    Ailene Tisser - Autism Month

Send us Fan Mail In this episode of Navigating Neva, we’re talking about autism, water safety, and sensory needs. Water safety education often focuses on rules: don’t go near the water, wait for an adult, stay away from the pool. But for some autistic children, water is more than a place to swim. It can be calming, regulating, exciting, or deeply sensory. This conversation explores why water may be so appealing, what traditional safety messages often miss, and how families, swim instructors, and aquatic professionals can build safer, more effective approaches. We cover:  Why water can provide powerful sensory input through pressure, sound, temperature, and movement  Why “don’t go near the water” is not enough  How elopement, sensory seeking, stress, excitement, and communication differences affect safety  Sensory strategies that support learning, including visual supports, predictable routines, first/then language, gradual entry, and clear exit routines  Why autistic swimmers may need repetitive, body-based learning instead of rule-only instruction  Practical takeaways for parents, caregivers, swim instructors, and aquatic teams This episode is not about fear. It is about understanding. When we understand why a child is drawn to water, we can create better safety plans, better lessons, and better support systems. Selena Willows Week 4

Send us Fan Mail In this fourth conversation with Selena Willows, we dig into one of the most talked-about parts of my teaching approach: the 100 Minute Model. We unpack why this timeline works, why I choose short, focused sessions, and what makes an intensive format effective for real learning instead of rushed performance. We also talk about the role parents play in the process, how I work with them to support better outcomes, and why parent involvement matters more than most people realize. This episode also takes on a bigger question—what “guaranteed results” actually mean, what I do mean when I say that, and what I do not mean. This is an honest conversation about structure, expectations, learning, trust, and the difference between promising a transformation versus creating the conditions for one. If you have ever wondered how lesson length, frequency, parent communication, and outcomes all fit together, this episode will give you a deeper look inside my framework. Selena Willows Week 3

Send us Fan Mail In this episode of Navigating Neva, Nicole with Selena unpack one of the most common parenting questions in aquatics: do children really need goggles, floaties, puddle jumpers, or other swim equipment to learn and feel safe in the water? This is not a shame-based conversation, and it is not about telling parents they are wrong. It is about helping families understand the tradeoffs. Nicole and Selena break down why so many parents rely on equipment, what can happen when children become dependent on it, and how to begin moving away from that dependence in a way that supports real confidence, comfort, and water safety. Together, they discuss the difference between equipment used for true safety and equipment that may change how a child learns to move in the water. They also explore how to reduce anxiety for both children and parents while building stronger, more independent swimmers. If you have ever wondered whether swim gear is helping, hindering, or simply being misunderstood, this episode is for you. https://www.linkedin.com/in/selena-grinham-willows https://www.instagram.com/swimtosafetybyselena https://www.swimtosafety.com Support the show 🔴 Follow Your Host on TikTok: Stay connected and see behind-the-scenes content by following me on TikTok at @NicoleFairfield. 💬 Find Wesley King on Facebook: Get expert insights and connect with Wesley at Wesley King Consulting on Facebook. ❓ Got Questions?: Have questions about today’s episode or upcoming topics?
