What Tutors Can Learn From Other Industries

In this episode, I explore why some of the most valuable business lessons for tutors can come from stepping outside the education world altogether. After attending the SBS Conference as a Small Business Sunday winner, I experienced firsthand how connecting with business owners from different industries can bring fresh ideas, renewed energy, and a completely different perspective on growth. From hearing keynote speakers discuss systems, profitability, and sustainability to watching entrepreneurs pitch their businesses, the event highlighted how much tutors can learn when they step beyond the tutoring bubble. I also share how networking outside education helps you refine your elevator pitch, build confidence talking about your business, and create unexpected opportunities through connections that may lead to referrals, partnerships, and even new clients. While networking with fellow tutors remains incredibly valuable for support, collaboration, and referrals, combining both tutor-focused and wider business networking can open doors you never expected. 3 Key Takeaways:Fresh Perspectives Drive Growth Spending time with business owners outside the tutoring industry exposes you to new ideas, strategies, and ways of thinking that can strengthen your own business. Your Elevator Pitch Matters Explaining your business to people who know nothing about tutoring forces you to communicate your value clearly and confidently. Opportunities Often Come From Unexpected Places Many valuable referrals, partnerships, and client connections happen through people outside your immediate industry, making wider business networking a powerful growth tool. What Taking a Month Off Taught Me About My Tutoring Business

In this episode, I share one of the biggest lessons I’ve learned while building my tutoring business: rest isn’t the opposite of productivity — it’s often what creates the clarity to make better decisions. Like many tutors, I carried an “endurance mindset” from teaching into business, saying yes to everything, filling every available slot, and constantly staying busy. After taking a month away while traveling in Thailand, I realised the business didn’t fall apart without me constantly working. Stepping away helped me see what was truly moving the business forward versus what was simply keeping me occupied, leading me to invest in systems and a CRM to save time, reduce stress, and build a more sustainable business focused on impact rather than hours worked. 3 Key Takeaways: Rest Creates Clarity Stepping away from constant work can provide the mental space needed to make better business decisions and identify what truly matters. Busy Doesn’t Always Mean Productive Filling every hour with work can create the illusion of progress, but sustainable growth comes from focusing on high-impact tasks rather than constant activity. Systems Create Freedom Investing in systems, processes, and tools like a CRM can reduce mental load, streamline communication, and create more time for both business growth and personal life. When Your Tutoring Business Starts Taking Over Your Home Life

In this episode, Jane Bilham explores the hidden challenge many tutors and business owners face: the constant mental switching between roles. From tutoring sessions and parenting responsibilities to client communication and business tasks, she explains how constantly changing hats can lead to stress, overwhelm, and burnout. Drawing on her experience building an international tutoring business, Jane shares three practical strategies to create better balance and clearer boundaries: using a “big three” priority system, changing physical workspace to improve focus, and developing a simple end-of-day shutdown routine to mentally switch off from work. 3 Key Takeaways: Small Transitions Reduce Mental Overload Moving directly from one responsibility to another without pause can feel exhausting. Creating small transition moments between roles helps the brain reset and improves focus. Priorities Create Clarity Using a simple “big three” system keeps daily tasks aligned with larger business and personal goals, making decision-making easier and reducing overwhelm. Environment Shapes Productivity Changing physical workspace and creating clear end-of-day routines can strengthen work-life boundaries and make it easier to switch off mentally after work. Why Human Connection Still Matters in an Online Tutoring Business

In this episode, Jane Billham reflects on how meeting her business partners in person for the first time after more than five years of working online transformed her tuition business in ways no strategy ever had. Although the partnership had grown successfully through Zoom, WeChat, and email, she realised that imposter syndrome had quietly kept her from arranging face-to-face meetings sooner. She shares how a simple lunch in London immediately strengthened trust, improved communication, and created a stronger sense of alignment that had been difficult to build remotely. Drawing on a similar experience meeting partners and clients in Shanghai in 2024, Jane explores how in-person connection can accelerate opportunities, simplify decision-making, and deepen professional relationships far more quickly than online communication alone. She encourages tutors, particularly those building online businesses, not to overlook the value of human connection alongside systems, marketing, and automation. Ultimately, this episode is a reminder that relationships are often the real foundation of sustainable business growth. 3 Key Takeaways: Human Connection Builds Trust Faster While online communication can sustain a business, meeting in person often creates a level of trust, ease, and understanding that can take months or years to develop remotely. Imposter Syndrome Can Keep You Playing Small Even successful business owners can delay opportunities because they feel they are “not ready yet.” Recognising these hidden fears can open the door to growth. Relationships Matter More Than Strategy Alone Systems and marketing are important, but strong relationships often lead to better ideas, faster decisions, and unexpected opportunities that strategy alone cannot create. The Habits You Didn’t Mean to Bring Into Tutoring

