134: Baby Gadgets, Gimmicks and Red Flags

This week on Baby Tribe, Afif and Anne take a closer look at the baby products being marketed to exhausted parents, from sleep pods, reflux pillows and weighted sleep suits to formula prep machines, nasal aspirators, rectal wind devices, baby monitors, walkers and bouncers. The episode is not about shaming parents for buying products that promise help. It is about asking better questions before clicking “add to cart”. Does the product support safety, or does it introduce risk? Is it solving a real problem, or selling reassurance to tired parents? And does it follow the basic principles of safe sleep, safe feeding, safe movement and sensible monitoring? With practical advice, plenty of honesty, and a healthy suspicion of pastel-coloured nonsense, this episode gives parents a simple framework for deciding what is useful, what is unnecessary, and what should probably stay out of the cot, the bottle, the buggy, or the baby’s holes. https://www2.hse.ie/babies-children/first-aid/choking-in-babies/ Learn more about your ad choices. Ronni Ancona: "Overwhelming" Motherhood, Surviving 2000s Comedy & Late ADHD Diagnosis

BAFTA-winning comedy icon and EastEnders star Ronni Ancona joins us on the sofa for an absolute rollercoaster of an episode! Fresh off a wild, tooth-losing "school mothers' night out" (and nursing a severe liver hangover), Ronni strips back the famous masks to give us the raw, chaotic truth about her life. From the relentless exhaustion of raising children who didn't sleep for 12 years to her late-in-life ADHD diagnosis in her 40s, Ronni opens up about the crippling pressure of people-pleasing, masking, and feeling like she was "failing at everything" while navigating the peak of UK fame. We take a nostalgic trip down memory lane to look at the casual sexism of 2000s television, what it was really like making a massive hit comedy show with her ex Alistair McGowan, and the hilarious moment Posh and Becks invited them to a party... just to have them coat-check the guests. Plus, Ronni shares incredible, heartwarming stories from her pre-fame days as a teacher at a tough all-boys school, her current brilliant stint as Bea Pollard on Albert Square, and why she's a self-proclaimed, "over-loving" mother. 🍎 THANK A TEACHER WITH TESCO! 🍏 This episode is proudly sponsored by Tesco, who are supporting the National Thank a Teacher Day campaign! We all know how vital teachers are for providing security, guidance, and changing children's lives. Every teacher recommended will be entered into an exclusive draw to win up to £1,000 worth of fresh fruit and veg for their school! EP218 Úna, Three Births, IUGR, C-section, VBAC, Positive Birth Story

This week, I’m sharing my chat with Úna, who talks me through her three very different birth experiences. During her first pregnancy, Úna was closely monitored after her baby was diagnosed with IUGR (intrauterine growth restriction). As concerns grew, she was admitted to hospital for more intensive monitoring, and her baby was born by c-section at just 29 weeks. Úna shares her experience of navigating life with a premature baby in the NICU. We then revisit her second pregnancy and the VBAC she had hoped for. While the birth itself was a positive experience, Úna reflects on how the everything connected with her first experienced surface as she welcomed her second child. Finally, we discuss her third pregnancy and another VBAC. Supported by her husband and midwives who wholeheartedly believed in her, Úna describes a birth experience that left her feeling empowered and supported. 133: The Freebirth Movement: Choice, Risk and Accountability

In this episode of The Baby Tribe, Afif speaks with Irish Times journalist Ellen Coyne about her reporting on the rise of freebirth in Ireland: giving birth without a midwife, doctor or trained medical professional present. Ellen discusses what led her to investigate the movement, the concerns raised by senior midwives, the lack of clear data around unassisted births, and how online communities can frame freebirth as empowering while failing to fully engage with the risks. After the interview, Afif and Anne debrief the issue from neonatal and obstetric perspectives. They explore why some women may feel drawn away from maternity services, including previous trauma, poor communication, lack of continuity of care and fear of intervention. They also examine the role of social media, doulas, birthkeepers and unregulated advice in shaping decisions during one of the most vulnerable times in a woman’s life. This is not a conversation about shaming women. It is about safety, autonomy, trust and accountability. Birth trauma is real. Consent matters. But real empowerment is not being left alone with risk. It is having accurate information, respectful care and skilled support available when things change. Birth is not a purity test. There is no gold medal for suffering. https://www.irishtimes.com/health/2026/06/06/free-births-in-ireland-concern-grows-for-women-choosing-births-without-medical-help/ Learn more about your ad choices. The mental load we carry in our bodies with Michelle Flynn

What happens when motherhood doesn't just change your life, but changes your nervous system? This week, Dominique McMullan is joined by psychotherapist Michelle Flynn, who specialises in maternal mental health, perinatal anxiety, birth trauma and somatic therapy. Together they explore matrescence, the profound identity shift that accompanies motherhood, and why so many women feel unprepared for the emotional and psychological transformation that follows having children. Michelle shares both professional expertise and personal experience as they discuss perinatal anxiety, birth trauma, rage, resentment, burnout, perimenopause and the challenges of being constantly "on" as a mother. Most importantly, they dive into the role of the nervous system and the growing field of somatic work, exploring how stress and trauma can become embodied and why healing often requires more than simply talking.
