    #160 The Glory of Holycross

Holycross didn't always have that name... until the arrival of a relic of the True Cross arrived it was known as the Church of the Eight Hands -- for rather gruesome reasons. There's a lot more to this church than you might notice on first glance, and I'm happy to tell you some highlights.

Imaginary Ireland

The podcasters forget (or ignore) that Ireland is a modern country and a member of the European Union. Instead they purport the image of The Quiet Man; they would have listeners believe Ireland is all thatched roof cottages, leprechauns and rural pubs. This is what the tour books sell you: A fantasy. The podcast is the equivalent of a Thomas Kinkaide painting and has no basis in reality. They never seem to discuss current news events, government scandal, taxes, immigration or the EU economy. That's because they don't live here. Avoid the Irish Fireside. The podcasters are tourists from the American midwest, infatuated with their storybook images, pretending to be experts on a country they don't live in. If you want to learn about Ireland, you're better off picking up a copy of the Irish Independent newspaper.