In this episode, I reflect on how many former teachers unknowingly carry their old working habits into their tutoring business. While traits like professionalism, preparation, and responsibility are valuable, they often come with less helpful patterns such as constant availability, immediate responses, staying mentally “on,” and absorbing pressure. These habits feel normal because they were part of school life, but they can quietly shape how a tutoring business operates without any intentional choice. I also explore how teaching influences our relationship with time and energy, from defaulting to evening work to accepting tiredness as normal. I encourage you to identify one automatic habit you’ve brought with you, question whether it’s truly serving your business, and consider its hidden costs. Ultimately, this episode is about building awareness so you can start making intentional decisions about what to keep and what to change, creating a more sustainable way of working. 3 Key Takeaways: Not All Teaching Habits Serve Your Tutoring Business Some habits, like preparation and professionalism, are valuable, but others, like constant availability or absorbing pressure, may no longer support how you want to work. Awareness Comes Before Change You don’t need to fix everything at once. Simply noticing one automatic habit and questioning where it came from is a powerful first step. Every Habit Has a Hidden Cost Patterns around time, energy, and responsibility can quietly drain you. When you identify the cost, you can start choosing what truly belongs in your business moving forward. Your Tuition Business Is Allowed to Change (That’s Not Failure)

In this episode, I talk about something that doesn’t get said enough when running a tutoring business: change is not always a problem to fix. It could be a sign that your tuition business is responding to your life. I share how my own tutoring business evolved over time: from working evenings with a baby, to shifting into daytime international clients when my children were at school, to eventually building a team when doing everything myself became exhausting and unsustainable. None of these changes were failures. They were necessary adjustments to the season I was in. I also unpack why comparison can be so unhelpful. It’s easy to look at someone else’s business model and feel like you should be doing it their way, but their life circumstances, capacity, and priorities may be completely different from yours. Instead of measuring yourself against other tutors, I encourage you to get honest about your current season and what it actually requires. From there, I introduce two simple reflections: naming the season you’re in, and identifying what used to work but no longer serves you; whether that’s evening sessions, weekend work, constant availability, or trying to do everything alone. Rather than overhauling your entire tuition business, I talk about making small, intentional adaptations that bring your work back into alignment with your life. When you remove the negative self talk and start seeing change as a natural part of growth, it becomes much easier to design a tuition business that supports you, not drains you. 3 Key Takeaways: Your Tutoring Business Should Evolve With You Outgrowing a way of working doesn’t mean you’ve failed, it means your life has changed. Your tuition business is allowed to change with it. Comparison Hides Context Looking at other tuition businesses without understanding their full circumstances leads to unnecessary pressure. Your season is unique, and your tutoring business should reflect that. Small Shifts Create Sustainable Change You don’t need to rebuild everything. Start by noticing what no longer works and make small, thoughtful adjustments that better support your current capacity and priorities. Busy vs Burnout: How to Take Back Control of Your Tutoring Schedule

In this episode, I talk about something I see all the time in tutoring businesses: confusing a normal busy season with what I call “drift.” That’s when small, well-meaning yeses slowly build into a way of working you never actually chose. I share conversations I’ve had with fully booked, high-performing tutors who feel overwhelmed, even though everything on paper looks “successful.” I explain why this doesn’t mean anything is wrong, it’s often just the natural result of being someone who helps, says yes, and keeps stretching their capacity. I also reflect on my own experience growing a team and how easy it is to slip into reactive decision-making, especially with things like recruitment. From there, I introduce three simple but powerful questions I use to reset: is this pressure temporary or repeating, am I reacting or intentionally designing, and does this still align with the life and business I actually want? I bring this back to solo tutors too. Especially when it comes to late-night messages, creeping evening or weekend work, and that constant feeling of being behind on admin. Instead of overhauling everything mid-term, I encourage you to notice patterns and make small, intentional shifts that bring your business back into alignment. 3 Key Takeaways: Busy Doesn’t Always Mean Off Track Just because things feel intense doesn’t mean something has gone wrong. Sometimes you’re simply in a busy season—but the key is recognising whether it’s temporary or becoming your default. Drift Happens Through Small Yeses You don’t wake up one day with a misaligned business—it builds gradually. Extra sessions, flexible hours, and quick accommodations can quietly reshape how you work if you’re not paying attention. Ask Better Questions to Regain Control Instead of reacting to overwhelm, pause and ask: is this repeating, am I designing or scrambling, and does this match the life I want? These questions help you make grounded, intentional decisions without burning everything down.
