If you’re a fan of The Podcast Under The Stairs (and if you’re not, I highly suggest you get it in your earholes) then you’ll be aware of the TPUTS Collection and it’s amalgamation of (so far) three awesome series’: Doing The Nasty, Chronicle and Opera Omnia.
Your host, Duncan McLeish, and a myriad of co-stars/guest hosts take you on exciting journeys through horror, time and scandal.
The Doing The Nasty series is an intelligent and unbiased look into movies deemed so horrendous that not only would they affect the psyche of the common man but also apparently dogs and therefore, must be BANNED!! ...Or are they just a bit of silly nonsense? Duncan and Andy Blockley discuss each movie added to the notorious Video Nasty List with an appropriate sensibility and a touch of gallows humour. You get a clear insight to each film as well as their judgement on how offensive a movie is and whether it’s inclusion on the VNL was justified, as well as cool little sound bytes from movie intellectuals at the time. Be warned, not for the faint hearted or those of a sensitive disposition... or dogs.
The new Chronicle series has just launched its third season focusing on European Folk Horror and all it’s glory! Self-described as an ‘Almanac of Old World Horror’, each season of Chronicle looks into a particular sub genre of European Horror Cinema - previous ones including Witches and Vampires. If you’re into older and/or art house cinema, this is for you! Short and snappy, each episode only about 20 mins long, you have classics thrown in with lesser known titles with a focused look into these films, their culminations and their impacts on their audiences and wider cinema.
And lastly, the newly launched Opera Omnia series looks into various directors and systematically goes through each of their movies, discussing what works and what doesn’t with a different guest host for each director. As directors can have a varied filmography, this can divert away from horror at times but remains interesting and captivating with elements of humour and banter along the way. Season 1 focuses on the incredible British director, Ben Wheatley. Although currently only episode one is available, it was excellent to hear about Down Terrace with co-host Mr Wat-Son providing a great pairing with Duncan.
I recommend you blast through all of these as they’re bound to open your eyes to something you’ve not seen or heard of before, entertain you with witty banter and sultry Scottish accents and Duncan and his awesome band of co-hosts’ passion for horror and cinema in general will surely make for fantastic listening!
