Into the Woods, From Chestnut Genetics To Tiny Forests

American chestnut trees once towered over the landscape, dominating forests in parts of the eastern United States. But in the late 1800s, a fungal blight virtually wiped them out across the country. Chestnut restoration scientist Jared Westbrook tells Host Ira Flatow how new genetic work could speed up efforts to breed fungal resistance into hybrid chestnuts and create a heartier chestnut population.  Then, author Hanna Lewis introduces Ira to the concept of miniforests, self-sustaining native forest ecosystems on a tiny footprint, like an empty lot or a schoolyard. The planting method, developed by botanist Akira Miyawaki, can help “rewild” small parcels of land by jump-starting forest development. Read our full story, The Miniforest Movement Gains Ground In The U.S. Guests: Dr. Jared Westbrook is Director of Science for the American Chestnut Foundation in Asheville, North Carolina. Hanna Lewis is the author of the book Mini-Forest Revolution: Using the Miyawaki Method to Rapidly Rewild the World. She works for non-profit Renewing the Countryside in Minneapolis, Minnesota.Transcripts for each episode are available within 1-3 days at sciencefriday.com. Subscribe to this podcast. The Life Scientific: Julia Simner

Imagine if you were listening to an opera or a Taylor Swift concert, and as the lights in the auditorium dimmed, the music was accompanied by a rainbow of colours only you could see. Perhaps while listening to your friends talking, you simultaneously experience a smorgasbord of tastes, with different words evoking different flavours, maybe a delicious ice cream, or something as disgusting as ear wax... This merging of the senses is known as synaesthesia, and it’s the rich research world of neuropsychologist Professor Julia Simner. Julia runs the Multisense lab at the University of Sussex and has pioneered research into understanding how special brains process our sensory world in special ways. In the studio she tests Jim to see if he might be a synaesthete or have aphantasia, which is the inability to view images in the mind’s eye. The results are surprising. Julia’s discovered links to autism, and to different personality types, as well as a number of previously unknown sensory differences. She describes her career and her life as a series of swerves, or sliding door moments, that have led her to study the subject and the people she’s passionate about. She says that the more she looks for these unusual traits in us the more she finds.

Why You're Smarter Than You Think

From the time we're schoolchildren, we're ranked and sorted based on how smart we are. But what if our assumptions about intelligence limit our potential? This week, we revisit a favorite 2022 conversation with cognitive scientist Scott Barry Kaufman, who proposes a more expansive notion of what it means to be "smart." Then, in the latest installment of Your Questions Answered, psychologist James Cordova answers listener questions on accepting our romantic partners as they are. Our next stops on Hidden Brain’s live tour are just weeks away! Join Shankar for an evening of science and storytelling in Philadelphia on March 21 or New York City on March 25. He’ll be sharing seven key psychological insights from his first decade hosting the show. And stayed tuned for more tour stops to be announced later this spring! If you missed our original series with James Cordova, listen to How to Fix Your Marriage, Part 1 and How to Fix Your Marriage, Part 2.  Episode illustration by ghariza mahavira for Unsplash+ Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Do You Feel Invisible?

What does it do to a person to feel overlooked? This week, psychologist Gordon Flett examines how the absence of “mattering” can fuel loneliness, depression, and even violence. He outlines how feeling valued serves as a psychological buffer, and how simple gestures can rebuild a sense of meaning in ourselves and others. Then, in the second half of the show, listeners share their thoughts on finding healing in nature. Psychologist Marc Berman returns for the latest installment of our series "Your Questions Answered."  Today's episode touches on topics related to loneliness, depression, and suicide. If you or someone you love is struggling, there are people who can help. If you're in the U.S., call or text the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at 988. If you're outside the U.S., this site can help you find mental health resources in your country. Our next stops on Hidden Brain’s live tour are just weeks away! Join Shankar for an evening of science and storytelling in Philadelphia on March 21 or New York City on March 25. EPA Rescinds The Legal Basis For Regulating Greenhouse Gases

On February 12, the Environmental Protection Agency dealt a major blow to the government’s power to fight climate change by rescinding a key piece of research called the endangerment finding. The finding, issued in 2009, basically says: Greenhouse gas emissions endanger public health and welfare—and because they’re harmful, they must be regulated. It's the legal basis for the federal government’s regulation of greenhouse gases under the Clean Air Act. So what does it mean that this finding has been thrown out? Host Flora Lichtman digs into this question with Andy Miller, an original author on the endangerment finding who spent more than 30 years working for the EPA. Guest: Dr. Andy Miller worked on air pollution and climate change at the EPA for more than 30 years. He was an original author on Endangerment Finding. Why Aren’t There Biomarkers For Mental Illness?

Despite major advances in our understanding of the biology of mental health disorders,  there’s no blood test or brain scan that will confirm if you have depression, anxiety, PTSD, or any other psychiatric illness.  And yet, the American Psychiatric Association recently announced that it will be including biomarkers for mental conditions in the next edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), which guides diagnosis and treatment of mental illness. So how close are we to pinpointing the biological markers of mental illness, and what does that mean for diagnosis? It’s complicated.  Host Flora Lichtman untangles some of this science with psychiatry researcher John Krystal. Guest: Dr. John Krystal is a professor of psychiatry, neuroscience, and psychology at the Yale School of Medicine. Transcripts for each episode are available within 1-3 days at sciencefriday.com. The serious hunt for alien life

Bring up aliens and a lot of people will scoff. But not everyone is laughing. Around the turn of the century, 3.8 million people banded together in a real-time search for aliens -- with screensavers. It was a big moment in a century-long concerted search for extraterrestrial intelligence. So far, alien life hasn't been found. But for scientists like astronomer Janes Davenport, that doesn't mean the hunt is worthless. It doesn't mean we should give up. No, according to James, the search is only getting more exciting as new technology opens up a whole new landscape of possibilities. So today, we're revisiting our episode on the evolving hunt for alien life.  Want more space content? A UFO Too Big To Move: The South Korea Theory Examined

A UFO so large it could not be transported. That was the claim made by investigative journalist Ross Coulthart in 2023. According to the story, a structure was built over the craft because it was simply too big to move, and the location was said to be outside of the United States. Since then, speculation has ranged from Pine Gap in Australia to secure facilities in Nevada and Europe. More recently, attention has focused on a specific site in South Korea. In this episode, Andy revisits the origins of the Too Big To Move claim and outlines the criteria such a site would need to meet, including long term security, government control, and the infrastructure to sustain secrecy. Researcher Ryan Purkey joins the show to examine the geography, tunnel systems, military presence, and scientific facilities that have brought renewed focus to the location near Anyang. Is this a credible investigative lead, or another case of speculation attaching itself to a secure installation? We break down what can be tested and what remains unverified. 🔥 Support the show & get bonus content: 🛸 YouTube Memberships: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCHw9Lru3EcpRQyM7AI5TlmA/join 🛸 Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/c/ThatUFOPodcast 🛸 Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/that-ufo-podcast/id1511121397 🛸 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/7wnXUAQ3vwdsX1BoyaEvjZ 🛸 Buy Me a Coffee: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/ThatUFOPodcast 📲 Connect with the show: Twitter: @UFOUAPAM Facebook, Instagram & YouTube: That UFO Podcast YouTube: YouTube.com/c/ThatUFOPodcast Email: UFOUAPAM@gmail.com All links: https://linktr.ee/ufouapam Official Website: ThatUFOPodcast.com 👍 Don’t forget to subscribe, like & leave a review — it really helps!
