#7 Citizen Science in Action: The Urban ReLeaf Project

Welcome to a new episode of The ScienceUs Podcast, a series that explores how collaboration between citizens and researchers helps tackle real-world challenges. In this episode, we speak with Gerid Hager and Todd Harwell about Urban ReLeaf, a project exploring how cities can become more resilient in the face of rising temperatures, heatwaves, and air pollution. By combining citizen observations and data, nature-based solutions, and community engagement, Urban ReLeaf investigates how urban neighbourhoods and greenspaces can be redesigned through citizen observations and data to reduce climate impacts and create healthier environments for all residents. Together, we discuss how collaboration between experts, cities, and communities can support climate adaptation, the role of innovative approaches in creating more resilient urban areas, and how rethinking the way urban policy and planning functions can help build more sustainable and liveable cities. #5 Citizen Science in Action: The Citizens4Water Initiative

Welcome to a new episode of The ScienceUs Podcast, a series that explores how everyday observations become valuable data, and how collaboration between citizens and researchers helps tackle real-world challenges. In this episode, we speak with Karen Verstraelen about Citizens4Water, a global repository of citizen science initiatives on fresh water, and it aims to foster collaboration by creating an overview of what is happening in this field around the world. Developed within UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme (IHP-IX) and coordinated by Scivil, the Flemish citizen science centre, Citizens4Water connects local water observations into an international network that supports shared learning and collective action. Together, we discuss how citizen science can transform everyday experiences with water into meaningful data, the importance of connecting communities with decision-makers, and how participatory approaches can contribute to more inclusive and effective water governance.
