Lindsay Clancy: After the Mistrial | A Conversation with James “Buddy” Day

The Lindsay Clancy trial ended in a mistrial — but the conversation surrounding this case is far from over. In this bonus episode, Brandi sits down with James “Buddy” Day, creator and host of Unmarked, for a conversation about the verdict, the jury’s deliberations, and the complicated intersection of mental illness and criminal responsibility. This is also the first of several upcoming collaborations with Buddy. Next up: a deeper look at the Andrea Yates case, why it was compared so often to Lindsay Clancy, and where those comparisons do — and don’t — hold up. Listen to Unmarked wherever you get your podcasts.

  • The Murders of Mary Phagan and Leo Frank

The Murders of Mary Phagan and Leo Frank

In the early morning hours of April 27, 1913, a night watchman at the National Pencil Company in Atlanta, GA, found the body of thirteen-year-old former factory worker Mary Phagan in a basement room of the factory. Mary had been sexually assaulted and strangled, a strip of fabric from her coat still around her neck when she was discovered, and there were two cryptic notes found near the body. Given where Mary was discovered, it was assumed the killer was familiar with the layout of the factory and was either a current or former employee. Just one day later, suspicion fell on two factory employees, a night watchman, Newt Lee, and the factory’s superintendent, twenty-nine-year-old Leo Frank. In time, investigators ruled Lee out, leaving Leo frank as the sole suspect in the girl’s murder. To many, the arrest, prosecution, and failed appeals of Leo Frank had more to do with him being Jewish than they did his being the most likely suspect, but the real outrage was yet to come. Indeed, two years after Phagan’s death and Leo Frank’s conviction, the people of Atlanta would commit an act of extrajudicial violence that would forever stain the conscience of Georgia. Lindsay Clancy & the 13 Medications Prescribed to Her: 48 Hours of No Sleep After New Med

A jury room is supposed to be where a case finally comes together. Instead, it can become a pressure cooker: strangers locked in a cramped space, arguing over evidence, sending desperate notes to the judge, and trying to reach a decision that could change someone’s life forever.   That pressure is at the center of the Lindsay Clancy trial. After hearing the evidence, the jury reportedly remained deadlocked 11–1, leading to a mistrial and leaving the public with more questions than answers.   What evidence divided the room so completely? What made one juror refuse to budge? And what happens if the case goes to trial again?   But the conversation did not stay inside the courthouse. Online, the case has sparked an entirely separate investigation: arguments over guilt vs. insanity, scrutiny of the people involved, theories about Patrick, discussion of the viral Bratz doll video, and crowdsourced searches through records, family ties, and perceived inconsistencies.   In Part 1 of this multipart series, we unpack the courtroom tension, the deadlocked jury, and the internet theories shaping the public narrative around the Lindsay Clancy case.       Full show notes available at RottenMangoPodcast.com Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company.
