Whatever Happened To Here Comes Honey Boo Boo?

In 2012, a six-year-old beauty pageant contestant named Alana "Honey Boo Boo" Thompson became America's most controversial reality TV star, thanks to her 'Go-Go Juice' and brilliant catchphrases like "A dollar makes me HOLLAR (Honey Boo Boo Child)!" What started as an appearance on TLC's Toddlers & Tiaras turned into the phenomenon reality show Here Comes Honey Boo Boo, following Alana's entire family in rural Georgia - including Mama June Shannon, Sugar Bear, Chickadee, Chubbs and Pumpkin. But behind the viral memes and record-breaking ratings was a dark story of family dysfunction, drug addiction, and financial abuse. The show was abruptly canceled in 2014 amid major family scandals that shocked America. Now in her twenties, Alana Thompson has narrated a revealing 2025 Lifetime movie called 'I Was Honey Boo Boo', exposing the disturbing truth about what really happened behind the cameras - and where everyone in the infamous Honey Boo Boo family has ended up today. CW: This episode includes some brief discussion (without any detail) of sexual abuse.  We give you Just The Gist, but if you want more, there's this: This article from The Hollywood Reporter Here Comes Honey Boo Boo review from The A.V. JTG MINI: Balloon Boy (Rosie's Version)

On October 15, 2009, the world watched in horror as a homemade helium balloon shaped like a flying saucer drifted across Colorado skies with six-year-old Falcon Heene allegedly trapped inside. The "Balloon Boy" saga captivated millions for hours until the balloon landed empty and Falcon was found hiding in his family's attic. But when little Falcon told CNN "we did this for the show," the story took a dramatic turn. What followed was a media frenzy, criminal charges, and years of debate about whether the Heenes staged the whole thing as a publicity stunt or if it was a genuine accident that spiraled out of control. The Woman Who Fell In Love With A Dolphin (Rosie's Version)

In the 1960s, Margaret Howe Lovatt became part of a NASA-funded experiment to teach a dolphin named Peter to speak English. What started as groundbreaking interspecies communication research quickly turned into something much more controversial when Margaret moved into a flooded house to live with Peter 24/7 for six months. JTG MINI: The OceanGate Titan Disaster

On June 18th, 2023, the OceanGate Titan submersible imploded during a dive to the Titanic wreck, instantly killing all five people on board including CEO Stockton Rush. But this wasn't a freak accident - it was the predictable result of years of ignored safety warnings, with over 30 deep-sea experts telling Rush his experimental carbon fiber design would kill people. The four-day international rescue mission captivated the world, but the violent implosion had scattered the death trap submarine across the ocean floor in milliseconds. BREAKIN' NOOZ: Simon Patterson launching his own podcast? HOOK IT TO OUR VEINS.

Breakin' Nooz is back bébé! Episodes drop every Tuesday for subscribers to The Gistener Club bonus content, which you can access via the Just The Gist Patreon or through Apple Subscriptions!  This week: - Secret Lives of Mormon Wives star Taylor Frankie Paul is the new Bachelorette and while yes, it will be unhinged chaos, we surprised ourselves with all our very earnest thoughts about it. (AND OKAY FINE ROSIE TALKS ABOUT MAYBE POSSIBLY RECAPPING IT.) - Rosie has a confession for James and that confession is Thermomix-shaped. - Mushroom Lady Erin Patterson's ex-husband Simon Patterson has apparently turned down BIG potential $$ to do an interview with a major network and instead has decided to... LAUNCH HIS OWN PODCAST AS PART OF HIS VERY OWN PODCAST PRODUCTION COMPANY THAT WILL FOCUS ON TELLING THE STORIES OF SURVIVORS. And Rosie is convinced a love story is at the heart of what will no doubt become a true crime media empire. (Also... thoughts on what the production company will be called?) - Speaking of death cap mushroom murders, the first ep of Stan's new mushroom murder doco dropped on the weekend and it has actual interviews with people from Erin's past and is defo worth a watch. Check out the trailer for 'Revealed: Death Cap Murders' at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C4FBlQbgYYM - A FYRE FEST MUSICAL IS HAPPENING! And Taika Waititi is producing, so it will absolutely bring the goods. Also, Billy McFarland has launched a new business and Rosie spent 40 minutes on the website trying to decipher what it actually is. - A new crime drama about The Murdaugh Murders is coming soon to Disney+ and it looks AWESOME. Check out the trailer at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ARUjuqwA-98. (Thank the television GODS that the US off-season is over and we FINALLY have some stuff to watch.) - There is yet another thing that the KidZ are saying Millennials do that is unbearably cringe but Rosie simply cannot give this one up. Read the article about it by Eleanor Wicklund at https://www.news.com.au/lifestyle/real-life/news-life/youll-have-to-pry-this-texting-habit-out-of-my-millennial-hands-lol/news-story/bde24cc40e4282ee40630b6b25551944 OUR RECCOS! The 'Disappearance' of Sherri Papini (Rosie's Version)

