    Is My Aquarium Overstocked? The "Add More Fish" Paradox

    How many fish can your aquarium actually hold? It sounds like a simple question, but stocking gets complicated quickly. A tank can have enough biological filtration to process waste and still be limited by oxygen, swimming space, territory, social behavior, or the amount of maintenance needed to keep the system stable. That becomes especially confusing with schooling fish. You may be told that a species needs a larger group to feel secure and behave more naturally—but at the same time, a stocking calculator may tell you that your aquarium is already full. So how can “add more fish” ever be the right advice? In this episode of Tank Guide Life, a product of FishKeepingLifeCo, we look at why aquarium stocking is about much more than a fish-per-gallon formula and how to think about the different limits that determine whether a stocking plan actually makes sense.     Why Is My Aquarium Cloudy? | Diagnosing White, Green & Brown Water

    Why is your aquarium water cloudy? White, green, brown, and hazy aquarium water can have very different causes—and figuring out what you’re actually looking at is the first step toward deciding whether you need to do anything about it. Cloudy aquarium water is a symptom, not a diagnosis. A milky bacterial bloom can look similar to suspended substrate dust or thousands of tiny microbubbles. Green water is usually a completely different issue involving free-floating algae, while brown or tea-colored water may simply be tannins released by driftwood, leaves, botanicals, or other materials in the aquarium. In this episode of Tank Guide Life, a product of FishKeepingLifeCo, we break down the major reasons aquarium water can look cloudy and the clues you can use to narrow down the cause before reaching for a product or making major changes to the tank. Sometimes the most important clue is the color. Other times, it’s when the cloudiness appeared and what happened immediately beforehand. Did you just set up the aquarium? Add sand or aquasoil? Disturb the substrate? Perform a water change? Clean or replace filter media? Add driftwood? Change the lighting? UV can be extremely useful for certain types of green water but won’t remove tannin coloration. Activated carbon may help remove tannins but isn’t a universal solution for suspended substrate dust. Fine mechanical filtration can capture particles, but it can’t fix every biological or chemical reason water may look different.     Your aquarium filter is doing more than just catching debris—and understanding what is actually happening inside it can completely change how you maintain your tank. Whether you should modify your water chemistry depends on the specific livestock you keep, your source water, your aquarium’s buffering capacity, and whether your parameters are stable or changing over time.     Why Are My Fish Dying When Water Parameters Are Good? (Or After a Water Change)

    Why are your aquarium fish dying even though your water parameters are good? Normal ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, and temperature readings can rule out some common problems, but they can’t tell you everything affecting your fish. Low dissolved oxygen, chlorine or chloramine exposure, disease, sudden changes in water chemistry, contamination, stress, and other problems may not show up in the tests you normally perform. In this episode of Tank Guide Life, we look beyond the usual water test results to explore why freshwater aquarium fish can become stressed, start gasping, behave abnormally, or die even when the water parameters seem normal. We also investigate another common and confusing problem: Why do fish sometimes struggle or die after a water change? A water change may be the last thing that happened before something went wrong, but that doesn’t necessarily mean fresh water itself was the cause. Temperature differences, chlorine or chloramine, sudden changes in water chemistry, low oxygen, source-water differences, filter maintenance, substrate disturbance, equipment problems, and other changes made during aquarium maintenance can all provide important clues. We’ll also look beyond water quality itself. Disease and parasites, acclimation and shipping stress, aggression, nutrition, livestock health, injuries, and other factors can affect fish even when your aquarium tests look good. It’s to help you understand what your water tests can tell you, what they can’t tell you, and how to look for additional clues when something in your aquarium doesn’t seem right.
