    The national ID nobody voted for

    This video is about how a government sign-in page can become a national identity system. Twenty-five years after the United States rejected a centralized national ID, the federal government is moving hundreds of public services onto Login.gov. Behind the familiar login screen is a growing identity infrastructure capable of connecting government records, verifying people who are not present, labeling accounts for suspected fraud, tracking browsers, and deciding who gets through the door. I followed Greg Hogan from the system Elon Musk used to reach two million federal employees, through his testimony over DOGE’s access to federal personnel records, and into his new role expanding Login.gov toward what officials have called a “globally recognized identity platform.” I also went through Login.gov’s code, federal directives, procurement records, court findings, and an unexplained increase from 100 million to 180 million accounts. What emerges is not one dramatic announcement, but a national identity system being assembled one agency, contractor, software switch, and fraud-prevention measure at a time.     The Charlie Kirk Data Machine

    This video is about how a public crisis can become a data asset. A politically charged shooting can generate thousands of videos, photos, identities, locations, witness accounts, and movement records. Those materials can feed the systems that turn people into searchable patterns: faces, trajectories, associations, vehicles, accounts, organizations, and networks.     The medical center under Trump’s ballroom

    Twenty-four hours before the White House announced Trump’s ballroom, the administration gathered more than sixty healthcare and technology companies to begin building a new national health-data system. A year later, Trump says the ballroom sits over an integrated military complex containing a hospital and medical facilities. The Supreme Court has allowed construction to continue while it considers the case. I went through the court filings, architectural drawings, CMS code, and Trump’s own statements to understand what they are building, how they are paying for it, and what Congress can still do.     We need to talk about Tucker

    Seven people had dinner in a cabin in Maine and announced a movement for the forgotten American. The cabin belongs to the man at the head of the table — so does the network the manifesto aired on, the survival store advertised during it, and the gold company with his name on the paperwork. His own lawyers won a case by arguing no reasonable viewer takes him at his word. I took his lawyers at their word and spent a week checking everyone else at the table too.Some of them read real. That's what makes it worth twenty minutes.     Three sovereign wealth funds are buying thirty-eight and a half percent of the new Warner Brothers Paramount, one of them chaired by the man American intelligence concluded ordered the murder of a Washington Post columnist. But don't worry, they promised not to touch the newsrooms. The promise covers the broadcast stations and CBS News. I searched the entire FCC petition for the words Cable News Network and got zero results, because CNN is cable, cable has no license, and a license is the only thing Washington can take away.Every piece of work you would have to finish before selling a news network is finished. Everyone responsible says nothing has been decided.     the true cost of Trump Accounts

    The Treasury Department has handed the account of every newborn in America to Robinhood, a stock-trading app carrying the largest fine in the history of its own regulator. But hey, it's free to use! The account opens the day your child is born, seeded with a thousand dollars of federal money, and to open it a parent hands over a biometric faceprint that Robinhood keeps forever, processed by an outside vendor named Persona whose entire government dashboard was found sitting on a public server this February, running 269 checks and filing secret reports to the Treasury's financial-crimes unit. The savings account seems to be the wrapper for a permanent data file on your child. And the government is already working with hospitals to open one automatically for every baby, before a single form is signed.
