Follow the show: On Purpose with Jay Shetty Trigger Warning: Suicide & Self-Harm If you or someone you know is in crisis, please call or text 988 (U.S.) or contact your local emergency services. Have you been feeling down lately? What’s been weighing on you the most? Today, Jay sits down with Dr. Matthew Nock, Harvard psychologist and one of the world’s foremost experts on suicide prevention, to unpack one of the most urgent and misunderstood issues of our time. Together, they dismantle common myths about suicide, revealing that it’s rarely about wanting life to end, but more often about escaping overwhelming pain. Drawing on decades of groundbreaking research, Matthew explains how suicidal thoughts take shape, why they don’t always lead to action, and how depression, anxiety, impulsivity, and social disconnection can shape someone’s experience. Jay and Matthew also look at how culture, gender, and age shape risk, uncovering why men are more likely to die by suicide, why adolescence is such a vulnerable stage, and how isolation later in life can intensify struggle. They examine the double edge of technology and AI, from the dangers of online bullying to the hopeful potential tools that can predict when someone may be most at risk. The conversation underscores the lifesaving power of open dialogue, especially between parents and children, while dispelling the myth that asking about suicide will put the idea in someone’s mind. In this interview, you'll learn: How to Talk About Suicide Without Fear How to Support a Friend in Crisis How to Spot Risk Factors in Adolescents How to Create a Safety Plan at Home How to Use Technology Safely for Mental Health How to Break the Stigma Around Suicide How to Strengthen Hope and Connection You are not alone, and your presence in this world carries more value than you may realize. Is Yuengling Haunted? Ghosts of America’s Oldest Brewery

Episode 47: What’s a ghost’s favorite drink? Boo’s, of course. In this episode of Slice of the Paranormal, we travel to Pottsville, Pennsylvania to investigate the haunted history of Yuengling Brewery—America’s oldest operating brewery. Rumors swirl of former workers still roaming the underground beer caves, hand-dug by miners, and the ghostly echoes that remain. Our journey continues to the Yuengling Mansion on Mahantango Street, where unexplained footsteps, self-opening doors, and reports of spirits—including a young boy and Irish servants—hint at a deeper supernatural story. We also visit the Charles Baber Cemetery, the final resting place of David G. Yuengling (1808–1877), where a ghostly shooting was once reported in the Pottsville Miners Journal. Local legends also speak of Corpse Candles—glowing death omens—seen by Welsh youths among the headstones. Finally, we head to St. Clair, PA to grab a drink at the haunted Wooden Keg Tavern—a former Molly Maguire hangout, complete with a historic Speakeasy and underground tunnel rumored to be as full of spirits as it once was of whiskey. So crack open a bottle, hit play, and join us as we explore the legends, hauntings, and hidden history of Yuengling and the ghosts of Schuylkill County. https://www.yuengling.com Miners Journal - December 2, 1865 https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/35668231/david_gottlob-yuengling Coal Country Ghosts Legends and Lore (Schuylkill and Carbon Counties, Pennsylvania) by Charles J Adams III 2004 https://woodenkegtavern.com Spooky Pennsylvania by S.E. Millheim Hotel Haunting & The Headless Switchman

Episode 46: In this episode of Slice of the Paranormal, the team travels to Centre County, Pennsylvania to investigate two chilling legends. First, we explore the haunted Millheim Hotel, rumored to be the final waiting place of President Millard Fillmore’s mistress. History says he may have fathered a child with her and then disappeared—ghosting her in more ways than one. Is her spirit still roaming the halls, waiting for a man who will never return? Then, we dig into the unsettling local legend of the Headless Switchman—a railroad ghost said to haunt the tracks with a lantern in hand and no head on his shoulders. This spectral figure has been seen since at least 1975, with reports as recent as 2001. Why are railroad ghosts fading from memory across the country… but still so active in Centre County? And of course, we wrap things up with a visit to a local Pennsylvania pizza spot—because ghosts and a proper slice go hand in hand. Episode 45: Slice of the Paranormal has gotten exclusive access to the upcoming horror movie Pig Hill — based on a haunted site we investigated back in Episode 32! While visiting the infamous Pennhurst Asylum, Christy and Steven met horror icon R.A. Mihailoff (best known as Leatherface in Texas Chainsaw Massacre III). They discussed the chilling dark lore of Crawford County’s notorious Pig Hill — a haunted landscape shrouded in local legend. R.A., who has starred in cult horror classics like Hatchet II, Pumpkinhead II: Blood Wings, and Death House, has teamed up with fellow Crawford County native Ted Watts Jr. (Last Flag Flying, The Clog, Pig Hill). Together, they’ve brought this terrifying urban legend to the big screen. Inspired by Nancy Williams’ book Pig Hill, the film blends real Pennsylvania folklore, a local radio tower hill, and the chilling tales of Meadville into a nightmare come alive for horror fans everywhere. Metzgar) Civil War Drummer Boy John Boulton Young, better known as “Boultie” And of course—it wouldn’t be a Slice trip without a stop for local Pennsylvania pizza. 🔦 Paranormal investigation meets strange history, ghost stories, and small-town mysteries.
