Theory of everything: do we really need one?

The quest for a theory of everything – explaining all the forces and particles in the universe – is arguably the holy grail of physics. While each of our main theories of physics works extraordinarily well, they also clash with each other. But do we really need a theory of everything? And are we anywhere near achieving one? Will we ever have a fundamental theory of life and consciousness?

Fundamental constants: is the universe fine tuned for life to exist?

Imagine a universe with extremely strong gravity. Stars would be able to form from very little material. They would be smaller than in our universe and live for a much shorter amount of time. But could life evolve there? It after all took human life billions of years to evolve on Earth under the pleasantly warm rays from the Sun. Now imagine a universe with extremely weak gravity. Its matter would struggle to clump together to form stars, planets and – ultimately – living beings. It seems we are pretty lucky to have gravity that is just right for life in our universe. Quantum mechanics: does objective reality exist?

It is hard to shake the intuition that there's a real and objective physical world out there. If I see an umbrella on top of a shelf, I assume you do too. And if I don't look at the umbrella, I expect it to remain there as long as nobody steals it. But the theory of quantum mechanics, which governs the micro-world of atoms and particles, threatens this commonsense view. L’épisode du jour est dédié au salariat. Ce mot n’est pas particulièrement scientifique, nous le connaissons et l'utilisons régulièrement, mais il recouvre une réalité changeante, complexe, pas forcément bien comprise. Pour y voir plus clair, nous disposons fort heureusement des travaux de chercheurs, notamment de sociologues. Ainsi nous recevons Sophie Bernard, chercheuse et professeure de sociologie à l’université Paris-Dauphine, autrice de l’ouvrage Le nouvel esprit du salariat, paru en 2020 aux éditions PUF. Elle s’intéresse précisément à l’évolution des formes de rémunération des salariés pour mieux appréhender ce qu’est devenu le salariat "stable", sachant qu'en France neuf personnes en emploi sur dix sont salariées et une écrasante majorité en CDI. Dans cet épisode, nous reviendrons donc sur les observations de terrain et analyses qu'elle mène depuis des années, notamment dans les milieux professionnels de la grande distribution, du secteur bancaire et auprès des commerciaux. L'objectif est de comprendre comment le salariat devient, selon les mots de Sophie Bernard, « un foyer central de diffusion des valeurs individualistes et méritocratiques qui irriguent la société », avec au centre la figure du « travailleur autonome et responsable ». Et de s'interroger, ce changement est-il synonyme de progrès ou de régression pour les salariés, avec quelles inégalités ? Interest in the multiverse theory, suggesting that our universe is just one of many, has spiked since the movie Everything Everywhere All At Once was released.
