How small is a molecule? What is the color of light? How can quantum physics spoil food? Neil deGrasse Tyson and comic co-host Chuck Nice visualize a molecule’s actual size, break down the different colors of light, and the physics of what’s going on in your fridge.  NOTE: StarTalk+ Patrons can listen to this entire episode commercial-free  here: https://startalkmedia.com/show/thing-you-thought-you-knew-red-hot-blue-hot/ Thanks to our Patrons Kyle Brown, Jackie Meyer, Susan Schaubel, TheOGrestauranteur, Raf Fiol, David Sternberg, Ian, Ravi Seshadri, Marilyn Woodruff, Billy Boswell, reexilla, Евгений Семилетов, David Colón, Stephen Garr, Denver Naicker, David Carter, Reggie from Decatur, Ezekiel Reeves, GopherLove, Bryan Ebert, Jaidyn Janis, Mat Hill, Serin Dipity, Alpay Büyükyavuz, Conner Poll, Isabella, Nick Staffa, Mike Beeman, Andrew Walls, Emily Ashby-Flores, Jonathan Blackburn, Ramon Alarcon, Vincent Sheffer, Vonté Rushdan, Fopetar, jmb64, Aleksandr Kolchanov, Sunshine Squared, OMNI Ludicrous, Natalie Spangler, swimeveryday, Dean Winters, Rostislav Shnaper, Zach Zabel, t, Bill Doss, Sheilah Oliver, Kim Nash-Game, Micah Lettuce, Taylor Bittle, Jamie Clark, Jae Starks, Emily & Justin, Christopher Rogers, Koral Gail Eileen Hamilton, Kenny G, Onlydying, Jim, Ray Walker, Eli, Michael Garcia, Paul Stephen Howard, Kamilah Morton, Seth Osborn, Tyler Dixon, Kenneth Strickland, SpitfireBanksRight, Jose Hernandez, Nia Gill, raju, Pinky MacGyver, Mukunth Natarajan, John Zoeller, Toni Zugel, Lindsey King, Jonathan, Rocco Rizzo, Bengo Bashi, bret sechler, TheFailedPhysicist, James fish, GamerBach, John P. Kleptotherms

In this episode, we break the thermometer and watch the mercury spill out as we discover that temperature is far stranger than it seems. We first ran this episode in 2021: Five stories that run the gamut from snakes to stars. We start out underwater, with a species of snake that has evolved a devious trick for keeping warm. Then we hear the tale of a young man whose seemingly simple method of warming up might be the very thing making him cold. And Senior Correspondent Molly Webster blows the lid off the idea that 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit is a sound marker of health.  EPISODE CREDITS: Reported by - Lulu Miller and Molly Webster Produced by - Becca Bressler, Lulu Miller and Molly Webster with help from - Carin Leong Fact-checking by - Emily Krieger Sign up for our newsletter!! The Science of Sleeping, Breathing, and Hydration

Why would anyone need to be taught how to sleep, breathe, or drink water? Those are things you already do every day. And yet, it turns out most of us are doing them just wrong enough to undermine our health. In this SYSK Trending episode, I talk with Michael Breus, one of the world’s leading sleep experts, about how small adjustments to when and how you sleep, breathe, and hydrate can produce outsized benefits for your energy, immunity, metabolism, and long-term health. Dr. Breus is a double-board-certified clinical psychologist and sleep specialist, and the author of Sleep Drink Breathe: Simple Daily Habits for Profound Long-Term Health (https://amzn.to/3ZposzW). His research shows that better health doesn’t always require doing more—it often comes from doing the basics correctly. This is simple advice, but it’s powerful—and it may change how you think about your daily habits. (Finite) Numbers So Large They'd Destroy You

It starts as a friendly challenge: who can name the biggest number? The only rule? Infinity doesn’t count. What follows is a journey through the biggest finite numbers ever imagined. From Archimedes’ grains of sand to Graham’s Number, a sequence so vast it stretches the limits of human comprehension, Professor Hannah Fry and Michael Stevens tumble through this strange landscape of scale, tracing how mathematicians have pushed counting to its absolute edge. But beyond vast calculations, perhaps this is less about numbers and more about us. Why do humans push at the limits of finitude at all? How do we represent the biggest numbers in existence? Why can’t our brains feel the difference between a million, a billion, and a trillion? And when do big numbers affect our ability to empathise with others? ------------------- For more information about Cancer Research UK, their research, breakthroughs and how you can support them, visit https://cancerresearchuk.org/restisscience Cancer Research UK is a registered charity in England and Wales (1089464), Scotland (SC041666), the Isle of Man (1103) and Jersey (247). Coming Clean

