Episode 7 - Life, Love & Making Profit Online in Africa ft. Adewale Adejumo

Episode 7 - Life, Love & Making Profit Online in Africa ft. Adewale Adejumo

Episode 7 started as an opportunity to invite a guest to discuss online entrepreneurship and hacks for creatives and other small business entrepreneurs to make passive incomes online. We were able to invite Adewale Adejumo - one of the most sort after South African eCommerce speakers and entrepreneurs on this topic. However, in true hippie fashion, the conversation took some surprise turns early on as we wound up discussing athletics, WWE wrestling, Adewale’s music taste as well as his perspective on human genetic modification. When we eventually decided to get serious after about 25 minutes of good banter, we finally got going in a more practical direction to unpack his journey into the rough and tough world of eCommerce business in Africa.

As he tells it himself, as a boy, he believed that he would be the director of a science institute one day. So, early on in his career he got a BSc in Genetics and an MSc in Plant Pathology - until he ran short of money for his studies and like a well-seasoned mixtape rapper, he began selling Chinese electronic tablets from the boot of his car in 2010. This small business proved so lucrative that it led him to doing a postgraduate diploma in Marketing, Finance, Banking and Investment. In 2013, he then took a leap of faith and founded Zasttra.com – which went on to become one of South Africa’s fastest growing online retail stores. He was young, black and trailblazing. From building Zasttra came with many accolades and opportunities, such as speaking on the TEDxCapeTown stage, guest speaking at Google Start-Up Grind and acknowledgement as one of the 100 Young Independents in South Africa amongst many other media accomplishments. So we know your question: Why in the world in this prestigious gentleman sitting in the same room to do a podcast with 2 struggle rappers named TeethSwag & Ndarkie. Surely he is better than this?

Outside of having a long running friendship with podcast host TeethSwag, Adewale also has a genuine inside story about all the realities one faces in doing online business in Africa. Having just launched his second ecommerce platform named Dropstore which simplifies online business trade for South Africans, he wanted to use this opportunity to share his story, insights, challenges and expertise with budding online entrepreneurs of the future. So, with over 10 years’ experience building leading eCommerce platforms in the tough African digital marketing space - he is armed with amazing online business hacks for this episode that will help you gain digital relevance, sustainability and profitability on the online world

Episode 6 - Investing on a Hippies Budget of R250 or Less ft. Dineo Tsamela

Episode 6 - Investing on a Hippies Budget of R250 or Less ft. Dineo Tsamela

Episode 6 finds our hosts TeethSwag and Ndarkie yet again completely outclassed on the microphone as they’re joined by another caliber of guest beyond their intellectual pay-grade. Today we're joined by Nelspruit born Dineo Tsamela who leads a new wave of young and tech savvy South African financial industry professionals who are making it their business to educate and inform the African masses about better ways of managing their money. The self-confessed bookworm is no stranger to debt herself since early in her career she found herself overwhelmed with debt and no real plan as to how to get herself out of the financial distress that most young people seem to find themselves in. So she did what any young lady in her early twenties would do – moved to Joburg and took a four year break from all social activities, cutting down her spending to her most basic living expenses and proceeded to kick life’s financially draining butt. The best thing of all? She survived and lived to share her tail of survival with hippies all around the world!.

Now far removed from the earlier stresses that slowed her down earlier on in her career, today Dineo finds herself professionally stationed as a Communication Manager of Global Markets in the banking sector as well operating as a sort-after media speaker, columnist and panelist on all matters relating to money and investing in South Africa. In between founding her labour of love financial literacy blog Piggy Banker, freelancing for City Press and The Sunday Times as a business columnist and authoring her own ebook “A Step-by-Step Guide to Paying off Your Debt”, Dineo also somehow finds time to be a mom and an avid traveler.

In the next hour and a half, TeethSwag and Ndarkie attempt their first fully sober episode as they deep dive into her life journey so far, her love and passion for the arts as well as some critical pointers she gives our hosts on how to move from being in debt to being a smarter investor on a hippies budget.

Episode 5 - How to Adult with Your Finances ft. Morwesi Ramonyai

Episode 5 - How to Adult with Your Finances ft. Morwesi Ramonyai

We're back to wrap up season 1 and what a journey it has been! Episode 5 is finally here and its available everywhere. According to TeethSwag, this Finance for Hippies episode is also the first classic episode (aka 5 mics, aka XXL) as our guest Morwesi Ramonyai gives our podcast hosts the 411 and honest hard truth on "How to Adult with your Finances". Outside of being one of the coolest, humble and funniest people you will ever meet, at her young age Morwesi holds an Executive MBA from the University of Cape Town and is a trailblazing impact entrepreneur with a keen passion for developing ideas and projects that create effective social impact. Her expertise extend to the energy and fintech space where she spends her days running her company Borena Energy.

Over uncapped sips of Krone Borealis Bru, Morwesi finally brought some class to our ratchet podcast set as she took us through her journey from huge financial debt and being blacklisted - to becoming the person Ndarkie refers too as "a fully fledged adult". Through experiencing many losses and wins in her entrepreneurship journey, this interview is really special as she really does not hold back on insights and pockets of excellence gained from her years of experience. As someone who no longer engages too much with the media, she really used this platform to openly discuss a range of topics - from the false fantasy of life as an entrepreneur, personal self-worth when it comes to money, all the way to proving that even super anarchist TeethSwag benefited from having a job.

Not sure if we're qualified to use the words 'Hard Hitting Interview" when it comes to our content yet, but if we didn't come close this episode, I doubt that we ever will. Or maybe you just a hater ;-)
