$1000 Resume Challenge with the Compound Effect

What is the Compound Effect? First of all, it’s an amazing book written by Darren Hardy. He goes through the process of how anyone can be successful by pushing themselves everyday. The Compound Effect is when you reap enormous benefits from small activities over time. This means that if you can complete just one more task towards your goal every day, you will start to see great results! If you continue doing the same thing, it is less likely you will be as successful. Remaining stagnant, you might as well be taking steps backward. The best way to do this is to create a power list. Create goals for your day that will move you one step forward. Ask yourself how you win each day and do it! it could be as simple as make 10 sales calls a day, read 10 pages a day, or apply to 10 jobs a day. The $1000 Resume Challenge Speaking of jobs… in this episode, we have posed a new challenge for our listeners. We have guaranteed a job to anyone who applies to 1000 jobs. Wow! Sounds like a lot doesn’t it. It’s not! All you have to do is apply for 11 jobs per day, for 90 days. This could be sending a resume to an employer directly, applying on LinkedIn, or any other application platform. The catch: apply for jobs you qualify! Take screenshots of the application receipts and keep a folder of them. If you can prove that you applied for 11 jobs a day for 90 days and STILL didn’t get a job, Dan will give the first person $1000.

    Career FAQs

Should I have a cover letter? If it’s not required, you don’t need it! If you have a templated cover letter that you send to everyone, don’t mess with it. “When I got a cover letter sent to me at Nestle Purina, I never looked at it.” - Matt The cover letter usually doesn’t provide the information a recruiter needs to move you along in the hiring process. "The email you send with your resume could be a brief form of the cover letter.” - Dan Should I include extracurricular & volunteer experience on my resume? YES! It’s good to add those industry specific activities, especially as a recent graduate. Some people also like to hire athletes. Showing leadership roles you have been a part of shows initiative, drive, and many other skills a company might be looking for. Can I ask questions in an interview? What kind of questions can I ask? Don’t ask “Where do you see yourself in 5 years?” Don’t immediately ask about PTO and benefits. Show interest in the company and position: “What is the top thing that would set me up for success in this role?” “What are the next steps in the hiring process?” Should I connect with the HR representative on LinkedIn before your interview? Do it! You have nothing to lose to connect with those people. It can only help. Plus, it shows initiative. Can I take notes in an interview? Absolutely! It helps give you time to think about the questions being asked. This is a good way to draft a follow-up thank you letter. You should always send your follow-up in at least 24 hours! How can I stand out in the hiring process? Do everything to the best of your ability! Listen to our separate episodes on Interview Prep, LinkedIn, and Resume Writing. If you follow each of these, you will be sure to land the job in any industry! We want to thank Mark and Tano for our new podcast music from Nights Like These
