From Psychiatrist to Practice Owner with Dr. Duncan Gill

How psychiatrist Dr. Duncan Gill transitioned from employee to entrepreneur and built a thriving behavioral health practice serving children, teens, and families. Show Notes Page: https://www.thehowofbusiness.com/611-duncan-gill-practice-owner/ How psychiatrist Dr. Duncan Gill transitioned from employee to entrepreneur and built a thriving behavioral health practice serving children, teens, and families. Many highly trained professionals discover that technical expertise alone is not enough to build a successful business. In this episode, Henry Lopez speaks with Dr. Duncan Gill, founder of Direction Behavioral Health, about his journey from practicing psychiatrist to entrepreneur and business owner. Duncan shares how frustration with bureaucracy and a desire to serve patients differently led him to launch his own behavioral health practice. They discuss the challenges of transitioning from clinician to business leader, including hiring and managing employees, navigating partnerships, delegating responsibility, monitoring key performance indicators, and building systems that allow the business to grow beyond the founder. Duncan also shares why creativity, adaptability, and a willingness to take calculated risks have been critical to his success. He reflects on the lessons he learned from building a team, expanding facilities, and creating a practice that serves children, teens, and families while providing him with the freedom to pursue other interests, including music. This conversation offers valuable insights not only for healthcare professionals but for any entrepreneur seeking to build a business that can grow beyond their direct involvement. Healthcare professionals should not underestimate their ability to become successful entrepreneurs. Dr. Duncan Gill is a board-certified Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist and the founder of Direction Behavioral Health. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Physical Sciences from Harvard University and his Doctor of Medicine degree from Saba University School of Medicine. He completed his General Psychiatry residency and Child & Adolescent Psychiatry fellowship at the University of Connecticut. Before founding Direction Behavioral Health, Duncan served as a staff psychiatrist with the Community Council of Nashua's Child and Adolescent Program. He has also worked with Southern New Hampshire Medical Center and performed psychiatric evaluations for New Hampshire's court system. Today, he leads Direction Behavioral Health, a specialized behavioral health practice serving children, teens, young adults, and families through intensive outpatient programs and other structured mental health services. 500: I've Recorded 500 Podcast Episodes: Here's What I've Learned

Side Hustle Pro is officially 500 episodes deep, and in this milestone episode, I’m taking time to reflect on what this journey has really taught me. I share the biggest lessons I’ve learned about consistency, networking, monetization, and why the podcast itself was never the end goal, the platform was. I also talk about what I wish I knew when I started, how podcasting helped me grow as a speaker and business owner, and why playing the long game has paid off in ways I never could have planned. If you’re thinking about starting a podcast, growing a side hustle, or building something meaningful over time, this episode is a reminder that you don’t have to rush, you just have to keep going. Highlights Include 00:00 – Welcome to the 500th episode of Side Hustle Pro02:10 – Starting with what I had and recording from home04:30 – Why trying to predict the end can stop you from starting06:45 – Why the podcast was never the point, the platform was09:30 – How podcasting transformed my network12:50 – Keeping costs low and thinking like a business owner16:30 – The power of consistency and playing the long game18:45 – How podcasting improved my confidence as a speaker21:00 – Giving myself grace through different seasons of life24:45 – Final lessons I’d tell my earlier self Links Mentioned in This EpisodePodcast Moguls Group Coaching Program: https://sidehustlepro.co/podcastmogulsStart the Podcast That Builds Your Exit Plan: https://sidehustlepro.lpages.co/your-first-1000-downloads/Side Hustle Pro Website: https://sidehustlepro.co/Watch & ListenWatch this episode on YouTube and listen on all podcast platforms: Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/side-hustle-pro/id1126021323Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/13qDj08lBR4ymzGhXIKy8tYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/sidehustlepro Hosted on Acast. Cristiano Ronaldo: Football's first billionaire player

Cristiano Ronaldo grew up in poverty on the remote island of Madeira, but became football's first billionaire player, and one of the most recognisable people on the planet. BBC business editor Simon Jack and journalist Zing Tsjeng trace Ronaldo's rise from a homesick kid playing for the academy at Sporting CP, to global superstardom at Manchester United and Real Madrid, where relentless training and record-breaking performances turned him into a sporting and commercial machine. Zing and Simon explore the business of modern football: from mega transfers and billion-dollar brand deals, to tax battles and legal disputes. Ronaldo leveraged social media fame to build his CR7 empire, so is he the ultimate self-made success story, a divisive global brand, or simply the most effective monetiser of talent in sporting history? Good Bad Billionaire is the podcast that explores the lives of the super-rich and famous, tracking their wealth, philanthropy, business ethics, and success. There are leaders who made their money in Silicon Valley, on Wall Street and in high street fashion. From iconic celebrities and CEOs to titans of technology, the podcast unravels tales of fortune, power, economics, ambition and moral responsibility. Simon and Zing put their subjects to the test with a playful, totally unscientific scorecard — then hand the verdict over to you: are they good, bad, or simply billionaires? Selling a Business Roundtable

