Capitalism vs Socialism: What’s Better for Women’s Rights?

Why do women’s rights advance in some societies — and decline in others? In this episode, historian and gender scholar Kristen Ghodsee explains why economic inequality is one of the most powerful drivers of gender inequality. Drawing on decades of research comparing socialist and capitalist societies, Ghodsee shows how policies such as universal childcare, public services, and guaranteed employment dramatically expanded women’s opportunities in the twentieth century — and why the collapse of these systems often led to renewed discrimination and inequality. But the story is not only historical. We discuss how today’s surge in online misogyny, “trad-wife” narratives, and the rise of the manosphere may be connected to deeper economic transformations — including the possibility that AI-driven job disruptions could trigger a new backlash against women’s participation in the labor force. Dikatakan Bambang Haryo, sebagaimana amanat pasal 33 UUD 1945, campur tangan Pemerintah dalam kebijakan penentuan harga BBM, semestinya menjadi kewenangan yang mengutamakan asas perlindungan kepada masyarakat, bukan malah menyengsarakan rakyat. "Harusnya, Pemerintah dapat bercermin pada pemerintahan terdahulu mulai era Presiden Soeharto sampai dengan Presiden SBY. Dimana pada saat pemerintahan Presiden Soeharto harga BBM mulai dari tahun 1980 sampai dengan tahun 1990 sebesar Rp 150 perliter sama persis dengan harga BBM di Arab Saudi. Pada Tahun 1998 dalam keadaan krisis moneter, dollar mencapai Rp16.000 lebih, harga BBM oktan 90 pada waktu itu terpaksa dinaikkan dari 700rupiah perliter menjadi 1.200rupiah perliter, dan pemerintahan Presiden Habibie menurunkan kembali harga BBM menjadi 600rupiah perliter"Kata Bambang Haryo. Dilanjutkan, anggota DPR-RI periode 2014-2019 ini, Presiden Gusdur juga sempat menurunkan harga BBM ditahun 2000 dari Rp1.000 perliter menjadi Rp600 perliter, bahkan juga pemerintahan Presiden SBY sempat menurunkan tarif tahun 2008 dari Rp5.500 perliter menjadi Rp4.500 perliter, dan dalam 10 tahun hanya terjadi satu kali kenaikan pada tahun 2013, itupun diprotes keras oleh masyarakat dan para elit politik. Padahal ada alasan terkait harga minyak dunia naik dan terakumulasi tinggi di tahun 2008 sampai tahun 2013 sebesar 145 USD per barrel. Pungkas BHS.

Vincent Clerc, CEO of Maersk: Freedom of navigation will depend on some kind of deal between the two sides at war

“We need to get back to something where freedom of navigation and peaceful navigation is restored, and that will depend on some kind of deal between the two sides in that war.” Jonathan Josephs speaks to Vincent Clerc, CEO of Maersk the world’s second largest shipping company. The conflict between Iran, Israel and the United States has led to the closure of the vital Strait of Hormuz. It’s one of the world’s most important shipping routes which before this war, carried about a fifth of global oil supplies. Cargo ships there are being targeted, and seafarers have been killed. The disruption is halting the transport of vital cargo containers and pushing up energy prices. Countries in the Gulf region like Saudi Arabia, rely heavily on energy exports, and, Asia, where much of it is sold, will be hit hard. Food and fertiliser supplies are also being affected. It's not just the Strait of Hormuz that's being disrupted. Security threats mean shipping is also avoiding the Red Sea route through the Suez Canal, which because of the sheer volume of cargo traffic, is arguably more important to global trade. Vincent Clerc says the cost of war will have to be passed on, leading to higher prices for consumers around the world. Thank you to Jonathan Josephs for his help in making this programme. The Hidden Economic Dangers Of Supreme Court Overreach - ft. Steve Vladeck

For decades, Americans viewed the Supreme Court as an impartial referee standing above the political fray. However, public trust in this vital institution has recently plummeted to historic lows. Many observers blame a surge in ideological rulings that align with the party of the President who appointed each justice. If the referee is suddenly wearing a team jersey, the fundamental systems of democracy and capitalism begin to break down. Georgetown University Law Professor Steve Vladeck joins Luigi and Bethany to argue that the real culprit isn't just partisan justices, but a complete abdication of responsibility by Congress. Rather than viewing judicial reform as a zero-sum game of packing the court, he proposes that lawmakers must reclaim their constitutional authority to check judicial overreach. He explains how special interest groups have successfully manipulated this power vacuum to reshape American regulations. This perspective completely reframes the crisis from a partisan dispute into a structural collapse of institutional power. This episode explores the hidden mechanisms that allow unaccountable judges to unilaterally rewrite the rules of our economic system, why decades of political complacency allowed this shift and what actionable steps can actually fix it. Calibrating China Ties - Indonesia

Indonesia has been trying to find its footing as a major international player over the past decade. These efforts include trying to deepen investment and trade relationships with the People's Republic of China while skirting around differences over territorial claims and addressing Beijing’s rising prominence across Southeast Asia. Of concern as well is the pressure Chinese exports are placing on small and medium-sized enterprises in Indonesia, along with the safety of the hundreds of thousands of Indonesian citizens working in Taiwan should Beijing escalate the use of force across the Taiwan Strait. Host Ian Chong examines these issues with guests Natalie Sambhi and Yohanes Sulaiman. Natalie Sambhi is Founder and Executive Director of Verve Research, Señor Policy Fellow at the Asia Society Australia, and Non-Resident Fellow with the Brookings Institution’s Foreign Policy Program. Adam Smith In The Age of The “Epstein Class” - ft. MP Jesse Norman

As we approach the 250th anniversary of Adam Smith's “Wealth of Nations" this March, his theories on competition and the invisible hand remain part of the bedrock of modern economics. But, have we undermined those theories in our economy today? Widespread public anger suggests there is a growing belief that our current economic system is fundamentally rigged by those at the top. In many instances, backroom access and elite networking appear to be driving who becomes wealthy and successful instead of meritocratic competition. What would the father of economics think about today's crony capitalism, and what would he make of the so-called "Epstein class"? In this episode, we are joined by British Member of Parliament and author of “Adam Smith: Father of Economics” Jesse Norman. He argues that people often forget Smith deeply distrusted concentrated power, highlighting that Smith was heavily critical of wealth generated from insider knowledge or collusion. Smith condemned these practices precisely because they destroy the genuine competition required for free markets to actually benefit society. Applying this historical lens to current events, co-host Luigi Zingales provocatively asks if the so-called “Epstein Class” embody Adam Smith’s worst fears, coordinating favors to bypass free market competition. Co-host Bethany McLeans debates whether we should call it a class, or if fixating on Epstein is a distraction from the broader systemic corruption threatening capitalism today. This episode offers a fresh look at the father of economics, and it is the first in a series of episode we’re doing that strip away the caricatures of Adam Smith to ask what he’d really make of today’s capitalism.
