    S5E6 with Matthew Herbert

    The world of electronic music is now a seething mass of tropes and genres that belie the innovation that made electronica so exciting in the first place. Very few acts possess the ability to truly innovate or even experiment without a commercial endgame in mind. But todays guest is a genuine maverick of the sampler. Like the Art of Noise before him, Matthew Herbert is the quintessential English eccentric who has been popping out of his mental shed every few years to cry 'EUREKA!' as yet another impossibly original production is released. A man who can make music out of anything. A man who takes great pleasure in following bizarre conceptual ideas through to a fruitful end. Like the time he recorded 3500 people biting into an apple all at once, or his award winning Horse suite which captured the eternal equine spirit perfectly. His grand ideas capture the imagination of his audience and continually push his sound in unexpected directions. He has also made dancefloor bangers and killer remixes for the likes of Moloko, Bjork, Yoko Ono, Perry Farrel and many others. His current project with drummer and vocalist Momoko Gill is another triumph of rhythm, invention and ideas.     S5E5 with Adrian Sherwood (On-U Sound)

    On today's show we welcome a legendary artist, producer and label owner who has had a pivotal role in the development of UK bass music. Adrian Sherwood is the man behind the 'On-U Sound', a label that helped popularise Reggae, Dub and Industrial music in both the UK and world wide. 'On-U Sound' brought us the likes of Dub Syndicate, African Headcharge, Gary Clail and many more as well as giving a platform to some of the greats of reggae including Mad Professor. His production and remix work has put a dubbed out spin on the likes of Sonic Boom, Halsey, Lee 'Scratch' Pery and Horace Andy. As an artist he formed groundbreaking Industrial act 'Tackhead' with Keith LeBlanc and produced Bristol punk legend Mark Stewart during his creative peak. His new album 'The collapse of everything' celebrates his relationship with LeBlanc & Stewart through bass heavy dubbed out excursions into leftfield music.     S5E4 with Budgie (Siouxsie and The Banshees)

    Our guest today is a drummer, percussionist and songwriter who cut his teeth on the St Helens cabaret circuit, at just 13 years old. However that would prove to be a world away from the groundbreaking career he would pursue in the world of Post-Punk and alternative rock. Peter Clarke is better known professionally under the name of Budgie. A self taught timekeeper, his unique style has lent itself to the likes of The Slits, The Glove, The Creatures and of course imperial phase of Siouxsie and the Banshees. Over the last 40 odd years Budgie has laid down the rhythm for alternative music and now he has written a book about his life, his journey through the music industry and most importantly his understanding of self. The Absence is much more than a rock n roll diary its an honest exploration of the factors that drove him from obscurity to fame and the very edge of control. Its an honest and unflinching look at a life that until now has only ever been glimpsed from the outside. We are delighted to welcome the musical pioneer that is Budgie to the show.     S5E3 with Richard Fearless (Death in Vegas)

    Richard Fearless is one of the UKs most enigmatic DJs and Producers and his Death in Vegas project is back with a brand new album 'Death Mask' (their 7th) on Drone Records this June. As a DJ Richard played a pivotal role in some of the countries most forward looking club nights from the infamous Job Club in the early 90s alongside the likes of Claude Young, Dave Angel and Andrew Weatherall to a stint at the controls of The Heavenly Social with the Chemical Brothers and latterly working alongside Daniel Avery at The Pickle Factory's Goo nights. His Dj style is eclectic and visceral with casual disregard for genre specifics Richard developed a gritty style which served him well in terms of setting the tone of his fantastic Death in Vegas project. From the break out success of the seminal track 'Dirge' to the uncompromising sound of the new album 'Death Mask' Richards music is always innovative and excitingly experimental.     S5E2 with Nik Fiend (Alien Sex Fiend)