Selling a business is far more complicated than most entrepreneurs realize and many business owners wait too long to prepare for it. Show Notes Page: https://www.thehowofbusiness.com/608-selling-a-business-roundtable/ In this final episode of the three-part entrepreneurial roundtable series, Henry Lopez is joined again by Giuseppe Grammatico, Rocky Lalvani, and David Barnett to discuss what actually makes a business sellable and how business owners should think about exit planning from the very beginning. The conversation explores one of the biggest misconceptions in entrepreneurship: the belief that a small business will automatically sell for a high multiple. The panel explains why buyers care about much more than just financials, including owner dependency, systems and processes, operational documentation, and whether the business can realistically continue without the founder heavily involved. David Barnett shares insights into business valuation, buyer psychology, and deal structures, including why many sellers are surprised to learn that buyers often want seller financing, earnouts, or transition support to reduce risk. The group also discusses why most businesses listed for sale never actually sell and what separates a transferable business from a job disguised as a business. The episode also covers: • How systems and SOPs increase valuation • Why franchises often have an advantage in resale value • The hidden tax implications of selling a business • The emotional challenges of exiting a business • Why some owners should focus on maximizing income instead of pursuing a sale Whether you're years away from an exit or just starting your entrepreneurial journey, this conversation will help you think differently about building a business with long-term value. This episode is hosted by Henry Lopez. The How of Business podcast focuses on helping you start, run, grow and exit your small business. 518: The ONE skill you need to learn before you QUIT

If this resonated with you, here are additional resources: ⭐ APPLY TO SHIFT: https://sidehustlepro.co/shift In this solo episode, I am getting real with you about the one skill that changed everything for me and that I believe every woman needs to develop right now: learning how to make money directly for yourself. I am sharing why the leap from employee to entrepreneur is so hard, how our entire lives have programmed us to earn money for someone else, and what it truly takes to start creating money on your own terms. I take you back to my days at NPR, where I was climbing the ladder, playing the game, and quietly building Side Hustle Pro on the side. I share how a hater coworker who reported me to my boss became the catalyst for my exit plan, how I landed my first $4,000 podcast sponsorship from a cold customer service email, and how learning just two revenue streams gave me the confidence to leave my job for good. This episode is also a reminder that you do not have to have everything figured out before you start. Your first $20 or $25 outside of your paycheck changes something in you that no amount of planning can replicate. If you are sitting at a crossroads wondering what your next move is, this episode is your sign to start choosing yourself. Main TakeawaysThe difficulty of leaving a job is not fear or lack of risk tolerance; it is decades of programming to earn money for someone else, and that programming can be unlearned.Earning money depends on someone else choosing you, while creating money is about identifying a problem, building a solution, and offering it to the world. You do not need two revenue streams mastered before you act; your first dollar outside a paycheck unlocks a shift in confidence and mindset that no amount of planning can give you.Showing up imperfectly is part of the process; authenticity attracts the right people and gives your audience permission to let their guard down too. Highlights Include00:01 - Why I chose to record this episode on the go with ease over perfection02:27 - How jobs program us to earn money for someone else and why that makes the leap so hard03:06 - The story of bringing my now-husband Muoyo to my NPR holiday party and what it revealed about being stuck in the corporate mindset07:31 - Why smart, experienced, degreed women still feel stuck and what they are actually missing09:49 - The difference between earning money (someone choosing you) and creating money (creating value)12:15 - Why showing up imperfectly is how you attract your people, especially as Black women in professional spaces14:37 - Why relying on someone else to choose you is bad for your mental health, and what to do instead18:47 - My personal backstory: launching Side Hustle Pro while at NPR and investing $1,197 in a sponsorship intensive21:06 - How a cold email to a customer service inbox landed me my first $4,000 podcast sponsorship contract25:52 - The coworker who reported me to HR and how that moment became the push I needed to start my exit plan00:00 (Part 2) - Why your first $25 changes everything internally and how making money directly for yourself is the skill to build right now Links Mentioned in This EpisodeShift Coaching Program: sidehustlepro.co/shift Watch & ListenListen to Side Hustle Pro on Apple Podcasts: podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/side-hustle-pro/id1126021323 Listen on Spotify: open.spotify.com/show/13qDj08lBR4ymzGhXIKy8t AnnouncementsSHIFT, my transformational coaching program for ambitious women who want to turn their side hustle into their exit plan from their 9-to-5, is now open for applications. How Elon Musk Thinks About AI, Wealth, and Multiplanetary Life | Eric Jorgenson

What if everything you think you know about success is wrong? What if the biggest risks aren't reckless, they're required? And what if the person everyone loves to hate is actually the one we should all be studying? Eric Jorgenson spent five years studying Elon Musk and distilled everything into his new book, The Book of Elon.