In November 2016, California mother Sherri Papini vanished while jogging, sparking a massive search effort and national media frenzy. When she was found 22 days later on Thanksgiving Day, chained and emaciated on the side of a freeway, she claimed 'two Hispanic women' had kidnapped her for sex trafficking. But in 2022, the FBI arrested Sherri for faking her own kidnapping - revealing she'd actually been hiding at her ex-boyfriend's apartment, asking him to hurt her to make the injuries look real. Sherri was released from prison in 2023, after serving 10 months of her 18-month sentence. And in 2025, she (of course) started doing the media rounds, because she had a LOT to say. (Content Warning: This episode contains discussions of domestic violence and abuse.) We give you Just The Gist, but if you want more, there's this: ABC News report - Sherri Papini claims boyfriend abducted her in 2016 hoax kidnapping (2025) Sherri Papini kidnapping hoax Wikipedia page - Complete timeline and case details Perfect Wife documentary - Keith Papini's side of the story (2024) Sherri Papini: Caught In The Lie documentary - Sherri's version of events (2025) Sherri Papini on the Viall Files - Sherri tells her story (2025) People Magazine coverage - Where is Keith Papini now (2024) Daily Mail report - Sherri Papini's husband demands sole custody (2022) 7News analysis - Sherri Papini's theatrics are what got her caught (2022) True Crime Daily podcast episode - Sherri Papini busted: California mom's kidnapping fake (2022) If you need support, please contact:  Lifeline: https://www.lifeline.org.au/  1800 RESPECT (domestic violence support): https://1800respect.org.au/ --- Just The Gist is a Just The Network production. BREAKIN' NOOZ: Free access this week!

Haven't gistened to Breakin' Nooz yet? It's usually only available by joining the Gistener Club through Patreon or Apple Subscriptions, but this week we thought we'd give y'all a free lil taste test! Gistening to Rosie deliver the week's most important Breakin' Nooz headlines in this episode is Just The Network producer/professional Gistener Kate Leaver (and JTN assistant Pocket). This week: WE RECORDED THIS LITERALLY TEN MINUTES AFTER ROSIE AND JAMES LIVE STREAMED THE MUSHROOM LADY VERDICT WITH ROSIE IN A TOWEL. So there's much Erin Patterson chat to be had, including our thoughts on the non-parole period of 33 years. It wasn't planned but we have a brief chat about the guy in New Zealand (Tom Phillips) who had been on the run and hiding with his kids in the wilderness since 2021. He was caught and killed yesterday and by last night it was thankfully confirmed all three kids were safe and well. Kate mentions the amazing new Australian book 'Conspiracy Nation' by Ariel Bogel and Cam Wilson and we chat about what might lead to people falling down such dangerous and ultimately fatal rabbit holes. (Rosie also mentions 'Cultish' by Amanda Montell.) Omg omg omg omg OF COURSE we talk about the nutso new Netflix documentary that it seems everybody has watched: 'Unknown Number: The High School Catfish' (watch the trailer here). Rosie and James may have been the only people on earth who managed to see it without knowing the CRAZY TWIST. Lots of chats about toxic mothers and the many speculated theories floating around, including the fascinating 'Munchausen's by Internet'. Kendra on TikTok fell in love with her psychiatrist. Her series of detailed videos about it went crazy viral and had millions hooked. But it was pretty clear, pretty quickly, that Kendra was not in a good place, and what we initially started consuming as 'content' was actually quite likely a person's mental breakdown in real time. But she's monetised the videos, and as they are seen by more people, she's posting more and more of them. So how did we get to a place where the lines of 'entertainment' and 'content' are so blurred? (Listen to the episode of ICYMI podcast about this that Rosie mentioned right here.) HOT CHEF UPDATE: is the Hot Chef thing real? Or just a (genius, tbh) marketing ploy by debut author Katheryn Wella Bogen to make her new book 'Queering Him' go viral? Hmmmm. Kate Leaver wrote a brilliant article about the soemtimes embarrassing lengths she has gone to (and crazy stuff she has believed) in the midst of a long-term illness. Read 'Long Covid has more than 200 symptoms. Selective gullibility is one of mine' at The Guardian right here. .... BREAKIN’ NOOZ is a Just The Network production. Titanic (Rosie’s Version)

On April 14, 1912, the RMS Titanic - the largest, most luxurious ship ever built - struck an iceberg and sank on its maiden voyage. Over 1,500 people died in what became one of history's most famous disasters. This is Just The Gist of how an "unsinkable" ship designed with revolutionary safety features became a death trap, how the crew's lack of training turned evacuation into chaos, and how a nearby ship that could have saved everyone just... didn't.