    Our guest today is a maverick of music, an agent provocateur whose visually arresting image, razor sharp humour and mentally challenging music helped forge that most enduring of sub-cultures; 'Goth'. Back in the early 1980s when the post-punk counter culture embraced film noir and turned the technicolor of glam into a more sinister monochromatic look, festooned with spider webs, skulls and too much eye-liner Nik Fiend was one of the original bad-taste makers at London's The Batcave club. 'Alien Sex Fiend' along with 'The Specimen' and 'Sex Gang Children' made regular appearances at the infamous Batcave. Together they helped establish the look and feel of the early Goth scene in the south, where the likes of Nick Cave, Siouxsie & the Banshees, Bauhaus, Foetus, Robert Smith and even a freshly crimped and spiked Elizabeth Hurley were all regular attendees. The world has of course never been the same, and while music and fashion constantly evolve there is alway the reverberation of the gothic asthetic. Mr & Mrs Fiend continue to create and celebrate chaos around the world, finding success on US college radio, getting 'big in Japan' and spreading their tendrils throughout continental Europe. Uncompromising, often hilarious, always a little bit shocking Alien Sex Fiend are a national treasure who have been hidden in the basement for far too long.  Before we talk to Nik we do that thing we love to do, we talk about a completely different type of music! This month we are very pleased to speak to Alex Coles about his excellent book on Jazz Fusion. It is beautiful object and a fascinating discussion about how Jazz can be fused with all manner of musical styles and add to the overall effect. The discussion takes in Sinatra, Joni Mitchell, Charlie Mingus, Kendrick Lamar and Neneh Cherry. We also set aside a few minutes to discussing the giant hole in Deb's flat. Hosted on Acast.     S5E1 with DJ MAN POWER

    HELLO SERIES 5! Today's guest today is a DJ, producer, composer and entrepreneur, Geoff Kirkwood. Professionally known as DJ Man Power he has built a solid reputation as an eclectic producer who nimbly steps between, Disco, House and Techno whilst casually stopping off along the way for grand scale projects, such as composing for the Royal Northern Sinfonia. His reputation as a DJ has seen him selected to curate a Radio 1 essential mix and allowed him to travel the world playing in legendary spots like Glastonbury, the Panorama bar in Berlin and Burning Man Festival in the USA. But perhaps the most important and interesting thing about this journey has been the way he has taken the culmination of these experiences and invested them in his home town of North Shields. Whether it is through breathing life into an old working mans club with his regular night 'Are you affiliated' or investing in a community hub close by, where creatives can collaborate and make their art on their terms, Geoff has kept his feet firmly on the ground whilst reaching for the stars and I am very excited to welcome DJ Man Power today on What Goes Around.     S4E17 with Betty Boo

    The perfect pop star needs to have many attributes, rock solid songs, eye catching style, photogenic glamour and of course the type of personality that jumps off the page. Very few contenders manage to tick all of these boxes but when they do they make an impression on society that leaves an indelible mark. Alison Clarkson's alter ego Betty Boo had all these qualities in spades. Her music was magnetic, her style iconic and her personality projected confidence and rebellion, so much so that when the pop Svengali Chris Herbert decided to form the all conquering Spice Girls his brief was to find 5 Betty Boos. However Betty Boo was not the manufactured pop star you might expect, rather she was a determined young woman who studied audio production, wrote her own songs and fell in love with Hip-Hop at precisely the right time. After a period in the limelight Betty stepped back into the studio and continued to create music with the likes of Blur, Girls Aloud, Hear-say, Danni Minogue and Sophie Ellis-Bextor. Now back with a bang Betty Boo has a new album 'Rip up the rulebook' and her sound has matured but retains that dash of rebellious optimism that we all fell in love with back in the day.     S4E16 with Colin G Paterson

    There is an excellent film called 20 feet away from stardom that explores the world of the backing singer and how they flirt so near to the worlds of the pop megastar and yet always remain just out of camera shot, our guest today goes one better, often only a few feet away form the biggest names in show biz and yet nearly always in shot too. Colin G Paterson is the Arts & Entertainment Correspondant for the BBC and has worked as a presenter and journalist for over 20 years. From The Big Breakfast to 5Live to Glastonbury to the Oscars he has always been the man with the mic asking questions of the rich and famous and has done it all with wit and the sort of cheeky grin that gets answers.
