How To Navigate Separation And Family Court In Ireland

Family court can feel like a circus when you’re walking in with a broken heart, no sleep, and a head full of “what ifs”. We talk to Paddy, one of the people behind TalkToUs.ie, and Nicole, the creator of Courtwise, about what actually helps when you’re facing separation, divorce, maintenance questions, and child access disputes in Ireland. Their goal is simple: take you out of the dark place, help you understand the system, and get you moving with a plan that protects your mental health and your children. We get practical about the day-to-day realities of the Irish family law process: the fear of Dolphin House, the intimidation of sitting near an ex-partner, and the frustration of changing judges and endless adjournments. Paddy explains how their group supports men and women, why they teach people to become confident lay litigants, and how to instruct a solicitor instead of being steamrolled by one. We also dig into the in-camera rule, why it exists, and why so many people believe it can hide bad practice and inconsistent outcomes. Nicole shares what a multi-year court battle does to your life, and why evidence wins over storytelling. We unpack parental alienation, breaches of access orders, and why detailed notes can protect you years later when a child asks what really happened. We also cover “voice of the child” assessments and section reports, typical costs, and concerns about questionable expert credentials. If you’re co-parenting after a split, this conversation offers clear guidance, hard truths, and genuine solidarity. If this helps, please subscribe, share it with someone who needs it, and leave a review so more parents in Ireland can find it. What part of the court process do you wish someone had explained to you sooner? Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

The prisoner who was forced to celebrate a World Cup victory

Miriam Lewin was never much interested in football. Growing up in Buenos Aires, she cared far more about politics than the team her family supported. But in 1978, when Argentina won the World Cup, she found herself among the celebrating fans, hidden in plain sight as a political prisoner. A year earlier, aged 19, Miriam had been abducted by Argentina's military dictatorship and became one of the country's desaparecidos – the "disappeared." Detained in secret and tortured because of her political activism, she was later forced to work for the regime, translating foreign news reports and helping produce propaganda aimed at improving its image abroad. From inside the prison system, she also learned of the dictatorship's notorious "death flights." When Argentina hosted – and won – the World Cup, the military government used the tournament to project an image of national pride and unity. Miriam and other prisoners were taken onto the streets to join the jubilant crowds. Decades later, after becoming a journalist, she helped uncover the regime's crimes and bring former members of the military junta to justice. This interview contains references to suicide and descriptions of torture. The Kiss of Life photo that earned a Pulitzer Prize

In 1967, American lineman JD Thompson was working on overhead power lines in Jacksonville, Florida, when his colleague Randall Champion accidentally grasped a live cable. Seeing his friend dangling high above the ground, JD ran over and climbed the pole to perform mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. At the same time, local photographer Rocco Morabito just happened to be driving past and captured the moment. The image made that evening’s edition of the Jacksonville Journal with the caption 'The Kiss of Life' and was soon syndicated around the world. The following year, Morabito was awarded the 1968 Pulitzer Prize for Spot News Photography. JD tells Patrick Kiteley how it felt to be involved in such a dramatic rescue. Eye-witness accounts brought to life by archive. Witness History is for those fascinated by and curious about the past. We take you to the events that have shaped our world through the eyes of the people who were there. For nine minutes every day, we take you back in time and all over the world, to examine wars, coups, scientific discoveries, cultural moments and much more. Recent episodes explore everything from how the Excel spreadsheet was developed, the creation of cartoon rabbit Miffy and how the sound barrier was broken. We look at the lives of some of the most famous leaders, artists, scientists and personalities in history, including: the moment Reagan and Gorbachev met in Geneva, Haitian singer Emerante de Pradines’ life and Omar Sharif’s legendary movie entrance in Lawrence of Arabia. You can learn all about fascinating and surprising stories, like the invention of a stent which has saved lives around the world; the birth of the G7; and the meeting of Maldives’ ministers underwater. We cover everything from World War Two and Cold War stories to Black History Month and our journeys into space. (Photo: The Kiss of Life.
