You are the Light Shining | Swami Sarvapriyananda

"My nature is light, Nothing but light.
When the world arises I alone am shining.
When the world arises in me,
    It is just an illusion:
    Water shimmering in the sun,
A vein of silver in mother-of-pearl,
A serpent in a strand of rope."

Inspired by these verses from the Ashtavakra Gita, Swami Sarvapriyananda speaks on the nature of the Self.

    28. Mundaka Upanishad | Mantras 3.2.7 - 11 | Swami Sarvapriyananda

    28. Mundaka Upanishad | Mantras 3.2.7 - 11 | Swami Sarvapriyananda

Swami Sarvapriyananda teaches the Mundaka Upanishad which one of the major Upanishads belonging to the Atharva Veda. Mundaka means ''shaved'' like a shaved head. The teachings revealed in this Upanishad are meant to leave the student clean, or shaved of the veil of ignorance. Indeed, the study of this Upanishad has been traditionally confined to the shaven-heads, or the sannyasins, who have renounced everything and devoted themselves exclusively to contemplation. The book consists of 64 Mantras (verses) split across Mundakas (parts) and Khandas (sections) as follows:
    Mundaka 1 - Khanda 1 - 9 mantras (1.1.1 - 1.1.9)
    Mundaka 1 - Khanda 2 - 13 mantras (1.2.1 - 1.2.13)
    Mundaka 2 - Khanda 1 - 10 mantras (2.1.1 - 2.1.10)
    Mundaka 2 - Khanda 2 - 11 mantras (2.2.1 - 2.2.11)
    Mundaka 3 - Khanda 1 - 10 mantras (3.1.1 - 3.1.10)
    Mundaka 3 - Khanda 2 - 11 mantras (3.2.1 - 3.2.11)

Eye opening and life changing

I’ve been perplexed at the mystery of existence as far back as I can remember and knew there was something transcendent in life. But I live in a country where few are religious, even less are “spiritual” and most are apathetic or atheistic.

My rational mind was unable to invest in any religion or dogma, while my heart was always attracted to truth.

Seeing the impossibility of knowing god or finding anything true in religion led me to psychology, philosophy and science to find truth in a world of deception.

I’d watch and agree with 90% of the new atheists criticism of religion, Sam Harris eh al but was always left dissatisfied with straw man oversimplified arguments, closed mindedness and the gaping void that materialist paradigm causes, not to mention the arrogance that we simply know we are simply limbering robots for transferring genes, the universe is dumb, blind and meaningless and consciousness will be fully understood in a few decades.

But never did I see anyone combat this nihilism in a way that synced with reason, logic and experience. The atheists chose opponents who were mostly incapable.

Advaita Vedanta points to a reality that doesn’t conflict with science or spirituality. It helps remove anxiety, gives cause to lead a more ethical life and gives the Jnana of self realisation - removing materialistic doubt, one can lead a spiritual life without the scorn or derision of the atheistic community.

There is no need for superstition, it is not belief based, it’s direct and experience based. Materialism is superstition compared to Vedanta. I can’t express how liberating this has been for me and I’ve only listened for under a year.

Swami sarvipriananda is doing an amazing job of making this teaching so easily available and in such a thorough way.

Thank you thank you Swamiji, the teaching is sublime and your humour, patience, clarity and depth of understanding has completely changed how I see and interact with the world, I now know what I am not and what I am, simply is.
