Jill Scott, Seal, Jordan Davis and Infinity Song performed before severe storms forced an evacuation and lengthy delay. Those who stayed were rewarded after midnight with a rousing Roots-led showcase featuring Kathy Sledge, State Property, Meek Mill, DJ Jazzy Jeff and Will Smith, who closed with “Summertime” before dazzling fireworks. Still, punishing heat, canceled events, the weather disruption and Christina Aguilera’s absence prevented the night from becoming the seamless, once-in-a-generation spectacle Philadelphia had envisioned for this historic national milestone.