Last week, we talked with psychologist Leslie John about the costs of keeping secrets. Today, Leslie returns with a look at the psychological power of self-disclosure. She says the moments of oversharing that we often consider "TMI" can actually strengthen our relationships. Then, in the second half of the show, listeners share their thoughts and questions about the expectations we put on modern marriages. Psychologist Eli Finkel returns for the latest installment of our series "Your Questions Answered."  Our next stops on Hidden Brain’s live tour are just weeks away! Join Shankar for an evening of science and storytelling in Philadelphia on March 21 or New York City on March 25. He’ll be sharing seven key psychological insights from his first decade hosting the show. And stayed tuned for more tour stops to be announced later this spring! If you missed our original conversation with Eli Finkel, you can find it here. And here's where you can check out his podcast, "Love Factually." When the Wellness Narrative Breaks: Truth, Discernment & Women's Safety

In this episode of The Resetter Podcast, Dr. Mindy Pelz sits down with Sara Szal for a thoughtful conversation about discernment, trust, and why so many women are quietly questioning the wellness and health narratives they were once told to accept. Rather than telling listeners what to believe, this discussion explores how to think, how to stay grounded, curious, and connected to your intuition without slipping into fear, cynicism, or blind trust. Together, they talk about power, silence, authority, and why learning to ask better questions is an essential part of women's health, safety, and self-trust. This episode is an invitation to slow down, reflect, and reconnect with your inner guidance in a world full of noise. Song of the Cerebellum

One spring evening in 2024, a science journalist named Rachel Gross bombed at karaoke. The culprit was a bleed in a fist-sized clump of neurons tucked down in the back of her brain called the cerebellum. A couple weeks later, her doctors took a bit of it out, assuring her it was just helping her with motor coordination — she might be a bit clumsy for a while, but she’d still be herself. But afterwards, she didn't feel like herself. So she dove into the dusty basement of the brain (and brain science) to figure out why. What Rachel found was a burgeoning new frontier in neuroscience. We learn what singing Shakira on stage has to do with reaching for a cup of coffee — and how the surprising relationship between the two is making us rethink what we think about thinking. Special thanks to Warzone Karaoke at Branded Saloon, Dr. Joanne Loewy and the Singing Together, Measure by Measure choir at the Louis Armstrong Center for Music and Medicine  (http://musicandmedicine.org/) at Mount Sinai Union Square, Dag Spicer and the Computer History Museum, Désirée Lie, Mark Gross, Daniel A. Gross, Brittany Aguilar, and, of course, Shakira. What We Said To Aliens

What happens when humanity dares to shout a cosmic “hello”? Could it help alien civilisations decode human mathematics, our DNA, the blueprints of who we are? And why did we blast the 3-trillion-watt message into the stars in the first place…only to never try anything like it again? This is the story of the Arecibo message. Welcome to The Rest Is Science: Field Notes. Every Thursday, Hannah and Michael rummage through their personal troves of scientific treasure and source discoveries that explain our understanding the universe, oddities that scramble our brains, objects that hint at forces we’ll never see...and a few things that are essentially just plain cool. 166 - Steve Rathje: The Psychology of Virality

Su chats with Dr. Steve Rathje. Dr. Rathje is an incoming Assistant Professor of Human-Computer Interaction in the School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University. He is an NSF and AXA postdoctoral fellow at New York University. Steve’s work centers on the psychology of technology. He studies how core psychological phenomena like polarization, intergroup conflict, the spread of information, and mental health interact with emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and social media. Through a combination of behavioral science, computational methods, and large-scale data, his research sheds light on how our minds and our societies are being shaped in the digital age. In today's episode, we discuss his research background together with his recent review paper “The psychology of virality," in which they explore why certain content spreads rapidly online and offline, often involving a mix of emotional, social, and structural factors..
