davis Hanson, on what he’s saying now: U.S. Intelligence Shows Iran Retains Substantial Missile Capabilities Secret new assessments say Iran has operational access to 30 of its 33 missile sites along the Strait of Hormuz, suggesting that its military remains far stronger than President Trump has asserted. The Trump administration’s public portrayal of a shattered Iranian military is sharply at odds with what U.S. intelligence agencies are telling policymakers behind closed doors, according to classified assessments from early this month that show Iran has regained access to most of its missile sites, launchers and underground facilities. Trump’s Shrinking Ambitions on China The president came into office planning harsher trade moves on China than on the rest of the world. Here’s why he’s had to scale them back. China Increasingly Views Trump’s America as an Empire in Decline (The below is not a summary or transcript of the above podcast, but rather a compilation of various new sources pulled together.) * China needs the U.S. economy more than the U.S. needs ChinaThe argument is that China’s slowing economy still depends heavily on access to American consumers and markets, especially while dealing with debt problems and weaker growth. * China is vulnerable on energy and trade routesWith instability around the Strait of Hormuz, China has a huge interest in keeping global shipping and oil flowing. That gives Washington leverage. * China backed down before on trade pressureEven though China retaliated with rare earth restrictions, the broader point is probably that Beijing ultimately prefers stability and continued trade over a prolonged economic confrontation. * The U.S. still dominates militarily and financiallyThe dollar system, global naval power, sanctions capability, and alliances still give America structural advantages China cannot easily replace. * Xi Jinping may need stability more than Trump does politicallyChina’s leadership tends to prioritize internal stability and long-term economic calm, which can make Beijing cautious about escalation. Trump, meanwhile, often uses unpredictability as leverage. HUGE DISCLAIMER: One important thing: a lot of foreign-policy analysts actually argue the opposite right now — that China holds significant leverage because of rare earth minerals, manufacturing dominance, and America’s dependence on Chinese supply chains.
