The Haka; A Case of Cultural Appropriation by the LDS Church?

The Haka; A Case of Cultural Appropriation by the LDS Church?

On this episode of Mormonish Podcast, Rebecca and Landon are joined by Dr. Hemopereki Simon to discuss his recent article, "Rolling our eyes towards god: an intervention arising from Mormon missionary YouTube activity and the cultural (mis)appropriation of haka."
Dr. Simon discusses the haka’s cultural background and many ways in which it is culturally appropriated.
He specifically explores the (mis)appropriation of haka by a group of Latter-day Saint missionaries in Wangarratta, Australia, who wrote and performed an English-language haka that can be viewed as violent and offensive to those who understand the true significance of the haka.
We also discuss the LDS church and white patriarchal salvation, framed by the use of the haka by white LDS missionaries.
This is very interesting topic and we're very glad that Dr. Simon was able to join us for an episode of Mormonish.

The Beehive State by Rob Lauer: A Readers' Theater Production

The Beehive State by Rob Lauer: A Readers' Theater Production

Mormonish Podcast's Rebecca and Landon are joined by playwrite Rob Lauer as we present Rob’s award winning play "Beehive State" as a readers' theater theatrical production.
The play centers around a polygamous family in post manifesto era Utah and was written by Rob Lauer, who is a post Mormon and now a member of Reformed Mormonism. He is also the former director of The Hill Cumorah Pageant.
The play is about the complex era of post manifesto polygamy in Utah.! It’s a wonderful play with humor and wit, yet deals intelligently with the serious dynamics of a family in 1903 still living "The Principle" in a changing church.
The play was originally performed on Sunday, March 17, 2024

Was Mormonism an Accident? How the Missing 116 Pages Changed Everything

Was Mormonism an Accident? How the Missing 116 Pages Changed Everything

On this episode of Mormonish Podcast, Rebecca and Landon are joined again by our good friend Ganesh Cherian to discuss the orgin of Mormonism and the LDS church.
Using clues and markers from the replacement text for the missing 116 pages, Ganesh provides some really intriguing information regarding
the actual timeline of Book of Mormon composition and the formation of the early Church of Christ, later known as The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
The clues to the actual origin of the LDS church that are held within the replacement text, paint a very different picture of the early organization of the church. Including who God chose to lead the church!
We learned so much from our discussion with Ganesh and we know you will too!

Let's Not Be Rash About Wearing Garments

Let's Not Be Rash About Wearing Garments

On this impromptu episode of Mormonish Podcast, we are joined by the wonderful Lila Tueller, daughter of General Authority Hartman Rector Jr. to discuss a faithful social media thread about medical complication when wearing garments.
The opinoins of faithful Latter Day Saint women are very telling in the broader conversation about garment wearing that is happening today. And especially in light of the recent General Conference talk about the importance of the garment of the holy priesthood and change to the temple recommend questions instructing  members to always wear their garments day and night.

LGBTQ Students at BYU Share Their Heartbreaking Reality in New Documentary

LGBTQ Students at BYU Share Their Heartbreaking Reality in New Documentary

On this episode of Mormonish Podcast, Rebecca and Landon are joined by the creative team behind an amazing new documentary about BYU and the treatment of the LGBTQ community in recent years and the past.
The documentary, "A Long Way From Heaven" is the creation of David Sant (Director), Tyler Pace (Producer), and Jessie Gibbons (Director of Photography) and is an absolutely beautiful and heart wrenching depiction of LGBTQ students struggling to find a place at Brigham Young University amidst all the mixed messages the church and administration conveys.
This labor of love premiered in Lehi, UT on Friday March 15th to a packed house. We were so thrilled to see that a few clips of Mormonish Podcast even made it into the documentary.
We know you'll love this conversation with these amazing people!
