In addition, we are joined by Prof. Awi Blumenfeld, esteemed for his lead role in the Slave Labor Compensation Project and his dedicated Shoah research. He lectures at Yad Vashem, directs a Jewish education centre in Vienna, and advises the Austrian Government on anti-Semitism. Together, we discuss current events before moving on to history. During the early 20th century, the Zionist movement experienced significant developments between 1900 and 1930, responding to many challenges and opportunities. The Kishinev pogrom in 1903 became a catalytic event for Zionism, prompting a wave of Jewish emigration and enhancing the drive for a safe haven for Jews in Palestine, leading to the Second Aliyah. This period also witnessed discussions and debates among Zionists about practical versus political Zionism, with figures like Herzl considering alternative plans like the Uganda Scheme after facing relentless anti-Semitic violence. Amid these tumultuous times, Zionism evolved with a growing realisation of the need for a Jewish national homeland to ensure safety and continuity for the Jewish people under constant threat.
