Understanding the Role of a CISO

In this episode of Life of a CISO, Dr. Eric Cole explains why world-class CISOs must think like chief officers—not technicians. Drawing from boardroom experience and real-world cyber events, he breaks down the three threats executives are most concerned about heading into 2026: ransomware, cloud failures, and AI. Dr. Cole unpacks why the Land Rover Jaguar ransomware attack marked a turning point in cybersecurity, showing how a single breach can impact an entire national economy. He also highlights the growing over-reliance on cloud providers, referencing major AWS and Microsoft outages, and warns that organizations are rolling out AI without understanding data leakage, hallucinations, or business risk. At the core of the discussion is a powerful, concise definition of cybersecurity—and why most organizations still get it wrong. Dr. Cole explains why not knowing your critical data is the root cause behind ransomware exposure, cloud outages, and reckless AI adoption. He closes with what he believes should be the #1 cybersecurity priority for 2026: a complete data and asset inventory. This episode is a must-watch for CISOs, executives, and board members who want clarity, credibility, and control in an increasingly risky digital world.

Will inference move to the edge?

Today virtually all AI compute takes place in centralized data centers, driving the demand for massive power infrastructure. But as workloads shift from training to inference, and AI applications become more latency-sensitive (autonomous vehicles, anyone?), there‘s another pathway: migrating a portion of inference from centralized computing to the edge. Instead of a gigawatt-scale data center in a remote location, we might see a fleet of smaller data centers clustered around an urban core. Some inference might even shift to our devices.  So how likely is a shift like this, and what would need to happen for it to substantially reshape AI power? In this episode, Shayle talks to Dr. Ben Lee, a professor of electrical engineering and computer science at the University of Pennsylvania, as well as a visiting researcher at Google. Shayle and Ben cover topics like: The three main categories of compute: hyperscale, edge, and on-device Why training is unlikely to move from hyperscale The low latency demands of new applications like autonomous vehicles How generative AI is training us to tolerate longer latencies  Why distributed inference doesn‘t face the same technical challenges as distributed training Why consumer devices may limit model capability  Resources: ACM SIGMETRICS Performance Evaluation Review: A Case Study of Environmental Footprints for Generative AI Inference: Cloud versus Edge Internet of Things and Cyber-Physical Systems: Edge AI: A survey Credits: Hosted by Shayle Kann. #487 – Irving Finkel: Deciphering Secrets of Ancient Civilizations & Flood Myths

Irving Finkel is a scholar of ancient languages and a longtime curator at the British Museum, renowned for his expertise in Mesopotamian history and cuneiform writing. He specializes in reading and interpreting cuneiform inscriptions, including tablets from Sumerian, Akkadian, Babylonian, and Assyrian contexts. He became widely known for studying a tablet with a Mesopotamian flood story that predates the biblical Noah narrative, which he presented in his book “The Ark Before Noah” and in a documentary that involved building a circular ark based on the tablet’s technical instructions. Sage Geosystems' bet on underground energy storage

About 90% of global energy storage is pumped storage hydropower – which requires a mountain, a lake, and a whole lot of permitting. While lithium batteries have gotten drastically cheaper over the last decade, they’re still expensive for longer durations.   But Cindy Taff and her team at Sage Geosystems are developing geothermal technology that could revolutionize energy storage. Instead of pumping water up a mountain, they pump it deep into the earth, providing cost-effective, long-term storage for intermittent renewable sources. They’re piloting this technology at a new commercial facility in partnership with  San Miguel Electric Cooperative, a rural Texas electric cooperative that is transitioning from coal to solar and battery storage thanks to a USDA grant.   In this episode, Lara Pierpoint talks with Cindy Taff, CEO of Sage Geosystems about its groundbreaking new technology, their first commercial facility, and upcoming partnerships with geothermal giant Ormat Technologies.  Hosted by Lara Pierpoint. Inside Microsoft’s plan to remove 50 years of carbon emissions

In 2020, Microsoft announced a major goal: by 2050 the company aims to remove from the atmosphere all the carbon emissions it has produced since its founding in 1975.  When Phil Goodman joined the company in 2022, he quickly found that the market for Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) was just getting off the ground. That meant that in order to meet its climate pledge, Microsoft needed to help foster the carbon removal market.  In this episode, Lara Pierpoint talks with Phil Goodman, director of Microsoft’s carbon removal portfolio, about what it takes to structure offtake agreements for CDR, the challenges of fostering an emerging market, and some of the company’s most promising CDR partnerships.  Hosted by Lara Pierpoint.
