    S3, Ep : 55. The Spanish Dollar: The Coin That Ruled Global Trade

    You know what I love about history? Sometimes you discover something that makes you think, “Wait… how did I never know this?” So, imagine we’re having a beer together, and I tell you this: The mighty American dollar has a Spanish ancestor. Yep. Seriously. Long before the dollar became the currency we all know today, there was a Spanish coin called the Real de a Ocho, the famous Piece of Eight. And this little piece of silver was everywhere. It was minted in the Spanish Empire, using enormous quantities of silver coming from the Americas, and people were using it to buy and sell things across Europe, the Americas and Asia. In fact, it became one of the first truly international currencies. And here's the fun part: when people didn't have exactly the amount they needed, they could literally cut the coin into pieces. That's where the famous “pieces of eight” comes from. But this isn't just some curious story about an old Spanish coin. That Spanish silver helped inspire the U.S. dollar, and there are even traces of the Piece of Eight in the way American financial markets once quoted prices in eighths. And then things get even more interesting. Because behind this coin is the enormous financial machine of the Spanish Empire, the Habsburgs, the Bourbons, American silver mines, international trade… and eventually the financial world that would lead us toward modern currencies and markets. So, next time somebody tells you that the dollar is purely an American story, you might want to buy them another beer. Because there's a very Spanish story hiding behind it.     S3, Ep : 54. From Guide Dogs to Bulls: Animals in Spain

    This week on Spanish Loops, we’re talking about animals in Spain and, yes, there is a lot more to this story than cute dogs and cats. Spain has changed dramatically in the way it treats animals. What was once seen mainly as a matter of private ownership is now increasingly connected to welfare, responsibility and the law. Today, there are rules about what animals can be kept as pets, how they can be bought or sold, how they must be cared for, and what happens when an animal needs special protection. We talk about dogs, including the extraordinary work of assistance dogs trained to support blind people and people with other disabilities. These are not simply “pets with a job”: Spanish regulations now specifically recognize assistance dogs and establish standards for their training, identification and welfare. And then there is the complicated question: what animals are you actually allowed to have at home? The answer is not as simple as you might think. Spain has introduced a “positive list” approach, meaning that not every exotic or wild animal can simply become somebody’s pet. There are also increasingly strict rules surrounding the commercial sale and transfer of companion animals. And, of course, sitting in the middle of the room is the big elephant… or perhaps we should say bull. Bullfighting. Fran and I have already dedicated an entire episode to this controversial Spanish tradition, so we are not going down that road again. But we do touch on the contradiction: Spain has strengthened animal-welfare legislation while bullfighting and certain traditional bull-related events remain governed separately. It is history, culture, politics, affection for animals, personal freedom and regulation all colliding in one Spanish conversation. But what if we told you that one of the key inventions that made modern space travel possible wasn't created in the United States, or Russia, (former USSR), or anywhere you'd expect... but in Spain? Yes, you read well, Spain.   Years before the Space Race even existed, before the Cold War pushed countries to compete for space, and nearly thirtyyears before anyone dreamed of walking on the Moon, one Spanish inventor came up with an idea that sounded completely impossible at the time: a suit that could keep a person alive beyond Earth's atmosphere. It sounds like something straight out of a science fiction novel. Except... it was real. Very.   In this week's episode of Spanish Loops, Fran and I tell the story of a remarkable man who was so far ahead of his time that Europe celebrated his achievements, yet somehow history almost forgot him.
