Madame Web & the Strong Female Character Problem

Madame Web & the Strong Female Character Problem

Madame Web might be the worst superhero movie of all time but what are its similarities to other female centric comic book movies? Is it indicative of a pattern unique to the super-heroine genre that predestined it to be bad or is there something much more sinister at play with the reception and creation of these films? Host, Megan Cruz, unpacks the unpleasant realities of being sold a "strong female character" and the discomfort that comes with finding yourself on the wrong side of internet discourse. Madame Web, the Marvels, and Birds of Prey are all part of the larger discussion on what we get, what we deserve, and why these movies are the way they are.

Miss_McKinnon ,

Go to podcast from now on!!

As a young girl who always got a bit too obsessed with her favorite media as a kid turned teenager with aspirations to go into the film industry, particularly with hopes to expand the depth of female portrayal on screen this podcast is everything i could have hoped for and more. I originally found Megan through TikTok and would always stop whatever i was doing as soon as i saw she had a new commentary/analysis out and imagine my absolute joy when i found out that she not only has a podcast but the majority of episodes are an hour and a half long.

Just from the few episodes I've had time to listen to since discovering this i am OBSESSED, the nuance through which Megan explores the films she talks about, added on with the frequent feminist lens is such an interesting listen! That combined with the equally entertaining guests and the way everyone on this show speaks (as someone with extreme attention problems the way in which Megan talks never bores me) just makes this podcast THAT GOOD. Can't wait for any future episodes!
