Future of Labour Post COVID-19: Part 3

COVID has accelerated automation of labour and has forced monitoring of workers and their bodies. This excessive collection of data of labour not only brings in the question of violations of their right to privacy but other issues of labour rights and their violations by the platforms. The forceful collection of data from the labour leads to many questions of ownership of the data, the impact of this data on their wages, work and their personal life. The never-ending question of will this data be used to replace the worker with a machine still looms us? In this 3 part series, we have experts Aditi Surie, Urvashi Aneja, Anupam Guha, explaining these issues in detail. These episodes are based on the webinar “Rise of Employee Surveillance post-COVID and Labour Rights Violations” conducted by Suno India on 30 May 2020. People's Movement to Save the Internet

The internet was built by people, they made it there home and used it to teach people skills and spread knowledge. Several individuals grew up with internet, they knew the value of it. In 2015, when they saw facebook attempting to take control over it using their FreeBasics and Internet.org program, people rose up. They turned it into what was called the Net-Neutrality Movement or SavetheInternet Movement. This movement led to the formation of Internet Freedom Foundation. काम की ज़िंदगी – तकनीकीकरण में मिला नया काम, लेकिन पुराने दिहाड़ी मजदूर जैसे अधिकार: फ़ूड डिलिव्र

आज के तकनीकीकरण के दौर में हम "Gig Work" या "Platform Work " जैसे नाम बहुत सुनते हैं। इस तरह का काम बहुत सारी एग्रीगेटरकम्पनीज के द्वारा मोबाइल एप्लीकेशन की सहायता से संचालित किया जाता हे। इन् कम्पनीज में "फ़ूड या खाद्य एग्रीगेटर कम्पनी" जैसे की Zomato, Swiggy, Big Basket के नाम काफी प्रचलित हैं। इस तरह के "Gig Work" के तहत लोगों को लघु या दीर्घ अवधि के लिए काम दिया जाता हे और इन् लोगों का काम एक दिहाड़ी मजदूर के सामान ही होता हे। इस तरह के कम्पनियों के आने से रोज़गार के अवसर तो बढ़ें हैं, लेकिन क्या तकनीकीकरण की इस दौड़ में पारदर्शिता या काम करने वाले श्रमिक के अधिकार भी बढ़े हैं? क्या श्रमिक इस तरह के रोज़गार में एक स्थायी नौकरी और एक अच्छा जीवन जीने की चाह को पूरा कर पाते हैं? क्या वह अपनी मज़दूरी या काम के हालात खुद सुधार पाते हैं? उनकी क्या अपेक्षायें हैं? इन्ही प्रशनो के उत्तर और "Gig Work" या "Platform Work" के बारे में विस्तार से जानने के लिए हम लाये हैं "काम की ज़िंदगी" एक नयी मिनी - सीरीज। बात मुलाकात की इस नयी मिनी - सीरीज के पहले एपिसोड में होस्ट अनुमेहा यादव ने एक फ़ूड डिलीवरी वर्कर अहमद से बात की, जो कि यह काम पिछले दो साल से कर रहे हैं और करोना महामारी आने के बाद भी अपनी पढ़ाई के साथ साथ भी इन्होने ये काम जारी रखा हे। सुनो इंडिया ने इन मुद्दों पर Zomato को 17 मई को ई मेल पर लिखित सवाल भेज कर और जानकारी माँगी। एपिसोड लाइव होने तक उनका इस पर कोई जवाब नहीं आया था। See sunoindia.in/privacy-policy for privacy information.

Safety Trouble

Last week the country was shocked to hear about the rape and murder of a young veterinary doctor in Hyderabad. The Home Minister of the Telangana blamed the victim for not calling the emergency police helpline 100 and instead choosing to ask for help from her immediate family. This incident has caused much uproar and has brought the question of women's safety into mainstream debate. After the rape of Nirbhaya in 2012, a fund for women safety was created by the Government of India to improve women safety. The fund has been used for new initiatives like emergency panic buttons in transport vehicles like autos, CCTV cameras, police apps and other emergency services like a call centre for emergency number 112. These new initiatives while providing a sense of safety do not always work. FASTag Conundrum

The Ministry of Road Transports and Highways recently notified all national highway toll plazas to dedicate all lanes except one cashless lanes using FastTag. The Ministry is effectively making FastTag mandatory from December 1, 2019. FastTag is India's version of the electronic toll system being implemented using the ISO standard equivalent for RFID based toll collection. All new vehicles since 2018 in the country have been sold with FastTag installed at the time of registration.
