A.I. Backlash Turns Violent + Kara Swisher on Healthmaxxing + The Zuck Bot Is Coming

This week, amid violent attacks on the homes of the OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman and the Indianapolis councilman Ron Gibson, we debate why artificial intelligence and data centers are so unpopular. Then, Kara Swisher returns to the show to discuss her new docuseries on Silicon Valley’s obsession with living longer. And finally, can chief executives replace themselves with A.I.? Mark Zuckerberg seems to be trying. Tarjeteros

In the streets of the Dominican Republic, a new economy thrives in the shadows. It’s built not on tourism or sugar, but on stolen data. They call them tarjeteros. And they are making a lot of money from stolen credit cards. This is a story about one group of tarjeteros who came to the US, and let loose on New York city. • Is your iPhone about to change forever?

    6

Is your iPhone about to change forever?

Tim Cook resigns: what does a new Apple boss mean for your smartphone? Apple CEO Tim Cook is stepping down later this year, with John Ternus — a long‑time hardware leader — named as his successor. We look past the boardroom drama and asks what this means for the thing most of us hold all day: your phone. Apple’s design choices set the tone for the entire industry; when Apple shifts, everyone else tends to follow. And if the next era is led by a hardware engineer, does that point to a different kind of iPhone future — in how it looks, behaves, and what Apple chooses to prioritise (or drop)? Also this week: Geese — psyop or marketing? A band called Geese seemed to come out of nowhere - and now they’re playing Coachella. But alongside their rise, a bigger question has caught fire: how much of what we think is “organic” online is actually engineered? A WIRED report digs into “trend simulation”: networks of accounts, seeded clips and manufactured discourse designed to push an artist up the algorithmic ladder. None of this is entirely new - the music industry has always shaped what we hear - but the machinery is now quieter, faster, and harder to spot. And that changes the emotional core of fandom: when something breaks through, we don’t just ask “is this good?” — we ask “did I choose this… or was it chosen for me?” Maine becomes the first state to ban data centres Maine lawmakers have approved what’s being described as the first statewide pause on large data centres - driven by fears over electricity demand, rising bills, water use and environmental strain. This isn’t just a Maine story. Across the US, analysts are already warning that a huge chunk of planned data‑centre capacity for 2026 is being delayed or cancelled - not only because of local pushback, but because power, transformers and other basic electrical kit are becoming the bottleneck. At the same time, cracks are showing in the AI boom’s confidence game: OpenAI has shut down its standalone Sora video app, citing a wind‑down timeline, after reports that the economics and compute costs didn’t add up. And in one of the most surreal signs of the hype cycle, Allbirds has announced it’s selling off its shoe business and rebranding as an “AI compute infrastructure” company. So Karen asks the question beneath the headlines: are we looking at normal growing pains — or early signs that the AI bubble is hitting real limits: energy, hardware, planning, and public consent? The Interface is your weekly guide to the tech rewiring your week and our world. Hosted by journalists Thomas Germain, Karen Hao, and Nicky Woolf, each episode unpacks, week by week, how technology is shaping all our futures. No guests. No jargon. Just three sharp voices debating the stories that matter — whether they shook a government, broke the internet, or quietly tipped the balance of power. Jensen Huang – TPU competition, why we should sell chips to China, & Nvidia’s supply chain moat

I asked Jensen about TPU competition, Nvidia’s lock on the ever more bottlenecked supply chain needed to make advanced chips, whether we should be selling AI chips to China, why Nvidia doesn’t just become a hyperscaler, how it makes its investments, and much more. Enjoy! Watch on YouTube; read the transcript. Sponsors * Crusoe’s cloud runs on state-of-the-art Blackwell GPUs, with Vera Rubin deployment scheduled for later this year. But hardware is only part of the story—for inference, Crusoe’s MemoryAlloy tech implements a cluster-wide KV cache, delivering up to 10x faster TTFT and 5x better throughput than vLLM. Learn more at crusoe.ai/dwarkesh * Cursor helped me build an AI co-researcher over the course of a weekend. Now I have an AI agent that I can collaborate with in Google Docs via inline comment threads! You can try my co-researcher out at github.com/dwarkeshsp/ai_coworker, or get started on your own Cursor project today at cursor.com/dwarkesh * Jane Street spent ~20,000 GPU hours training backdoors into 3 different language models, then challenged my audience to find the triggers. They received some clever solutions—like comparing the base and fine-tuned versions and extrapolating any differences to reveal the hidden backdoor—but no one was able to solve all 3. How Anthropic’s product team moves faster than anyone else | Cat Wu (Head of Product, Claude Code)

Cat Wu is Head of Product for Claude Code and Cowork at Anthropic, building one of the most important AI products of this generation. Before joining Anthropic, Cat spent years as an engineer and briefly worked in VC. Today, she’s interviewing hundreds of product managers who are trying to break into AI—and seeing firsthand what separates those who thrive from those who fall behind. We discuss: 1. How Anthropic’s shipping cadence went from months to weeks to days 2. The emerging skills PMs need to develop right now 3. Why you need to build products that don’t yet fully work, so you’re ready when the next model closes the gap 4. Cat’s most underrated AI skill: asking the model to introspect on its own mistakes 5. Why Claude’s personality is core to its success 6. Why Anthropic’s mission alignment eliminates the friction that slows most large organizations 7.
