  • Lest We Forget: The Poppy & Remembrance Day in Ireland

Lest We Forget: The Poppy & Remembrance Day in Ireland

Every November, the Royal British Legion organises remembrance ceremonies and millions of people wear red poppies. Often portrayed as a way to remember the dead of the World Wars, these commemorations have a far more complicated history in Ireland and Britain. They have been contested since their inception. In the 1920s, remembrance ceremonies in Dublin became a focus for unionist demonstrations after independence, provoking considerable unrest. During the Troubles, commemorations honouring the British armed forces became contentious in new ways given the British Army’s role in the conflict in the North. In this episode, historian Brian Hanley joins me to explore the contentious history of the poppy and Remembrance Day in Ireland. From British Army veterans and clashes over commemoration in the 1920s to the central place of the Somme in modern loyalism we explore what these ceremonies and commemoration are for. Sound by Kate Dunlea. Footage of Armistice Day in Dublin in 1925 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c0FHpoGGMZc Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

    Archive: The Measurement of Time

Misha Glenny chooses the first of his archive picks - bringing back classic conversations from the In Our Time archive, every Monday. Humans have tried to calculate, regulate, and measure time for thousands of years: from systems based on tracking sunrise and sunset, to the invention of increasingly precise mechanical alarm clocks and astrolabes. In this archive episode, first released in March 2012, Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss the methods used to measure time throughout human history. Early civilisations used the movements of heavenly bodies to tell the time, but in the ancient world there were also sophisticated timekeeping devices such as water clocks. The development of mechanical clocks in Europe emerged in the medieval period, when monks used such devices to sound an alarm to signal it was the hour to pray, although these clocks did not tell them the time. For hundreds of years clocks were inaccurate and it proved hard to remedy the problems, let alone settle on a standard time that a whole country should follow. It was the advent of the railways that meant time finally became standardised in Britain during the mid-19th century, and in 1884 Greenwich became the prime meridian of the world. Atomic clocks now mark the passing of the days, hours, and minutes and they are capable of keeping time to a second in 15 million years. • Why the French Revolution was a financial revolution - Part 1

Why the French Revolution was a financial revolution - Part 1

The French Revolution was a bloody fight for liberty, equality and fraternity. But it was also a battle over money. In part 1 of our series on the French Revolution, host Robin Wigglesworth explores the revolution’s economic origins with Rebecca Spang, historian and author of Stuff and Money in the Time of the French Revolution. They look at the time of the ‘ancien régime’ and the reign of King Louis XVI, to the storming of the Bastille and the development of a controversial new currency called, at different times, both a “saviour of France” and a “poison".
